REDWOOD LEISURE CUP Round 2

TAYPORT v DUNDONALD BLUEBELL

Dundonald Bluebell pay only their second visit to Tayport, their inaugural visit being in 1998 when they were on the wrong end of a 7-0 scoreline in this same competition. The Canniepairt faithful would love to see a repeat of that scoreline this afternoon, but the truth is, that's unlikely to be the case. Bluebells ma y not be challenging for promotion from the Fife League, but they have demonstrated they are not a side to be trifled with, having performed creditably away from home on several occasions already this season, including wins at Newburgh and Rosyth. For testimony to Dundonald's potential, one need look no further than the first round of this very competition when Bluebell eliminated Elmwood at Craigie Park - and we all know what happened to Tayport earlier this season at that very venue. Dundonald can include Steve Kirk, an applicant when Tayport had a managerial vacancy earlier this season, amongst their managers this season. Kirk has moved on and, after an unsettled period , things have settled down at Moorfield Park. Bluebell's squad this afternoon includes five players aged 18 or under but is unlikely to include the influential David Balfour. The ex-Glenrothes Strollers defender has been out injured for a couple of weeks. Another injury doubt is young goalkeeper Paul Grealis who was reinstated from Dunfermline Athletic. Main goal threat will be provided by top scorer Duncan Campbell who was signed from crack Fife amateur club Norton House. Weather permitting, Tayport have three players on international duty tomorrow and it remains to be seen whether John Ward, Scott Peters and Roberto Morris play all or only part of this afternoon's game. Roberto Morris took a knock last week but there were no significant injuries to report. However, there could be a shuffling of the pack to give everybody some match action. John Knox has missed out on the Scottish Cup action through being cup tied with Glenrothes but could be in contention for a place today Other considerations for the Tayport management team are the shift patterns of Derek Wemyss and Brian Livie, both of whom have their availabilities restricted by work commitments from time to time. There will be no extra time this afternoon. If the game is still level after 90 minutes, then it's straight on to penalties.

A warm welcome to the players and officials of Dundonald Bluebell and a good afternoon to the Tayport support Well. we certainly made no mistake in dispatching Bellshill last week in our Scottish Cup replay.

The standard of our play was very pleasing. The determination and attitude shown by the entire team was exceptional.

The standard of football played was of the kind the management and the Canniepairt support have seen from some of the great Scottish Cup ties of the past and, if that's any indication, we are in for a long run in this competition.

Especially pleasing for me is the level of fitness of our players. In the last twenty minutes in games, teams are finding it hard to cope with the pace of our play.

This is largely down to the training methods applied by our coaching staff, Tosher, Jimmy and Ron, and all three should be commended for the level of fitness of our players. Not forgetting the players themselves and their willingness to work hard on a training night. It is very pleasing and we are reaping the benefit.

Turning our sights to the opposition today, I need not remind you of the outcome the last time the two teams met in the same competition. This is why I constantly remind the players about becoming complacent. We must continue to apply the same effort as we have in our previous games. It would be all too easy to take Dundonald lightly and undo all our previous good work.

If you take into account our two ties in the Scottish, this week's game, next week's game in the North End Centenary Cup, then the second round tie in the Scottish the week after that, it will have been seven weeks from our last league game to our next.

While it is great to be involved in cup competitions, especially Inter Region Cups where the different opposition adds a bit of intrigue to the games, I am sure you will agree that our first priority must be the League and I personally would have liked to have had a couple of league games in between our cup games.

But, of course, I should not complain. To be involved in all competitions at this stage of the season is a great credit to all associated with the club and long may it continue!

OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP

We did pretty well with the predictions for quarter ·• final places in the OVD Cup preview which ap- ~ -peared in the last edition of the programme. We said Tayport v Glenafton would be a finely balanced tie, pointing out that Gtenafton had yet

to concede a goal in the competition and that's still the situation today, but, as we know , the New Cumnock side are out . Out of the cup without conceding a goal in five rounds and six matches in this season's competition. It could hardly have been more finely balanced with the tie settled by the slimmest of margins , 5-4 on penalties after two 0-0 draws. Pollok were correctly tipped to knock out Hill of Beath and we predicted that Maryhill would carry the day after a replay against Bathgate. Linlithgow v Renfrew was listed as a possib le shock and so it transpired . The shock was that Rose lost a two goal lead in the replay to go down by 4-2. By their own admission , Renfrew played second fiddle for much of the game , and were a trifle fortunate to go through . Rose manager Jim Sinnett, hadn't endeared himself to the Renfrew faithful with his pre-match comments in the press and, consequently , the Renfrew faithful derived much satisfaction from Frew's surprise win. Put your money on Lugar for a place in the quaiter finals , we said, and that's how it turned out with a penalty shoot-out win over Dunbar United. Petershill may well be disappointed, we said, and they duly were, losing 2-0 at Troon . Arthurlie were runaway 6 goal winners against Thorniewood but Lochee United made it very difficult for themse lves before accounting for Neilston. An injury time equaliser saw United grab a lifeline in a 3-3 draw at Thomson Park after being two goals behind - and it cou ld have been a lot more - in the first game . Three ahead and even the luxury of a missed penalty in the replay seemed to have the Dundee side cruising into the quarters, but a two goal rally from Neilston made it an uncomfortable half for the visitors, who just held on. The quarter-finals are due two weeks today when the pick of the ties will be at Thomson Park between Lochee and Arthurlie. Pollok meet Renfrew for the fifth time this season and Troon are also at home to a fellow West Super Premier League side in Maryhi ll. Lugar Boswell Thistle and Tayport meet each other for the first time. Statistics show that Tayport are appearing in the last eight for the tenth time in fifteen years. Arthurlie with 9 appearances , are next, then come Auchinleck (8), Glenafton and Kilwinning (7) , Pollok(6) , Maryhill and Hill of Beath , both with 4 appearances at this stage.

IN WITD THE BR/flfl At last the brick wall is takin g sha pe ! The wall of bric ks engraved with the names of supporters, players, committee, sponsors of Tayport FC through the years is now under construction and we're looking for names for another ord er of bricks. More detai ls fro m secretary.

Bdia 111tte,S It's been a superb week for media coverage ofTayport FC. The Sun (14/2/05) kicked off the week with two page coverage of the 5th round ties. Tayport v Glenafton took major billing with a lengthy post-match interview with Grant Paterson which concentrated on laying the bogy that was Glenafton, in the replay . Two action photos from the Canniepairt tie illustrated the page . The Fife Herald (18/2/05) exce lled with the entire back page taken up with match report , preview and a superb action colour photo in which Roberto Morris was prominent. Significantly, in that he would tuck away the decisive penalty in the replay next day, Roberto was also featured in the other two photos which appeared on the inside pages. The Sunday Mail (20/2/05) maintained the trend with a 350 word report and colour photo of Roberto's celebration at Glenafton. The Sunday Mail's coverage of the OVD ties was exce llent and overs hadowed comp letely the somewhat pathetic OVD coverage of its Scottish tabloid rival, the Sunday Post. On to Monday and the Daily Record (21 /2/05) covered the tie with a report and colour photo, although their headline writer lost points by describing 100+ game Roberto as a 'Port new boy' . The Sun's Scott Campbell covered the tie for a seco nd week and again gave it top billing. Scott chose to concentrate on Frazer Fitzpatrick's shoot-out winning save from Joe Carruth and included an interview with Frazer and the unfortunate Carruth. The Sun's photographer captured perfectly Roberto slotting home the winning kick. The Evening Telegraph (2 l/02 /05) was also on top form with a colour photograph in prime position, somewhat unusually, but nevertheless welcome, on the back page showin g Derek Wemyss , Grant Paterson and Brian Livie congrat ulating Roberto Morris. No shortage of exposure in local and national press for sponsors Scott & Fyfe. The Glasgow Evening Times (21/02/05), in reporting the OVD quarter final draw , dreamed of the possibility of a first all-Glasgow final in 20 years after Pollok and Maryhill were kept apart. The Edinburgh Evening News (2 1 /02/05) has increased its Junior coverage on a Monday to two full pages in its new sports pullout 'Final Whistle '. The new supplemen t had only sad news to report , however, with the three surviv ing clubs from the News area, Lin lithgow, Bathgate and Dunbar being eliminate d from the compe tition.

MARSH & SULl:.,IVA.N

.TAYPORT .

Good afternoon to both sets of supporters and welcome to the Canniepairt for this cup-tie between 'Port and Dundonald Bluebell from the East Region's Fife District League.

Today's encounter will be no easy one as we have found out already this season. Teams from a so-called lesser division can be formidable opponents, due to the fact that putting on a good show at a Super League team can be a big boost for team morale in the quest for honours in their own league. The thought of taking a 'big scalp' is always a motivation in matches between different regions and leagues. Myself and Stewart always found games against the Bluebell tough encounters when we were in charge at Glenrothes and expect a physical game today .

Last week's trip to Glenafton was a tight affair with goals always hard to come by, due to the fact that both sides had excellent defensive records going in to the game. The first game at Tayport had been a tense one, with both teams cancelling out each other. Although we had the better chances , I thought that a draw was a fair result

Down at Glenafton we decided to go for them at the start with three men up front and, although we did not score, we certainly were the better team and were a bit upset, to say the least, that Barry McNaughton ' s first minute goal was disallowed. We dominated for the next 35 minutes and created some good half

chances but Glenafton started to threaten our goa l in the last 110 minutes of the half and, as we went in at the break, we knew that they would come out all guns blazing for the second period .

We dealt with what they could throw at us for the next quarter of an hour , with Fitzy making a good stop from Steve Agnew as the tie hotted up. Then once again we started to take contro l with big Ralph, Sean Christie, Robbie Henderson and Scott Peters all having decent attempts to break the deadlock but it was not to be. So the game went to penaltie s and, with Frazer Fitzpatrick saving their second penalty and Ward, Dailly , Stewart and Gwmion all dispatching penaltie s beyond the Glens keeper, the stage was set for 'Ca ptain Marvel ', Roberto Morris to step up and send the Tayport players, coaches , committee and supporte rs wild with delight as he placed a great shot into the corner of the net to send us into the last eight of the Scottish Junior Cup. A great day to remember for all at Tayport .

We decided to reward the guys with a night out at the Ten Pin Bowling in lieu of training on Wednesday. It was a good night and adds to the great team spirit that exists at the club. Gunner won the ten pin bowling , Patty won the pool competition and also picked up the Champions League sweepie with Scooter picking up the award for wearing the most outrageou s shirt on the night

Enjoy the match, '1(,i.tli J3u1ta~~ Tayport v Dundonald - The previous meetings

It's one win a piece from the two previous meetings - both in the Tayside/Fife Cup, at Cardenden in 1996 and the Canniepairt two years later. The 3-2 win for Bluebell at Moorside Park was a real shocker. Tayport went into the tie two weeks after lifting their first Scottish Junior Cup, hot favourites to extend their unbeaten run away from home to an amazing 58 games, stretching back to 1993. Bluebell, against all the odds, snatched a 3-2 semi-final win. It was to be Tayport's only defeat on the road between December 93 and January 1997. Paterson, Ramsay, Stewart and Dave Reilly are still in 'Port colours nine years later.

Tayport avenged that def~at in the clubs' most recent meeting on the Canniepairt in· October 1998. A crowd of 205 saw Tayport win 7-0. Paterson, Ramsay, Stewart and Reilly also appeared that day. Also included in the home line-up was a young local lad, Mark Corcoran, now starring for Hamilton Accies.

Steven Balfour, who first signed for Dundonald from Bowhill In 1995, is Bluebell's sole survivor from the clubs' most recent meeting.

Whilst Tayport were busying themselves with reaching the last eight of the Scottish Cup, Bo'ness with two successive wins , were edging past them to take Port's second top spot in the Whyte & Mackay Super League. A hard fought and controversial 2-1 win at Thornton was followed up by a 1-0 success over Camelon. For the eighth time this season , Thornton took the lead only to end up losing the game and , following another single goal defeat , this time from Bonnyrigg , the Memorial Park club find themselves very much in the relegation mire . Realistically, Hibs will have to win four of their last six games to avoid a quick return to the Fife District League. That rescue attempt begins today with a six pointer against Arniston , for whom a defeat will surely be the death knell to their Super League status.

Wins today for Bonnyrigg (at Bo'ness) and Linlithgow (at Camelon) would see Tayport slip down to 5th spot. Carnoustie are getting their act together and if they can take something from Bathgate this afternoon , it will put pressure on Camelon and Oakley . Oakley have games in hand and the renowned battling spirit of Willie Newbigging's team , which pulled them through against Arniston last week , will be vital in the run in.

VllNMORE

Thr ee hours of football between T ayport and Glen afton failed to prnduc e any goals to discuss, but tha t mat ter s not. 'Port are into the quarte1·-fi11als of the OVD Scottish Junior Cup for the tenth time in th eir fifteen-year histo ry . The feat is all the more remarkable given that only Arthurlie, on nine such appe arances , and the once mighty Auchiuleck Talbot , on eight, can come dose to matchin g Tayport's record durin g that perio d.

Ther e wa s little to separate 'Port and the Glens , with defences earn ing man y of the plaudits. In the initial match, on the Cannie pairt , Scott Pete rs hit the post with a fine header , in the fo·st ha lf, wh ile, late in t he gam e, John W ard almost headed a dramatic winne1·, only for the ball to fly inches wid e.

A disallowed Barry McNaughton "goal" , in the first minut e, was the mai n incident of the ninety played at Loch Park, in that second enco un ter. The visitors were more intent on actua lly clinchi ng victory , with the Glens appearing content to settle for spot kicks .

Whe n they aJTived, there was finally an opport unity fo1· Tayp or t to move on from the cup fina l shoot-out woes of 23rd May, last yeai-. In addition, it was a chance to avenge, to some exte nt, anothe r Firhill defeat, again on 23rd May , back in 1993, when Glenafton snatched the Ho ly Grail.

Thi s time , the1·e could only be one outcome. John Wa 1·d, Steve n Stewart, Ga reth Dai lly, Ross Gunn ion and Roberto Morris all held thei r nerv e and Frazer Fitzpatrick made an early , yet decisive, contribution , sav ing from Joe Carruth, as Tay po rt edged th rnu gh, 5-4.

So, Lugar Boswell Thistle await . But, first things fir st , Dund ona ld Blueb ell, in the Redwood Leisure Cup.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH

THE SNOUT

Lugar Boswell Thistle, our OVD Scottish Junior Cup 6th round opponents in two weeks time, may be something of an unknown name in these parts, but they have appeared in the final of the competition. Indeed their appearance v Petershill in the 1955/56 final attracted an amazing attendance of 64,702, the fifth highest of all time. That's more than a full house at Celtic Park these days. Incredible to imagine a club from the conservation village of Lugar can have such a major achievement in their history. The task for 'Port supporters in two weeks time is to suss out a Lugar supporter who can proudly boast 'I was there!'

Another 'it's a small world' tale. Tayport committee member was in Prague last week, sharing a taxi with another Scot. The conversation quickly got round to the 'where are you from?' bit. 'Oh, Tayport' says our man. 'Tayport that has the football team?' says the fellow traveller, 'My dad's from Prestwick and he was there last Saturday supporting his team, Glenafton'. So, our man and the guy's old man met up at the replay for a chin

wag.

Still on Tayport committee members, or at least former committee mem-hers of fairly recent vintage in this case. They get all over, these Tayport old boys, but still manage to keep in touch with the cup action through Port's Newsline. One was giving a speech in Belgrade the other week, the other was in the Phillipines 'scrutinising a furniture manufacturer' an d attending a furniture exhibition.

Put Sunday 17th July in your diary. That's when Tayport FC has been invited to play a 16 a side challenge match against Scotscraig Bowling Club on the local green. SBC El Presidente, Martin Gourlay, a regular at the Canniepairt, has is-sued the challenge and, with a several in the Football Club who fancy their chances on the bowling green, a keen contest is envisaged.

Ball boy Stuart Adamson is well on the road to recovery after breaking a leg at training last week. Physio Norrie's diagnosis was spot-on, as was confirmed at 9wells and Stuart will remain plastered up for another month. The players had a whip round and autographed a card for young Stuart who was forced to miss the replay at New Cumnock
