Well! That Caused a Flurry of Opinions!About 50% on people thought it was a wild mustard and the other 50%thought it was oil seed rape. All seemed concerned about the seeminglyrampant spread of the plant throughout Cornwall. So … I contacedCornwall Wildlife Trust. Laura Fox replied:

If you have noticed the abundant yellow flowers popping up along many ofour local roads recently, you may be wondering what theyare and how they got there. Looking a lot like oilseedrape, the tall (up to 2m) plants bear large rough leaves andflowers which, if you look closely, bear four yellow petalsarranged in a cross shape.

This type of flower is characteristic of the crucifer family(Brassicaceae), and there are many species of yellow crucifer in theCornish flora. But one species in particular has been doing very well inrecent years: Black Mustard. It is named for its blackish seeds which canbe used to make mustard, and once were, before mustard cultivars weredeveloped that were easier to harvest. This is a favoured food-plant ofsome butterflies such as the Large White, whose caterpillars are brightlypatterned to warn predators of the mustard toxins they build up in theirbodies.

Some people are concerned about the spread of Black Mustard, which isunderstandable – each year it appears to grow more prominently on ourroadsides. However, we have no reason to believe that it is out-competingother species. This is a plant of disturbed waste-ground, so takesadvantage of open areas where other plants struggle to grow. It is a P.T.O.

Remember This from Last Month? Can Anyone Identify This Plant?

What IS this plant that suddenly seems to be a so many of ourhedgerows this year. With yellow flowers it is widespread. It’squite pretty but I’d hate to see taking over as the dreaded JapaneseKnotweed has done. It is SO suddenly widespread that it could well be a cause forconcern.

If you know what it is please contact What’s On in Chacewater [email protected] or phone 01872 399560

native wildflower which is becoming more successful, perhaps due to ourchanging climate, or perhaps because people are no longer collecting itsseeds. No doubt the rush of passing cars is also aiding the spread of itsseeds. While many species of wildlife are in decline, this one is bucking thetrend. Let us enjoy its display of yellow flowers bringing an extra splash ofcolour to our roadsides.

CHACEWATER RIGHTS OF WAY (CROW) WALKSUNDAY 7th JULY 2019Slightly overcast yet warm and dry underfoot, the conditions wereabsolutely ideal for the 16 enthusiast trekkers and 5 dogs to enjoy walkingthe surrounding Chacewater countryside on Sunday the 7th July. Thetheme for the day was simply to see what changes had occurred in andaround our country “estate”, its lanes, structures, fauna and flora today andthere was much to see

So, following our statutory introductions (two new members in Chris,Sonya and Jip!)) we set off from the car park up Church Hill (noting someof the new roadside and since relocated road sign on at corner to FalmouthRoad) and towards St Paul’s Church. Walking at the pace of slowestmember, we paused at our church to take in the surrounding scenery, talk abit about the cemetery and other points of interest. All okay, we thenheaded on up the hill and turned off left at St Michaels along SilverBridleways 301/12/1 and 30137/1, which - eventually - saw us gather oncemore out on the Creegbrawse road near Wheal Henry Farm. I sayeventually because, for some inexplicable reason, some of the partybecame detached and took an alternative route! No matter, all safe andsound and so we merged once again for the photograph below at WhealHenry.

Near Wheal Henry Farm with the horizon over the Poldice Valleyas a backdrop

Picture taken, we then headed right towards what we refer to as theCreegbrawse Crossing but not before observing the size and scale of thenew agricultural building being constructed along the horizon here.Darting across the crossing, we were immediately taken by the superbworks that had been undertaken by Cormac who had recently resurfacedroad that eventually brought us out and opposite Truro Tractors. With ourwits about us (because the speed of traffic moving along Cox Hill to andfrom United Mines on a Sunday is quite something!) we transited throughthe yard at Truro Tractors before cutting down left along Silver Byway301/54/1, behind the Chacewater Park Caravan site towards Salem. Ofnote, the bottom of this Byway is now being badly eroded by the sheerweight and volume of traffic that now use it compared to just a year ago!

After a short pause for a chat, we took the left Silver Byway (301/55/2) uptowards the road that takes you either left towards Unity and right to WhealBusy – we chose the latter. Passing the Killifreth Stamps Engine Housealong the way, we were all in awe of the work being done to bring thisbuilding sympathetically back to life as a domestic dwelling. Off again, and over the busy road crossing towards the Wheal Busy area, the firstthing we noted here was one of a number of Tregothnan Estate treeplantations to the right which is now really showing itself. This gave us theopportunity to acknowledge some of the good works being undertaken bythe Estate in our area. No sooner had we talked about this, we then notedthe immediate change that had taken place in and around the Old Smithy.Yes, some fly-tipping remains but the car business has seemingly gone, leaving one to assume that this is all to do with the works that will soon betaking place to stabilise and hopefully improve this fine building as part ofthe Highways England Designated Funding scheme, for more appropriateuse in future.

Moving on, we headed back down into the village along a series of GoldBridleways, Footpaths and Byways, keeping Primrose Farm to the rightand Hillside Farm to the left but not without first noting the resurfacingwork undertaken to improve the pathway surface.

Passing 4 very respectful off-road bikers along the way (each switchedtheir engine off and said good morning) we eventually emerged out alongthe Terrace at about 1120. Although a bit longer than was planned for thiswalk, in terms of time, everyone seemed to enjoy the variety of issues

talked about a seen throughout this particular walk ……and the sun wasjust coming out ahead of what was to become a lovely Sunday afternoon.

As has been the tradition since starting the CRoW in early 2016, we take abreak in August. The next walk will leave the Square Car Park at 9.30amon Sunday 8th September 2019 - join the fun and chat.

With a tractor cropping I the background near Anzac and lovely horses in theforeground, I doubt the view from Hillside Farm has been more beautiful.

FRIENDS OF THE ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITAL

This is the tenth report as Chairman that I was able to present a report at ourrecent AGM, and it continues to be a tremendous honour to hold this role andI am delighted to be able to report that again we have had a wonderful yeardespite some local difficulties, especially when a dishwasher does not work!!When we are trying to give over 76,000 complimentary drinks in our cancerclinics. We have welcomed many new volunteers and sadly had to saygoodbye to some who, for various reasons, have decided not to continue –we thank them all for their service to our group of Friends and to the RoyalCornwall Hospital.Volunteers have been involved in talking to patients about their experiencesat RCH and in giving valuable feedback towards how the little things canmake a difference, as well as increasing responses to “Friends and Families”forms. Seating for parents in the Children’s Unit was not suitable for longperiods of time or when breast feeding, so we were able to provide muchmore comfortable chairs for the unit.The mealtime companion role has been launched again on Tintagel Ward,often volunteers combining this role with another shift. It is so important forpatients to have nutritious food and to be encouraged to eat. It is hoped in2019 to extend this to other wards after suitable training has been given tovolunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering would be welcome, pleasecontact 01872 253737 speaking to a member of the Voluntary Service team.We continue to work closely with Truro College and many of the youngpeople who enhance the volunteering that we can support at the hospital.They look very smart and are proud to wear the logo tee-shirts that we providefor them and they are proving to be a real asset showing maturity andresponsibility in a variety of areas.Generosity of the public never ceases to amaze us and the gifts we have hadduring the year. Collecting tins around the hospital have amassed £27,284.64;we have received donations of £13,770.46 and our volunteers have fundraisedto the tune of £13,016.45. Our main source of revenue continues to be fromour Coffee Bar in Tower block.We thank everyone involved in any way in generating income for us and wewere able to promise grants of £198,660.49 in 2018.Some items that we have been able to purchase are:Virtual Skylight and ambient lighting for the MRI Scanner room;

A Message From Revd. Karen Hunter-JonesI am discovering that “The Land of Cornish”, as one of my friends’grandchildren have christened it is, a place of contradictions. It’s beautifulbeyond belief at times and at other times incredibly stark with its wildweather, isolation and deep stillness. As a recently arrived Emit, myobservation is that the Cornish are a contented and a hospitable people, asthey host so many from across the Tamar who’ve come seeking the beautyof nature, peace, tranquility and a more human pace of life.

A year on, I have been reflecting on what drew me here. It was a picture ofthe magnificent North Cornish coastline with a Celtic cross in theforeground. It captured me, being of Celtic origins myself, and convincedme that this was where I must be … and so I began the process of applyingfor jobs here. Did God lead me here? Who am I to say for certain, but Ihope so. Only time will tell. There have been people who have been kind, warm, funny and open to me. You know who you are and I thank you.And there have been people who have thanked me for whatever theybelieve they have received from me in return. You could say there’s been agood exchange rate going on.

It’s hard to welcome a stranger in, to make room for them in your alreadyorganized, busy lives. I’m sure Our Lord had this in mind when he told theparable of the sheep and the goats. The sheep (a metaphor for God’schildren) were praised for, among other things, welcoming a stranger inbecause, He says, ‘in as much as you did it to the least of these, you did itto me’.

As I write I’m reminded of William Holman Hunt’s painting, “The Light ofthe World”, which hangs in Keble College Oxford. Our Lord is depictedstanding in pre-dawn darkness, knocking on a door overgrown with weeds, with no door handle visible on the outside. He holds a lantern, but a gentleglow seems to emanate from Him also. Hunt felt compelled to paint it,based on the scripture, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any manhear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup withhim, and he with Me".

Our Lord used this simple metaphor to describe what being friends withGod can be like. It is like sitting down and sharing a meal together.

It’s a social interaction between two intellects and personalities as they getto know one another. Conversation and sustenance are shared, it’s a givingand taking, and it begins with the door being opened from the inside to thestranger on the outside. I can only imagine that perhaps the elation I havefelt when I have been invited to dinner in some of your homes is a littletaste of how He must feel when one soul opens their door and welcomesHim in.

I would never presume to be best friends with everyone I’ve had dinnerwith, but it’s a beginning, an exploration and adventure of possiblefriendship. We invite each other around to see what might grow betweenus in a conducive environment. Likewise opening oneself to the possibilityof relating to the Great Unknown is just the beginning, not a fait accompli, but a process of mutual discovery and possible affection. So, if youhaven’t, why not open the door, you never know, you might really get on.

Most obviously, we have a Bowling Club thatoffers opportunity for all age groupings to take up the game, a FootballClub that is looking to expand and Chacewater Players gives enjoyment tothose aspiring thespians. Both our Play and Skateboarding parks areextensively used and the western end of the Recreation Ground hasrecently been transformed into a space where it is hoped that people canrelax and take in the surrounding countryside. We have an exceptionallypopular Village Hall that offers a wide range of activities (again for allages) and the Millennium Green is a beautiful place where people canpicnic, view pond life or simply read a book and again take time reflect. Our surrounding landscape provides a fascinating mix of green open space, heritage and agriculture which can be visited via a myriad of PublicFootpaths, Bridleways and Byways – 17.5 miles of them in fact!

New projects are cropping up all the time and all over the place; the recentrefurbishment of the Twelveheads Play Park and an ambitious project toreenergise the Cornwall Observatory (up on Wheal Busy) to the massesperhaps being the latest and most obvious. We have a fabulous annualBonfire Night and our Christmas Lights are a delight. Vintage car ralliesand the annual Art, Craft and Horticultural Fairs provide a terrific insightinto the skills and feeling for a rural life that is the envy of many across theregion.

All of the above were highlighted through the work undertaken as part ofthe Chacewater Parish Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), whichgoes to Referendum sometime in late Autumn and for which we hope youwill give it your absolute vote of support on the day.

What the NDP process also identified was that many of our teenagedyoungsters had become a bit frustrated at not having a space or placein the community to safely “hang out” with people of similar age.Furthermore, members of your community have attended recentbriefings which underline the clear benefits that good social interactionat this vital age can bring. So, with this in mind and because we wantto do more to help, the Parish Council has engaged with VolunteerCornwall and will be receiving a brief from a Youth

Local Government News.Dear Reader

Representing a large rural area brings opportunities, as one might say, fromfar and wide and you cannot really be sure or surprised where the nextrequest is coming from. Today, as I write this article, I was asked if onecould get the corner on the Crossroads at Quenchwell cut because thevisibility there was badly impaired. At this pre-season of hedge cutting,Cornwall Council I asked their Contractors to cut (trim) small areas ofhedge particularly sharp corners in the interest of road safety and ampleased that this has now been done. To safeguard nesting birds nobodyshould be cutting hedges until 1st September but in the interest of safety onour roads, small areas are prepared for safe travelling.

The second call was from a resident concerned about the vehicles parkedon Kerley Hill, some motorists are parking too close to the junction, particularly the junction with Kerley Vale houses and making the situationdangerous as at that point the junction becomes “blind”. I have discussedthis with Cornwall Highways and they are looking into the issue.

Some good news, Cornwall Council Highways have now re-painted thedisabled parking bay off Station Road which we hope will be of great helpto the gentleman who lives in one of the Riverside houses. CornwallHighways are also trying to see what improvements can be done atTodpool where there is conflict between the Devoran to Portreath Cycletrail and the road to Todpool. Fortunately, traffic levels are low there, sountil the difficulties are improved all I can do is to ask that all users of thatarea take extra care on the road.

IN MEMORIAM

Pte. Howard Stanley COLLIVER. Canadian Expeditionary Force, 27th Btn.Died 26 August 1918

Howard Stanley Colliver was the eldest child of Flora Colliver (née Bailey) andher husband Richard Charles. He left Wheal Prosper Farm, the family home inChacewater, in 1910 and sailed to North America. There he settled on the remoteKeweenaw Peninsula in Atlantic Mine, a small community on the shore of LakeSuperior, in Houghton County, Michigan, U.S.A.

Shortly after the start of the “Great War”, Howard Stanley left his new wife athome and travelled to the city of Winnipeg in Canada – where he joined theCanadian Infantry, 27th Battalion, with service number 2378394. This unit waspart of the 6th Canadian Brigade, which combined with others to form the 2ndCanadian Division that sailed for England in May 1915.

Howard and the 2nd Canadian Division completed further training and crossedto France on 15-18 September 1915. Outside Ypres in April and June theyendured weeks of intensive artillery bombardments with night attacks and vicioushand-to-hand fighting in the trenches around Hill 60 / Mount Sorrel.

Pte. Colliver’s younger brother, William John, was killed in action near the townof Albert in August 1916. One month later, Howard Stanley moved south intothe same area and the Canadians joined the Somme offensive, engaging in battlesat Flers-Courcelette, Thiepval, and Le Transloy.

Committed to the Arras offensive throughout 1917, Howard Stanley was fightingfrom April to August at Vimy, on the Scarpe, at Lens and Hill70. They returnedto Flanders in October/November and were drawn into the second battle ofPasschendaele. After the 3rd battle of Ypres, Pte. Colliver’s unit moved back tothe town of Arras and was in action there in March 1918. In August they wereagain in action in part of the 2nd battles of Arras.

IN MEMORIAMSome 30 men of Chacewater lost their lives while serving in the armed forces during the FirstWorld War.. Their graves lie in Africa, in Asia and across Europe. Many joined up locally or

elsewhere in England. Others came back from Australia, from South Africa or North America.Ongoing research uncovers a bit more of the story behind the names of the fallen as recordedon Chacewater War Memorial. While commemorating their individual sacrifice this may makea small contribution also towards documenting part of our community’s history. Paul Shevlin

On 26th August 1918 Pte. H.S. Colliver was killed in action; the official accountstates that “while advancing with his Platoon over open ground he was instantlykilled by a machine gun bullet.” He is buried in Wancourt British Cemetery,Pas-de-Calais.

IN MEMORIAM

Gnr. William John COLLIVER, Royal Garrison Artillery, 48th SiegeBattery. Died 03 August 1916

18 year-old William John Colliver enlisted (No. 1054) with the Devon RoyalGarrison Artillery (RGA) Territorial Force early in September 1914. Tenmonths later, this unit became the core of the 48th Siege Battery, RGA,equipped with 4 large calibre, 9.2inch, heavy howitzer guns. In January 1916,they went to Egypt to help guard the Suez Canal; but after a few weeks theBattery re-loaded their heavy gear and shipped to France.

By the end of May, the big guns were dug into position near the northern townof Albert by Gunner Colliver and his mates. Here, they worked non-stop firinghigh explosive shells at German Army positions. After Mametz was capturedby British forces in early July, the Battery moved forward and dug in again.

As the great battle of the Somme wore on, William John Colliver was killedon 3rd August 1916 when his dugout was hit by a German artillery shell. Hewas buried in Bottom Wood cemetery, Fricourt, with 14 more soldiers killednearby during the next two months. These graves were destroyed by later battlesand Gunner W.J. Colliver now lies in the Dantzig Alley British Cemetery inMametz.

Born 1896, William John Colliver grew up on Wheal Prosper Farm where hismother, Flora (Bailey) Colliver, raised a family of 2 boys and 2 girls. Williamwas the youngest, his big brother Howard was 4 years older and sisters Helenand Flora Gertrude in between. A new baby brother, Thomas Garfield, wasborn in the summer of 1902 when William was 6 years old. That autumn, fatherRichard Charles left by ship for South Africa to go mining. He returned in 1904in time for Thomas’ 2nd birthday.

Flora bore another two boys: Richard Courtenay in 1907 and Alfred Bennett in1910. In the same year, Flora’s husband Richard went back to South Africaand her eldest son, Howard Stanley, emigrated to North America.Foreshadowing more heartache, little Alfred died in 1914 aged 4 years.

VILLAGE PONDWATCHJULY 2019

Small beetles roam ceaselessly across the shrinking surface of the pond. Thewater level has dropped by 20cm. and small mattresses of blanket weed billowat the west end. [We will watch out for their threat to spread wider]. It is asurprise to see a handful of tadpoles remain grazing at the receding shoreline.A newt sneaks up and grabs one.

Tall grasses and pendulous sedges sway in the breeze. Brambles have set aheavy crop of blackberries and fresh green branches reach out to claim newterritory. Sparrows forage among the reeds and under leaves. Some hoverabove the lily pads and pluck insects from the surface as they emerge. Oneshuffles sideways down a stem of bulrush and dips to drink. Blackbirds splashnoisily and bathe in the water.

An Emperor dragonfly shows its brilliant blue body as it patrolsthe sunlit length of pond. Later, a female Emperor spends 20minutes laying her eggs. Several sparrows target her, but herspeed and agility in the air lets her evade repeated attacks. Afew azure and blue-tailed damselflies also drift among theplants at the water’s edge.

In the afternoon, an adult grass snake moves slowly along the eastern shore. It turns the corner and swims swiftly through weeds to gain shelter beneaththe brambles. A juvenile grass snake, 60cm long and slender as a finger, creates a disturbance when it comes to the surface by floating weeds. It snakesspeedily to the far side of the pond and slides out of sight into the marginalweed bank. Another juvenile, about 45cm. also appears at the bankside andswims into the weeds at the west end.

Fringed yellow lily pads cover much of the surface. The regular passage ofgrass snakes is marked by channels of open water through them, like thetracks of an icebreaker passing through pack-ice at sea. Overhead, largebumble bees visit the bright yellow lily flowers.
