On Wednesday we hiked Mt. Diablo. We saw but didn’t hike near the burned area - no one wants to hike in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, referred to in novels as Badlands, Outlands,Scorched Earth. Last time there was a big Fire on the Mountain was in ’77 which inspired the Grateful Dead song of the same name. There are plants that require fire to propagateand there are others that typically appear after a fire. Plant Maestro, Gregg Weber, compiled a list of what to expect come spring. As a bonus, links are imbedded in the pix which willtake you to calflora.org; clicking on the image there will take you to more info, clicking on those images will take you to many more pix at UC Berkeley.

I haven’t seen most of these but we do have the mallow in our native plant garden, it’s about 9 ft tall!
Read any good books lately... I just finished The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. The main reason I mention it, besides the fact that it’s a good book, is that the maincharacter is a strong woman botanist/bryologist during the 1800s. You can read a review by Barbara Kingsolver from NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/29/books/review/elizabeth-gilberts-signature-of-all-things.html There are over 150 holds at the library so reading it by year’s end looks dicey. If you have an eReader like and iPad or Kindle, contactme, I have a copy to share.
Last time we saw the goldfish at Burma Springs, Eric said he liked the black ones (shadows on the bottom, clever). It’s an almost magical sight. When we got to Moses Rock Spring wediscovered there was a black goldfish and, believe-it-or-not, his name was Eric. Now that’s magical...
