BIKEWAYS ROUTE ADOPTED TWO BIKEWAY ROUTES have now been adopted by the Marina Area Chamber of Commerce. Shown discussing progress on the project to date are Bikeways Committee Chairman Ken Rosskopf (seated) and Committee Member Bill Barker.

The first route adopted - which would be immediately useable by cyclists of all ages with approval from the various authorities involved and the posting of suitable signs along it - would use Ocean Front Walk from Santa Monica to Washington Blvd. It would continue along Pacific Avenue to the Marina enh·ance at Via Marina, circle through the Marina on Admiralty Way, follow Fiji Way to the breakwater and along the top of the breakwater to the Ballona Creek Bridge, across the bridge to 62nd Place then Esplanada in Playa del Rey, south to Culver Blvd. , then west to a service road on the beach, and south on this road to the fire pits at Isidore Dockweiler State Beach.

The second adopted route, and the ultimate goal for the project, would follow the same basic plan as the first, with greater separation of the bicycles from other traffic and brief al ternate routes in some places.

At the present time the Bikeways plan is being brought to the attention of the various organizations and service clubs in this area, with an eye to seeking all possible support for it prior to its presentation for approval by appropriate county and city officials.

VENICE ARTIST SCULPTS IN METAL

Among the metal objects sculpted by 31 year old Venice artist Lee Rice and on view at Marina del Rey are metal boats made from big tin cans ( such as boat shown on cover, now at Trade Winds Marina), and a large whale at Windward Yacht & Repair fashioned from a sheet of copper that once protected the keel of a boat.

Simple as some of his materials may seem, such things as these - and the numerous birds and animals made from wire and nuts and bolts on individual commissions and for the lively decorator trade - are building a solid reputation for this artist who is also a sometimes sailor.

Untrained in art in a formal sense, and still considering himself essentially a painter rather than a sculptor, Mr. Rice began young. He became a member of the Casper, Wyoming, Art Association at the age of 10. By 12, he had begun selling some of his sketches and drawings, and in high school at Indio, California, he was a winner in the National Date Festival art competition for three years running.

Now a resident of Venice, Mr. Rice is the father of four children, ranging in age from nine to 13, all of whom enjoy sailing in the family sabot. Mr. Rice's own sailing hereabouts- besides that in his recently sold 16' outrigger Koloki (which means erratic, unstable) - has included crewing aboard Errol Flynn's 75' ketch Sirocco when it was at Portofino Marina, Ensenada racing aboard the 40' catamaran Dreamer, plus a stint of crewing aboard the 56' yawl Sea Lark.

Working for the most part with whatever material is at hand - which sometimes turns out to be tin cans, wire, or just plain bits of junk - Mr. Rice explains his technique as first sketching the object that is to be sculpted. He then reduces the sketch to its basic lines, and finally with tinsnips, bending tools, and a welding torch fashions his drawing into a final three dimensional permanence in metal. The evidence of how well he succeeds at this lies in the growing demand for his work by individuals and by many of this area's outstanding interior decorators.

MAN OVERBOARD BY BETTY LEVESON

Fortunately very few of us will ever be called upon to handle a boat when someone has fallen overboard but the danger is always there and a person's life may depend upon your knowledge of handling a boat properly. It is of great importance that the skipper and his mate discuss and plan the procedure. Rescue drills may be staged by throwing a cushion overboard and then maneuver to pick it up.

When someone falls overboard, always mark the spot and give aid by throwing a life ring and other floatable cushions near the fallen person, taking care not to hit him. If there is any sign that he is sick, injured or cannot swim, have someone who can swim jump in after him. But otherwise keep your whole crew on board. One uninjured man is always easier to rescue than two.

With a powerboat, or an auxi liary under power, steam ahead a minute or so, then give full rudder one way, then full rudder the opposite way, so as to describe a full circle ahead of the spot where the man has fallen. Then steam back along your wake, watching for the floating objects. Don't try to turn too short. You will not come back along your wake and may come up ei ther ahead or behind the man overboard and steam away from him or be forced to circle again losing precious minutes. That is the most common error under sail or power. Use the natural turning radius of your boat and don't try to turn more quickly.

Under sail, the standard practice is to "wear" back to the man, turning with the stern to the wind and jibing in the process. A jibe is often quicker than a tack because it puts you to leeward of the man and you come up to him into the wind. If the wind is blowing hard and there is question about the wisdom of a jibe, it may be faster to tack. In tacking, bear away first, then spin the boat about quickly, then bear away hard to get to leeward of the man and come into the wind for the rescue.

For the person aboard a sailboat who cannot sail but finds himself in the position of having to make a rescue, the best procedure may be to release all the sheets immediately. The boat should come up into the wi nd and the man overboard will have to make his way to the boat.

The man who has fa llen overboard should look for the li fe ring that has been thrown to him, swim to it and cling there, conserving all his energy. A properly fitted li fe ring should have a water light attached to it that lights

WEATHER FORECASTER TO SPEAK AT DEL REY

All Santa Monica Bay YC members are invited to attend a talk on Marine Weather Forecasting at Del Rey YC on Thursday evening, September 28, at 8 p.m.

Guest speaker for the evening will be Gordon Shields, a marine meteorologist, who presently he~ds up 0e Marine Weather Forecastmg Section of the U.S. Weather Bureau.

Mr. Shields who has in addition to his present role served as an Air Force Weather Officer during World War II, then as a U.S. Weather Bureau Aviation Forecaster, will explain how modem forecasting can predict the state of the sea, swells, and surf. His talk, which will cover how to obtain weather information and how to read and understand weather charts, will also discuss the latest developments in forecasting resulting from the photographs being made by the new weather satellites.

From Our Readers Dear Sirs:

This concerns stinkpot and rag men alike. It has been observed on numerous vessels that an adequate electrolysis system does not appear on the majority of the boats, regardless of size, sail or power.

There have been in Marina del Rey a few sinkings directly attributed to electrolysis. The last known vessel sank only a few weeks ago. It was an H-~8 nam~d "Tina", which sank at her shp in Villa Del Mar anchorage. The particular thru-hull fitting which gave way on this boat happened to be a knot indicator.

There are approximately 53 variations of electrolysis, and these can become extremely complicated. However, the majority of vessels can be protected by running a solid copper wire from both the anode and the cathode (two bolts) which run through a zinc plate usually located on the transom or bottom of a boat and attaching it to the rudder, the engine, to all metal thru-hull fittings , and to all electronics. The idea is that this easily replaceable zinc plate, as the softest metal available, will then be the first metal to be attacked by any electrolytic action that may occur.

Electrolysis is a very vital part of protecting your boat. It will pay you to understand it.

A. A. Cloud

The talk will be followed by a question and answer period. Hosting the presentation for Del Rey YC will be Education Committee Chairman Mark Segal.

New Ericson-26 Officers Named

Officers of the newly formed Ericson-26 National Association will be: Jay Tharp, President; Bill Grant, Vice President; Julie Elliott, SecretaryTreasurer; and Wes Coss, Chief Measurer.

National Championship races for the Ericson-26 class are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 23 and 24 off Marina del Rey. Hosting the event will be Windjammers YC.

NOTICE The Marina de) Rey Fire

Department is interested in seeing any of the movies or still photos taken during the fire aboard a 26' Trojan in the Marina's main channel at about 12: 15 on Sunday, August 13.

The pictures are wanted for use in future firefighting training programs. The number to call for those having, or knowing a source of, such pictures is: 823-4571, Ext. 49.

In a ceremony early this month the South Coast Corinthians YC at Marina del Rey inaugurated a chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel, an organization limited in membership to Past Commodores.

Fonned in Seattle in 1953, the Bfoe Gavel organization has since grown to include hundreds of YCs tlu·oughout the world.

Speaking as toastmaster, Staff Commodore Cliff Smith said, "I regard it as significant that SCCYC, the oldest yacht club in the Santa Monica Bay area, should also be the first to honor its past commodores throl!'gh the forming of this chapter."

Shown in photos are some of the 14 Staff Commodores and their ladies who attended the event as honored guests.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM "PAINT CAN DRIP?"

When you paint, does the paint fill the groove in the rim of the can, run down the sides and get all over the boat? When you replace the lid, does the paint splatter and mn some more?

When asked these questions in a recent survey, 65 per cent of boat owners said, "Yes! # "%@+=¢&"$#%!" Five per cent said, "Yes, some. But I paint out of another can with a smooth lip."

The remaining 30 per cent who said, "No," broke down as follows. Ten per cent ( the loaded) said, "I have someone else do the work." Another 10 per cent ( the lazv) said "I onlv use spray paint." And the remainder ( the very lazy) simply said, "I never paint."

Common as paint can drip is, it is not a necessity. And it is certainly not . a luxury. You can take this pain out of painting with a single stroke - the tap of a hammer on the head of a good-sized nail standing in the groove in the rim of the can - although it is better if you make two or three more holes, spaced equidistantly around the groove.

Then, excess paint from tl.e bmsh will flow rapidly back into the can. The groove will never fill, and paint will not run down the sides and drip. The label remains unsmeared. When you replace the lid, paint will not splatter, and the holes will be closed automatically by the lip or tongue of the lid.

Perhaps manufacturers of cans will one day supply paint manufacturers with cans in which holes like this have already been made. Such manufacturers may send royalty checks c/o The Dinghy. Meantime, relief from paint can drip is but a tap away.

MANU KAI, THE 37' CAT AM ARAN belonging to Lance Reventlow and his wife Cheryl can be seen on most days resting sedately on an end tie at Marina de! Rey's Imperial Harbour Marina.

What few who see her now are likely to guess is that she was the first of her kind. Her name - Manu Kai - means bird-of-the sea, and 20 years ago she was the first of the Honolulu "beach cats". Also, after a long study by a glider pilot and designer named Woody Brown and a boatbuilder named Alfred Kumalae of ancient Polynesian boats in the Honolulu Museum, she was in 1946 the first large catamaran to be built in about 2,000 years.

An immediate commercial success after her launching in 1947, Manu Kai for several years made four 15-knot trips a day, seven days each week off Diamond Head, with passenger loads in the early days of as many as 36 people plus her twoman crew. While establishing the whole "beach cat" business, and being the prototype of what is now called the "Manu Kai" design, she herself carried an estimated 240,000 passengers. She still holds a speed record of 28 knots, officially clocked in 1949 - then and still the fastest sailboat speed ever recorded off Diamond Head.

Purchased in 1960 by Reventlow, she was sailed for about a year in her original condition. Then her length was shortened from 39' 6" to her present 37'. Other modernizations were added, including a cabin, a set of yellow and white striped sails, and a rainbow colored spinnaker.

As a private racing craft she was the first catamaran to finish in the 1962 Ensenada race. More importantly perhaps, during the three years Manu Kai has been at Marina de! Rey, she has clone much to revitalize interest in big catamarans as a class - a class in which she herself 20 hard working years ago was just about the only member.

up when it its the water. The water li ght should be on a ten foot line so the man will not be burned when he grabs the buoy. The water light is most necessary at night and even in daylight the column of smoke from it makes a most valuable beacon. A cheap whistle attached to the !rife ring is also very helpful.

When you get close to the man in the water, heave him a line. Then pull him gently and slowly alongside. Rig the

swim ming ladder if you have one, or drop a bowline over as a step. If possible let him do the climbing. Don 't pull him. If the man is exhausted, however, you must pull him out. Let him face the boat and give you hi s hands . Cross your hands before tak,ing his and as you raise him above the rail he will be sitting on deck. If the man is heavy, two men should lift him and HIS hands should be crossed.

Since I am no authority on the subject, most of the above was taken from a book written by H . A. Calahan.
