06 De Krook and Wintercircus De Krook is a multipurpose location for working and shopping, and also houses the city library. Two new bridges allow pedestrians and cyclists to easily access the city centre. From the Miriam Makeba square, cyclists can follow an incline to directly access a bicycle parking. In the adjacent Wintercircus, office space will be created for organizations and businesses working for instance on digital innovation in media. A concert hall for about 500 people has been planned underneath the inner ring. 07 Visserij Visserij was one of the first bicycle boulevards. These are streets where cyclists have the absolute right of way and where cars cannot overtake. Visserij is part of green climate axis 3 - Zeeschelde. It starts at Krommewal/Minnemeers and goes all the way to greenhub Gentbrugse Meersen. Ghent has eight climate axes. They connect the open space and mainly the five green hubs with the (inner) city. They are intended for use by walkers and bikers. 08 Keizerpark This park was created in the framework of urban renewal project Ledeberg Lives. Urban renewal projects renovate neighbourhoods in various aspects such as residential, green, sports, commerce and mobility. The park now boasts a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that connects Ledeberg and Gentbrugge with the city centre. Its success is so overwhelming that traffic measures were necessary, such as the conversion of Visserij to a bicycle boulevard. It is home to among others the De Bijloke music centre and KASK (royal academy of fine arts), but also STAM. This city museum tells the story of Ghent. Eyecatchers include a large aerial photograph of Ghent and temporary exhibitions on the city of tomorrow. The STAM and the Bijloke site are found along green climate axis 6. 04 Verlorenkost This is one example of a cut (a closed street) in the circulation plan. The latter plan opened up space for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation. The public space was temporarily reorganized. From the Verlorenkost bridge you have a view of the recent residential project Leiekouter. 05 Rijksarchief (national archives) The striking building clad in white, glazed brick on your left houses the national archives. The ground floor of this closed building consists almost entirely of glass, to emphasize its accessibility. A new courtyard was created at the back. 01 Point of departure: Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station With over 54,000 travellers boarding trains every day, the Gent-Sint- Pieters railway station is Belgium’s third railway station by volume. At the moment, it is being converted into a public transportation junction with integrated bus and tram station, covered bicycle parking lot, and underground parking garage. Along the railway tracks, in the Koningin Fabiolalaan and along the Koningin Mathildeplein, a new part of the city is being built with commercial spaces, offices, apartments, and green public space. The conversion of the railway station area is one of the urban development projects. These are large-scale projects that alter the cityscape and which involve the application of all principles behind Space for Ghent. THOUGHTFUL USE OF SPACE IN GHENTThe population of Ghent is growing and this requires space: affordable housing in a pleasant area with enough green, options for relaxation, employment, accessibility and open spaces for agriculture and nature development.

Space is scarce, and we need to fi nd the right place for all of these societal needs. This requires thoughtful spatial policy. Not only in the short term, but the long term as well.

The 2030 Structural Vision describes this policy. This is a structural plan that is centred not only around space, but also the people. And this is unique. Small wonder, as it was developed in conjunction with the people of Ghent, users of Ghent, and experts.

HOW DO WE GROW WISELY?We wish to grow ‘wisely’. This means that we will not allow for unchecked growth. We situate the desired spatial developments within the current residential, professional, recreational, and facility destinations. How will we accomplish this? Here are our 5 strategies for facing the challenges in a sustainable and clever manner.

Smart densifi cation and aeratingIn order to accommodate the population growth and need for additional residences, we will implement smart densifi cation and aerating. This means doing more with the available space. For instance building new homes in easily accessible places, and providing more open spaces in other locations.

Cleverly interweaving functionsWe are creating a city where homes, jobs, leisure, and facilities are all found within close proximity. Where greenery is present and people can safely travel by bicycle or public transportation. This is achieved by interweaving all of these functions. It enhances social cohesion and creates space for economic growth.

Stimulating sustainable mobilityWe focus on bicycle urbanism. A network of roads and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists forms the basis for urban development. Facilities link up with this network, which allows it to be profoundly embedded into the structure of the city. At the same time, we aim to achieve selective accessibility. A liveable city must be accessible, but not all the time, everywhere, or in every way.

Providing green and waterGreen and water make the city a pleasant place to live and relax. This is why we are creating a network of blue and green throughout the city. Waterways bring green into the centre and provide cooling, reducing the heat island effect. We green the banks and improve the water quality.

The human focusOur point of reference when we shape space is the living environment of the residents and users of Ghent. We are creating a city for everyone, with everyone. Hence, we emphasize the collective over the individual: we share spaces where we can live, work, and be creative (cohousing, coworking, cocreation). Temporary uses breathe new life into locations..

Ride underneath the railway tracks and follow number 7 of the cycling network going left. Pass by the Gentbrugge cemetary. Leave the bicycle path and turn right into Jules Van Biesbroeckstraat. At the point where the dirt road changes into a paved road, turn left. Cross Gentbruggekouter. Keep going until you reach the Welzijnsknoop and the park located behind it 14 .. Ride past the Welzijnsknoop on the right through the park and take the exit towards Ledebergstraat, to the right of the garage boxes. Turn right and immediately left into Doorgangstraat. Turn left into Hoefi jzerstraat towards the corner residence Hoekijzerstraat 15

Turn back and follow Doorgangstraat as it bends to the left until you reach Weldadigheidsstraat. You can ride underneath the houses in front of you. Get off your bike and take the path next to the entrance to the underground parking towards enclosed area Moriaanstraat-Weldadigheidsstraat 16 . Ride diagonally through this enclosed area and take the exit at Moriaanstraat. Go right into Moriaanstraat and then go left into Vlinderstraat. Ride into Park De Vijvers 17 towards Brusselsesteenweg and cross this road towards P+R Gentbrugge 18 . Follow Land van Rodelaan and at the bicycle crossing go left into Oude Brusselseweg. Follow Oude Brusselseweg. Beyond the Victoria Regia park, turn right into Kleemburg, where you will fi nd Den Draad 19 . Keeping left, ride through this project along the houses. Take the bicycle exit and ride towards the roundabout (with statue) in Louis Van Houttestraat. Turn left. Further on the right is the old Sint-Antonius van Padua church. Ghent, a rare combination

Ghent combines the intimacy of a historic city with the openness of a metropolis.

With about 260,000 residents and more than 75,000 students, Ghent is versatile, historic, and contemporary all at once. A pioneer when it comes to higher education. A city of the arts with international renown. An economically oriented city that focuses on innovation and knowledge technologies.

The local administration stimulates the many initiatives put forth by its citizens who strive towards an open, inclusive, sustainable, wise, and child-friendly city.
