Slide 8 8 Source: Future Value Chain 2020, TCGF, Capgemini, HP, Microsoft Slide 9 9 Slide 10 10 Source: Future Value Chain 2020, TCGF, Capgemini, HP, Microsoft Slide 11 11 Source: Future Value Chain 2020, TCGF, Capgemini, HP, Microsoft Slide 12 2011 GS1 Supply Chains are global and complex 12 And sometimes ugly too ! Slide 13 13 Why did the Chicken cross the border? Thats the reality of todays business. And the chicken may return in other forms. Slide 14 2011 GS1 The food chain is very complex Source: Gemini 03/06 Slide 15 We know that a lack of proper Traceability and ineffective Recall can cause huge food wastage Global Standards for Traceability & Recall plus automated tools are available and in place in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand Mistaken Identity EU Cucumbers destroyed Still many fires burning globally Slide 16 2011 GS1 Lets look at case studies. Slide 17 2011 GS1 What do you see? Slide 18 2011 GS1 18 Bananas are offered for sale in various stages of ripening Slide 19 2011 GS1 Study on Product Freshness Checking Best Before Dates (Expiry Dates) Slide 20 2011 GS1 Fresh Food Products: Would Purchase if Discounted 20 Slide 21 2011 GS1 New(er) Barcode - DataBar Slide 22 2011 GS1 Considerations: EU Law Consumer Needs to know the price Slide 23 2011 GS1 Solution: Scanner on shelves shows the exact price for variable measure trade items Slide 24 2011 GS1 China: Food Traceability Mobile application to access food traceability information Consumers scan barcode and enter Batch/Lot number printed on packaging GS1 is trusted source and enabler working with Chinese Government Slide 25 2011 GS1 Hong Kong: Organic Food Information Mobile application to promote Healthy Eating, Better Living by eating organic food. Pilot with Association of Green, Organic at Living (GO@L) Features include 1D barcode scanning, product information (nutrient, calories) and data input if product not found, personal profile (weight, exercise, calories consumed and burnt) Slide 26 2011 GS1 Australia: Nutritional Information Nutritional information delivered via a mobile phone application Application helped consumers find healthier products 60% of participants found mobile phone easier to use 31% of participants said they would scan 4 or more products during a shopping trip Slide 27 2011 GS1 Many Best Practices & Implementation Guidelines available http://www.gs1.org/traceability Slide 28 2011 GS1 Summary 28 Slide 29 2011 GS1 Food Security strategies will require non- traditional thinking ! Imagine a local community in north Sumatra where 500 villagers can use their cell phones to check daily prices and availability of (un)harvested produce Then send an order to their local producers using their cell phonesand receive confirmation The producer sends a message to day labourers to attend the farm for harvest And then sends a delivery advice message to villagers and schedules delivery in village locations. Food Security is a local issue first ! The Art of the Possible Slide 30 Food Security strategies require a Balanced and Focused approach Local + Regional + Global Source: Future Value Chain 2020, TCGF, Capgemini, HP, Microsoft Slide 31 2011 GS1 Food Security inputs are needed from all stakeholders Slide 32 My opinion: We have the head & tail strategy only for Food Securitywe need a more effective public-private partnership.and define new ways of working together Slide 33 2011 GS1 Key Take Aways 33 Brands & Retailers care about food security - they care a lot ! Global Data Standards are critical to enable supply chain connectivity, improved visibility and to enable interoperability - but only part of the solution We need to improve stakeholder collaboration - and build lasting trust Traditional thinking needs to be challenged We need to explore new ways of working together between the public and private sectors - improved results / outcomes Slide 34 2011 GS1 Thank You Contact: [email protected] President & Principal Advisor Shantalla Inc. on behalf of GS1 and ABAC REIWG With thanks to GS1 and Consumer Goods Forum for images. 34
