1.4.1 ME 492 Bitirme Projesi
Topics for ME 492 Spring 2014
Mechanical Structures and Systems Projects
1. Chassis Design for Boğaziçi University Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car
Boğaziçi University hydrogen fuel cell car
(BUHAR) is very energy efficient vehicle so that
it can travel 1367 km with 1 liter gasoline
equivalent hydrogen fuel. In order to have a
better vehicle, its chassis should be improved in
many ways. Currently, it has two wheels in the
front and one wheel at the back. This
configuration will not be changed. However, a
new chassis material may be selected to make it
lighter and stronger (currently it is made of
aluminum). A safe roll bar and an ergonomic
pilot seat will be designed. Optimum locations for
the electronic system, safety belt connection
points and chassis & shell connection points should be found. Overall the chassis should
conform to the safety regulations of the fuel cell vehicle race. The stress analysis of the chassis
should be made by using the finite element method. Once the new chassis design is completed, it
will be manufactured.
2. Design of Drivetrain, Steering and Braking Systems for Boğaziçi
University Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car
The steering and braking systems of Boğaziçi
University hydrogen fuel cell car (BUHAR)
need to be improved. The vehicle has two wheels
in the front and one wheel at the back. Currently,
it has rear wheel steering and this causes rollover
problems. The vehicle should have front wheel
steering with a maximum turning diameter of 12
m. The braking system should be designed such
that it provides even braking torque on the two
front wheels to have stable deceleration
performance. Before the race, the vehicle’s
brakes are tested by putting the vehicle on a
ramp. One should ensure that it will be stationary
on this ramp. Finally, drivetrain of the vehicle
should be improved so that the electric motor
12
power is transferred to the rear wheel with
maximum efficiency.
3. Electricity Generation from a Heat Engine
Heat engines are used to convert heat energy into mechanical
energy. In this project, the aim is to generate electricity from
an organic Rankine cycle heat engine. The heat source of the
engine will be the Sun and a 1 m2 parabolic solar collector is
already available. The other components (expander, pump,
condenser) of the cycle will be designed/selected to build a
prototype to produce mechanical energy. Then, a suitable
electrical generator will be implemented to extract the
maximum amount of electricity from this system. The
students are expected to improve the performance of the
parabolic trough available, and select a proper fluid and
temperature range for the power cycle.

electricity-and-hot-water-for-african-communities/
4. Magnetic Tuned Mass Damper
External vibrations can harm the
operation of structures, machines,
devices, etc. A tuned mass damper
(TMD) is a device consisting of a mass,
a spring, and a damper that is attached
to a system in order to reduce the
vibrations of that system. The natural
frequency of the TMD is tuned to a
particular resonance frequency of the
system, so when the structure is excited
at that frequency the TMD will
suppress the motion.
J. Bae, J. Hwang, J. Roh, J. Kim, M. Yi, J. Lim, Journal of Sound and Vibration, 331(26), 5669–5684, 2012
13
The aim in this project is to design and construct a magnetic TMD (see the links:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuCdZLQOrAw, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuTqX5YMGyk). The
TMD should be able to damp the vibrations of a steel beam. The stiffness and damping
characteristics of the TMD should be tunable.
5. Self-Balancing Device for Rotating Machinery
http://www.testdevices.com
6. Prosthetic Hand
When there is unbalance in a rotating
machinery (turbine rotor, drum of a
washing machine, engine flywheel,
etc.), noise and vibrations can occur,
which reduce the life of shafts and
bearings. If the rotating system is
planar, then static balancing and
dynamic balancing are equivalent.
However, if the out-of-plane
thickness of the rotating system is
large, then dynamic balancing may be
required (see the figures on the left).
Your aim in this project is to design
and manufacture a self-balancing
system for unbalanced rotating
machinery. It should at least correct
single-plane unbalances.
Functional substitution of a lost limb, such as a hand,
is necessary for people with an amputation to
perform daily life manipulations.
Towards this goal, a bionic finger was developed last
year. As a continuation, the students will design and
develop a 1-DOF prosthetic hand for grasping
objects. The hand will have 3 fingers (thumb, index,
middle) which will be instrumented with sensors for
contact detection. Movement and force output
performance of the prosthetic hand should be similar
to the human hand.
14
7. Optimized Composite Structure for Gangway Pass
Gangway passes are used as a
bridge to access to a boat from the
shore. An ideal pass is stiff
enough to carry heavy loads
safely, with minimal weight. To
achieve this goal, composite
materials are used that are made
up of multiple-materials used in a
smart geometrical configuration.
The goal of this project is to
design and construct such a smart
geometrical configuration
for a composite gangway
pass so that it has proper
stiffness with minimal
weight.
8. Vertical Wind Turbine
There are various types of wind turbines for extracting
wind energy. In this project the aim is to design and
construct a small vertical wind turbine that can produce 1-
2 kW electrical energy. The number of blades, blade
airfoil profiles, gear train and electrical generator will be
optimized for maximum efficiency and performance.
15
9. Navigation Aid for the Visually Impaired
For the visually impaired students, navigating in the
campus has constant challenges. Researchers are
working to change that by developing vision, GPS or
RFID-based mobility aid systems.
The goal of this project is to design and develop a cane
handle for communicating direction cues to the visually
impaired through tactile feedback. The students will
design a 2-DOF device that is providing fingertip skin
stretch (shear feedback) for directional cues (forward,
back, left, right etc.). The system should be small for
handheld use. It should have low noise and long battery
life.
Thermal/Fluids Systems Projects
10. Temperature controlled magnetic stirrer
A magnetic stirrer is a laboratory equipment that is used to stir a fluid in a container relying on magnetic forces. A rotating magnetic field is used to rotate a stir bar dipped in a fluid that rotates and mixes the fluid. Once the stir bar is rotated, the fluid is mixed or stirred. The device that is to be manufactured is expected to stir different fluids with different viscosities within a given rpm range. Moreover, while the stirrer is in operation, the temperature of the fluid must also be controlled.
16
11. Liquid microprocessor cooling:
Thermal related problems are the leading cause of failure for microprocessors. Liquid cooling systems has been increasingly adopted for cooling of micro-processors due to their improved performance and silent operation. The coolant or working fluid used in the system have significant impact on the performance of liquid cooling system. In this project, effects of using different coolants will be investigated on the performance of a commercial liquid cooling system.
12. Wind tunnel control and instrumentation
Wind tunnels are widely used for testing thermal and flow behavior of engineering systems, such as missiles, aircrafts, automobiles, heat exchangers or heat sinks. In this
project, instrumentation and control of an operating laboratory scale, wind tunnel located in the ME Laboratories in the ground floor of New Hall is to be designed and implemented so that controlled experiments can be carried out. The wind tunnel should be controlled through a PC and its use must be demonstrated via a flow/ thermal measurement/visualization experiments.
17
13. Heat engine based on Stirling Cycle :
14. Solar power tower with heliostat reflectors:
A small scale, Stirling heat engine is to be manufactured for producing useful work from low temperature heat sources as in the case of solar/thermal or geothermal energy systems. The heat engine must operate for a temperature difference of approximately 100 K between its hot and cold reservoirs. It is desired to produce useful work in the form of electric power using the engine.
Concentrating solar energy systems rely on concentrating solar energy to a smaller area to heat the working fluid to high temperatures. Solar power towers are a major kind of
concentrating solar energy system. In these systems, heliostats that are solar tracking mirrors that are used to reflect solar rays to a power tower throughout the day. In this project you are expected to manufacture a working demo unit with a small power tower with at least two heliostats demonstrating how such systems work. Your demonstration setup must include a light source that mimics the motion of sun.
18
15. Solar desalination:
With increasing population and diminishing sources of clean water, access to clean water is considered as one of the major challenges we must tackle in the upcoming
decades. Desalination plants are considered as one of the solutions to the problem; however, the energy required for these plants constitute a roadblock for their use. Solar desalination systems offer a solution by using solar energy. In this project, a small scale prototype of an industrial solar desalination plant is to be designed. This unit must operate with no external energy source, differ from a solar powered desalination plant and should be able to produce fresh water from sea water continuously.
16. Stream power
Bosporus, the strait that separates Black sea and Marmara Sea not only provides excellent views colored with Judas trees during spring time, but also offers a great potential to produce useful work. In this project it is desired to manufacture a system that can produce useful work in the form of electricity utilizing the stream power available in Bosporus. The systems must be eco-friendly, operating with minimal impact to the marine life. The operation of the systems must be demonstrated within a facility that is suitable for testing the device.
Source: http://subseaworldnews.com/2013/04/18/alstom-shows-tidal-stream-power-generation-video/
19
17. Concentrating PV system:
Photovoltaic (PV) cells are direct conversion devices that can produce useful work in the form of electric power from solar energy. As their use is gaining popularity, ways of increasing their efficiency in terms of power produced per cell area is sought to decrease the cost of these systems. One way of achieving this goal is to use concentrating PV systems where solar energy is concentrated on to the PV cell. However, increasing the incident solar intensity over the cell
also leads to heating of the cell that deteriorated the cell’s conversion efficiency. In this project a concentrating PV system is to be manufactured. Thermal management of the cell is required to maintain high conversion efficiency in the system built. Moreover, to benefit from the maximum available solar energy during the day a solar tracking system should also be implemented.

Topics for ME 429
Fall 2014
Mechanical Structures and Systems Projects
1. Robotic Basketball Shooter
A good basketball shooter scores from different
locations on the court with high accuracy.
Your aim is to design a robotic basketball shooter.
The distance between the shooter and the rim can be
up to 1m. The robotic basketball shooter should
determine the orientation and distance of the rim by
itself and then shoot a 3-5 cm diameter ball with
proper speed so as to score it.
2. Anthropomorphic Robotic Hand
Functional substitution of a lost limb, such as a
hand, is necessary for persons with an amputation to
perform daily life manipulations.
Towards this goal, a bionic 3-finger robotic hand
was developed last year. As a continuation, the
students will design and develop an
anthropomorphic robotic hand for grasping objects.
The hand will have 5 fingers. Movement and force

output performance of the prosthetic hand should be
similar to the human hand.
22
3. Light-weight Robotic Arm
4. Platform for Planar Movement
Robotic arm designs face the tradeoff between high
payload and low weight.
The aim of this project is to design and develop a 3-DOF
robotic manipulator that can be used for general
purposes. The robotic manipulator should resemble the
dimensions of a typical human arm (overall length 50-70
cm, weight 5-6 kg, payload 1-2 kg). (Photo courtesy of
Universal Robots)
Touch screen technology necessitates actuated
systems for haptic (force/touch) feedback. For
this purpose, Haptics & Robotics Lab is
developing a novel touch screen to be integrated
into mobile phones. Towards this goal, a 2-DOF
planar actuation mechanism is required.
The goal of this project is to design and develop a milli-scale 2-DOF platform (dimensions
120x180 mm) for micrometer-scale planar movements. The design may be based on flexible
joints and actuated by piezoelectric actuators.

5. Regenerative Braking Test Setup
http://www.formula1-
dictionary.net/kers.html
Conventional brakes on a vehicle convert the kinetic
energy of the vehicle into heat, which is dissipated.
A regenerative brake system slows the vehicle by
converting its kinetic energy into another form of
energy, which can be used when needed.
Your aim in this project is to design a regenerative
braking test setup that will recover the kinetic energy
of a flywheel (at least 1 kg mass) that is initially
rotating at 1000 rpm. The kinetic energy of the
flywheel can be stored in any energy form. When the
flywheel comes to complete a stop, it should wait for
10 seconds and then the stored energy will be released
to accelerate the flywheel. You will try to maximize
the regenerative braking efficiency (i.e., maximize the
final speed of the flywheel).
6. Active Vibration Isolation System
Mechanical vibrations can either damage
or impede the operation of vehicles,
home appliances, measurement devices,
etc. Unwanted vibrations can be isolated
with the use of passive, adaptive or
active systems.
Active vibration isolation systems
contain, along with a spring, a feedback
circuit, which consists of a sensor (e.g.
an accelerometer), a controller, and
an actuator (e.g. a voice coil). The
vibration (acceleration) signal is
processed by the control circuit and the amplifier. Then, the amplified signal is fed to the
actuator, which counteracts the vibrations.
Your aim is to design a small scale SDOF active vibration isolation system for demonstration
purposes.

7. Vibration Energy Harvester
Many electronic devices such as
quartz watches or wireless
communication systems require
electrical power on the order of
microwatts or milliwatts. Vibrating
structures in our environment such
as home appliances, vehicles or
bridges can be used to power these
electronic devices if some of the
mechanical energy in these
structures is converted into
electrical energy.
Your aim in this project is to design a vibration energy harvester that can power a quartz watch.
The size of the harvester should be so that the watch and the harvester system can fit ones
pocket.

8. Vertical Take-off and Landing Aircraft
Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircrafts can
take-off, land and hover vertically. Unlike conventional
airplanes, they do not require long runways for take-off
and landing.
The purpose of this project is to design a small scale
unmanned aircraft that can take-off and land vertically.
The design should have some key performances like
minimum weight, long range cruise, high useful load
and sustained flight at desired airspeed. Strength and
aerodynamic analysis of this design should be done.
9. Modular Solar Desalination Pond
With increasing population and
diminishing sources of clean water,
access to clean water is considered as
one of the major challenges in the
upcoming decades. Desalination
plants are considered as one of the
solutions to the problem; however, the
energy required for these plants
constitute a roadblock for their use.
Solar desalination systems offer a
solution by using solar energy. In this
project, a small scale prototype of an
industrial solar desalination plant is to
be designed. This unit must operate
with no external energy source, differ
from a solar powered desalination
plant, should be able to continuously
produce fresh water and salt at the same time from sea water. The prototype must be modular, so
that different boiling/evaporation or condensation surfaces/coatings can be used.

10. Test Unit for CPU Liquid Cooling Systems
Thermal related problems are the leading cause of
failure for microprocessors. Liquid cooling
systems has been increasingly adopted for cooling
of micro-processors due to their improved
performance and silent operation. The coolant or
working fluid used in the system have significant
impact on the performance of liquid cooling
system. In this project, first a suitable test unit will
be designed to characterize and test a liquid cooling
system as a system and all of its individual
components. The setup will then be used to
investigate the effect of coolant on the
performance of a liquid cooling system so that
an optimal coolant can be designed.
11. Test Unit for Different Boiling/Condensation Technologies
Phase change (boiling/condensation) systems are
used in many applications such as vapor compression
refrigeration, electronics cooling, or energy
conversion systems. It is desired to characterize the
phase change behavior in order to design and
optimize systems such as heat pipe in a laptop
computer, vapor chamber of a server, evaporator or
condenser of a power plant, or a refrigerator.
Experimental investigations are considered as the major means
of understanding the boiling/condensation behavior of different
fluids in conjunction with different surfaces used to enhance the
heat transfer due to governing complex physical phenomena. In
this project, a modular test setup will first be designed where
boiling and condensation performance of various fluids, in
conjunction with different surfaces can be characterized and
visualized. The performances of different boiling/condensation
technologies are then measured for evaluation of these
technologies. Different technologies you need to consider
includes different fluids or boiling surfaces etc.

12. Direct Absorption Solar Collector
One other major global problem is the
availability of energy sources that has
minimal impact on our ecosystem. Use of
renewable energy sources constitute one of
the most widely accepted solutions to the
energy problem and solar energy is one of
the major resources that can be utilized to
meet the need. In a conventional solar
collector, a surface that absorbs the solar
energy is used to heat the working fluid. In a
direct absorption solar system an opaque
working fluid is used so that the fluid directly absorbs the solar energy. Opaque fluids can be
produced by enriching a regular fluid with nanoparticles. In this project you are expected to
design and manufacture a direct absorption solar collector. Once the setup is built, you are
expected to test the performance of the direct absorption solar collector.
13. Solar Heat Pipe
Heat pipes are passive cyclic devices
benefiting from high efficiency of
phase change processes that have a
very high effective thermal
conductance. Therefore, it is possible
to transfer larger quantities of heat
over smaller temperature difference.
Solar heat pipes are solar collectors
that operates based on the principles
of heat pipe. The use of solar heat
pipe collectors are gaining popularity
especially in Europe due to their
advantages. In this project a solar
heat pipe prototype is to be designed,
and manufactured. The prototype is
then tested for evaluating its
performance.

14. Wave Energy Generation Using Wells Turbine
Sea or ocean waves constitute a great
potential as an energy resource for
replacing carbon based resources.
However, designing and building an
efficient, economically feasible system is
very challenging as the structure converting
the energy stored in strong ocean waves
must be built very strong to survive strong
these waves leading to a significant initial
cost. One of the solutions considered for
the challenge is building these structures to
shallower regions of concentrated wave
spots where the wave sizes are limited.
For such cases using wells turbines is a
popular alternative. A wells turbine’s
blade rotates in the same rotational direction (CW or CCW) independent of the direction of axial
flow; therefore, it can be used to produce work using a fluctuating flow. In this project,
prototype of a wave energy harvesting system with a wells turbine that is capable of producing
useful work (electricity) from sea waves is to be designed and manufactured. The prototype
should be able to be mounted (and demounted) somewhere nearby and its performance must be
tested.
15. Non-Destructive Fault Detection Using Thermal Tomography
Multi layered structures and thermal interfaces
constitute extreme importance in high heat flux
dissipation systems such as in the case of
semiconductor packaging. Non-destructive detection of
voids or flaws in the thermal interfaces is necessary to
identify possible problems in the assembly process
recipe. Using temperature measurement instead of
optical or acoustical means such as x-ray tomography
or CSAM that require expensive equipment would
introduce significant benefit for product development.
A simple test setup that demonstrates the idea of object
characterization using principles of thermal diffusion
tomographic imaging is to be designed and the method
must be demonstrated experimentally.

16. Thermoelectric Solar Power Generation
While PV cells are the most widely adopted
light-to- electricity direct conversion
devices, another option for producing
electricity from sun is using thermo-electric
generators. Thermoelectric power
generators rely on the Seebeck effect and
they are solid state heat engines with no
moving parts. While
their possible use in solar systems has been long been ignored, recent studies show the possibility of such
generators. This project focuses on using thermoelectric generators for solar energy conversion. A
feasibility study and a prototype must be designed first relying on theoretical/numerical analysis. The
designed system must be manufactured and tested next.
