Call for Applications: "Directed by Women" Deadline: October 16th, 5PM

AFCOOP and Women in Film and Television – Atlantic (WIFT-AT) are pleased to announce a call for applications

for a new program called “Directed by Women.” This program will provide mentorship, professional

development and collaboration opportunities to emerging female filmmakers.

“Directed by Women” was created in response to the inequity that exists between the number of female verses

male directors of feature films in Nova Scotia. This gender imbalance is a national problem, but was particularly

apparent provincially during the past two years of the Atlantic Film Festival. Last year, there were only three

narrative feature films directed by women, one of which was from Nova Scotia (Andrea Dorfman). The year

before that, there was only one narrative feature on the entire bill that was directed by a woman (Gia Milani

from New Brunswick).

The factors that contribute to this gender disparity are complex but a few key pieces include access to capital,

access to mentorship and the ability to find collaborators. “Directed by Women” will address these factors

through a blend of classroom training and networking opportunities.

The program will provide eight women with training and mentorship from established female filmmakers on the

topics of screenwriting, directing, working with key crew, pitching and marketing. The focus of this workshop

series will be addressing the challenges inherent in transitioning from shorts to features. The final component of

the program and will include a ‘speed dating’ meet-and-greet with local producers at WIFT-AT’s annual Women

Making Waves conference in March 2016.

AFCOOP and WIFT-AT’s goal with “Directed by Women” is to prepare eight emerging female filmmakers to

direct their own feature films. The program will start at the end of November and will be held on four weekends

throughout the winter until March, when participants will have the opportunity to attend WIFT-AT’s Women

Making Waves conference.

Application Due Date: October 16th, 2015 by 5 PM

Eligibility Requirements: i) Must be emerging (completed at least one short film) to mid-career filmmakers,ii) Must demonstrate a commitment to working professionally in the domain of narrative filmmaking

Curated by Ron Foley MacDonald

Aristotle states, famously, in his Poetics, that “Characters must change”. In Science Fiction, sometimeseverything changes. In this film program we look at a series of transformations, from Fritz Lang’s memorable1927 film Metropolis to two recent adaptations of stories by the maverick Sci-Fi author Philip K. Dick: MinorityReport and A Scanner Darkly. Whether it is humans changing into vegetables—as in Invasion of the BodySnatchers—or particles changing into dangerously unstable elements—as in The Magnetic Monster, whichclimaxes in Nova Scotia—change is constant in Science Fiction, just as it is in technology and identity today.

SCREENINGS WEDNESDAYS AT 8 PM FREE ADMISSION

30 September - Metropolis Fritz Lang, Germany, 1927, 145 mins. Now ‘complete’ with lost footage found in Argentina, Fritz Lang’s famous‘city of the future film’ includes robots replacing humans and mass society gone wildly astray.

7 October - The Magnetic Monster Curt Siodmak, USA, 1953, 76 mins. With an ending set in Cape Breton, and a chunk taken from a 1930sGerman epic, The Magnetic Monster manages to blend ‘hard’ Science Fiction with pulp elements to produce asurprisingly effective cold-war thriller about an experiment with a radioactive particle gone wrong.

14 October - Invasion of the Body Snatchers Don Siegel, USA, 1956, 80 mins. This chilling, much-remade film sees director Don (Dirty Harry) Siegelperfectly capturing the paranoia and conformity of 1950s America, as off-world plants take over from humanswho are distracted by consumerism and social climbing.

A Foundation To Assist Canadian Talent, was created in 1984 concurrent with the launch of MuchMusic, which

committed a percentage of its gross annual revenues to stimulate the production of new Canadian music

videos. Two years later, when MusiquePlus went on the air, it also became a sponsor, as did MuchMoreMusic

when it launched in 1998. The launch of MuchMore (formerly known as MuchMoreMusic) also marked the

creation of PromoFACT, an Electronic Press Kit and website production fund for Canadian artists, independent

record labels and artist management companies.

MuchFACT is now funded entirely by MuchMusic and MuchMore (formerly MuchMoreMusic). Originally named

VideoFACT, the company changed its name to MuchFACT in September, 2009. Along with the name change,

MuchFACT expanded its PromoFACT EPK program to include not only traditional EPKs, but also digital music

videos, digital EPKs or other digital music related content intended for viral distribution.

The program offers three components: Scriptwriting Grants, Production Grants andResearch/Creation Grants.

To ensure the vitality and continued excellence of media arts, Canada Council for the Arts grants help support

individual Canadian artists committed to the practice of film and video in a film/video as independent artist-

controlled media art forms.

Only independent artworks are eligible to this program. This program does not support work created for the

cultural industries of commercial film and television. Independent means that the artist initiates and is the

driving force behind the proposed project. The artist must maintain complete creative and editorial control over

the work, ownership of the final work and receive a significant part of the revenues generated by the work.

A CALL FOR #NSFILMJOBS STORIES

http://us9.campaign-archive1.com/?u=990cca95e51513f19d25bf70c&id=5bd825fe9b

With the summer almost over, the Nova Scotia Legislature will be soon resuming for fall sessions. In advance ofthis, both the NDP and PC caucus are looking to keep the Nova Scotia film & television industry front and centreas they prepare for the fall session. To do this, they need YOUR help.

Both parties are in the process of gathering #NSFILMJOBS stories to share on the legislature floor. We areasking you to read their messages below, and then share with them the impact the changes to the Film TaxCredit (along with the loss of Film & Creative Industries Nova Scotia) has had on your livelihood and families. Please only send your story to one party – we are trying to avoid duplicates, as we want both parties to be ableto read different letters.

It's important to keep this issue in the spotlight as we continue to fight for the future of the industry, includingthe many significant problems the new film incentive program does not address, such as the loss of Film &Creative Industries NS, and the accompanying disappearance of equity funding and development programs.

Sincerely,
