3. Introduction :APOGEE Prepress can handle JDF from Krause Imposition Manager (KIM). This document explains how you need to create a job in KIM for outputting JDF to process correctly in :APOGEE Prepress. It also gives a brief introduction on the use of KIM.

3.1. KIM requirements

4. Configuration

4.1. KIM configuration

Share a location where you want to save the JDF files. Make sure that it is accessible by the :Apogee Prepress server.

4.2. :APOGEE Prepress configuration JDF files from KIM can be used in :Apogee Prepress in 2 ways, depending on the system license.

With :Apogee Integrate, you can set the Impose Task Processor to ‘From input’ and import the output JDF file, which we will create in the next chapters, in the JDF Import Taskprocessor.

In this way the content files are automatically imported as well and automatically placed in the correct runlist positions.

With :Apogee Manage (and also :Apogee Integrate), you can set the Impose Task Processor to ‘From file’ and browse to the output JDF file which we will create in the next chapters.

In this way you can’t place the content files in KIM but you need to place them manually in the correct runlist positions in :Apogee.

5. Job creation in KIM

5.1. Technical Terms

A ‘Job’ contains all settings for a specific job. Every job is based on Pages and Imposition Schemes. These schemes are saved in the default KIM ‘Imposition Schemes’ folder.

You can select more than one ‘Imposition Scheme’ in a job.

The ‘Marks’ that are used on the press sheet are saved in the default KIM ‘PDF-Marks’ folder.

More technical information can be found in the ‘KIM User Hand Book’.

5.2. Job Creation for JDF output

Create a new Job

Choose ‘File’, ‘New’.

In the ‘Job Description’ window you need to enter a Job Title and Order and possible other ‘Administration information’

Click ‘Next’



In the ‘Product’ window choose the trim size and the binding style, and specify the product part name and the number of pages.

Click ‘Next’

In the ‘Production Intents’ window choose a press that is large enough to fit an 8up imposition. In this example, choose ‘SPEEDMASTER 790’

Select ’70 x 100 cm’ for Paper and ‘Work And Back’ for Workstyle



Select ‘JDF Output to ApogeePrepress’ for Output

Click the button and in the ‘Output Profiles’ window click the Properties button

In the ‘Folder’ pane browse to the shared location where you want to save the JDF. Make sure that it is accessible by the :APOGEE Prepress server. Check the ‘Markfile into folder’ option and browse to the same shared location.

To be sure all content files always end up on the correct position, select ‘Align to Plate’, but be aware that the output size in :APOGEE Prepress will be the plate size instead of the sheet size.



Enter a new output size that is equal to the Press Paper size (1000 x 700 mm), give it a name and click

the button to add it to the drop down list.

Keep all other settings default and click ‘OK’ twice

Click ‘Finish’

Select the Imposition Scheme

In the main window, select the button in the upper toolbar.

In this window you can specify the Imposition scheme.



Click the button to open the ‘Impose’ window

Browse to the ‘Imposition Schemes’ folder and select ’16 pp Cross’ from the schemes list

Click ‘OK’



Change the Printsheet Details

In the general imposition window, select the button from the upper Tool bar

Click the button in the right side Tool bar if you want to vertically center the print sheet on the plate. You can use one of the other buttons if you want to center horizontally or align the sheet on one of the plate sides.

Click the button to change the gutters.



Move the cursor over the print sheet and click on the gutter you want to change. Apply ’20 mm width’ for gutters that are cut away after trimming and ‘6 mm width’ for gutters in the spine.

Close the ‘Define Gutters’ window



Add Print Marks

In the main window, select the button

Click the ‘Add Markset’ button

Select ‘Standard, 900 x 640 mm’ and choose to add ‘All’

Close the window



Add Content Pages


Select ‘Register PDF documents’ from the Edit menu or click the button in the tool bar

In the 'Register/Import PDF Document' window, click ‘Open’ and browse to the content files

Note: these content files should be on a shared location which is accessible by the :APOGEE Prepress server.

Click ‘Open’



When the document is imported click ‘Close'. You can see that the content file is added to the Job.



6. Output to JDF


Click the button in the lower part of the window

In the ‘Start Output’ window select ‘All Sheets’



Click ‘OK’ to start the output

Note: KIM generates at the root a ‘JDF’ file and a ‘<JDFfilename>_MARKS.pdf’ file. The ‘content files’ remain at the shared location.

Depending on the license, import these files in the JDFImport Task Processor or select the JDF file in the Impose Task Processor.
