3 A Note from our school nurse Immunizations & exam required by NC Imun. Laws--must be completed & submitted to school before the 30-day grace period which begins on the child's first day at school Medical conditions require an "emergency plan created with the school nurse No medication can be administered at school without a written order from the child's doctor. This includes over- the-counter medications, lotions, creams, etc. Medication authorization forms are available in the school office. Please do not send your child to school when he/she is sick or temperature is 100 or greater. In the case of a fever-- they must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin. Nurse Howell serves Snow Creek and Webb A. Murray. She is at Snow Creek every Monday, Wednesday and Friday when available.

5 Attendance Kindergartners are expected to come to school each day unless ill. If your child gets sick at school we will contact you. When your child returns to school after an illness a note must be sent explaining the absence. Before any medication can be dispensed to your child at school, a form must be completed by your doctor and submitted to the office. Our office personnel will administer all medications. If your work, cell, or home phone number or changes, please notify us immediately.

6 Tardy? Children are tardy if they arrive after 7:30. We begin our morning routine promptly at this time. It is very important that every child be present for this learning period. IF YOUR CHILD IS TARDY he/she must be brought in the office to get a tardy slip.

New Safety Procedures Our school building will remain locked during the school day to ensure safety of all students and staff. Visitors entering the school will now press a bell located at the front entrance of the building and show a photo ID to enter the school. Everyone must sign in at the office and wear a yellow name badge. 7

Buses Bus drivers are mostly TAs in the building Bus riders will never be tardy Student may go to breakfast off the bus Riding the bus is a privilege 3 cameras on every bus Be at your bus stop 5 min prior to pick up Parents need to be at bus stop in the AM & PM. Kinders will not be let off the bus without a parent. 8

9 How will your child go home? At the beginning of the year, you will indicate how your child will go home. If there are any changes, you must notify us in writing. Occasionally, school will be canceled or will be dismissed early due to bad weather. If this should happen, we will use the going home information you have provided. It is imperative that you let your childs teacher know if your childs schedule changes. Make SURE someone is at the bus stop to greet your child in the afternoons. The bus driver will not let kindergartners off if no one is there!

10 Leaving School Early If your child is to leave school early please send us a note in your childs folder. We will try to have everything ready for him/her to take at that time. You must sign your child out at the office. Your child will wait in the classroom, and the office will call for your child to meet you at the office area.

11 Daily Snacks Healthy snack Teacher may ask you to place your childs snack and lunch (if applicable) in separate labeled bags. This makes it easier for your child to know what is snack and what is lunch.

12 Lunch School lunches are provided each day at a minimal cost. We will let you know the cost in the summer. Our computer system allows for lunches to be paid for daily, weekly, or monthly. You may want to use the convenience of paying on your childs lunch account online. Go to https://www.lunchprepay.com/Redirection.aspx Students will scan their name tag to pay for lunch. Please send lunch money or milk money in an envelope with your childs name, teachers name, and lunch number on it. We will send it to the cafeteria on the day it is sent.

15 Media Center At least once a week Your childs library number is the same as their lunch number. Check out two books each visit New books can be checked out after borrowed books are returned. If a book is lost, let us know so arrangements can be made for payment.

16 Computer Lab At least once a week Lab times and frequency are at discretion of the teacher. Students will also have access to classroom computers, laptops and iPads

17 Rest Time A time is usually set aside each day (especially at the beginning of the year) for rest and relaxation. It is usually 10-15 minutes and takes place after lunch. Some children require more, some less. This is to be a quiet time. Some children fall asleep and need it.

18 Helpful Information SUPPLIES You should receive a supply list from your childs designated teacher prior to school beginning. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS The rules are posted for all children to see in each individual room. They will be explained on the first day of school. TEACHER-PARENT COMMUNICATION Home/school folders will be sent home every day. Included in these folders will be work done in class and important communications from you to the school and from us to you. This will provide you the opportunity to see the work and have your child tell you about their day. It will let you know how your child has done behaviorally all week long, if your childs teacher sends behavior reports. Remove all papers daily and return the folder the next day.

19 Extra Clothing In the event that an accident should occur, please send an extra set of clothes for your child. They will be kept in their cubby. As the seasons change you may want to consider changing the clothing to warmer clothing or cooler clothing.

29 Birthdays We do honor birthdays in ways other than parties. If you would like to celebrate your childs birthday, our cafeteria offers treats that you can pre-order at a minimal cost. Please send no party invitations unless you provide one for all the students in the class.

30 General Information Please send your child to school in clothes for learning and play. Send all messages to school by note and put in their school folder. Children at this age sometimes forget or get mixed up if it is a verbal message. Notify us of any problem your child is having at school or home in case we are not aware of it. Children sometimes forget jackets & lunch boxes at school at school or on the bus. Please have an alternate plan if this happens. Have an early bed time. Your child will be tired for the first few weeks. GET INVOLVED Volunteer to help in the classroom, come to PTO (Parent/Teacher organization) functions, & most importantly, talk with your child about school.

32 First Day of School Aug. 24, 25 or 26 Staggered Entry After your child is assigned a Kindergarten class this summer, you will receive a letter advising of teacher and a designated day for his/her first day of school within a three day period. Letters will be mailed approx. 2 weeks before school starts. Following staggered entry, all kindergarteners will attend on August 27 th.

35 Words of Encouragement April 23, 2015 Dear Parents, Your greatest task and ours will be to provide encouragement and praise to your child. Allow your child to become independent at home as independence is learned at school. Read to your child as often as you can, every night if possible. Research has shown that reading aloud to children has a greater positive effect on literacy development in your children than any other activity. At times you may not see many papers coming home with your child other than regular newsletters, artwork and dictation/ writing activities. It is therefore very important that you talk often with your child about what is going on in school and contact us if you have any concerns. Our job will be to provide a safe, positive and caring environment. We will see that your child has the best learning activities that have been proven by research and experience. All subject areas will be integrated throughout the day in such a way that a firm conceptual foundation will be developed. We teach in large and small groups, individually, as well as independent and center activities. We firmly believe that all children should be able to be productive, attain self-control, and have a positive self-concept in their classroom.
