1. About Department: Description of department, year of establishment. Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet, Hyderabad is established in the year 1971 and is affiliated to Osmania University, the college has 18 undergraduate programs.The courses offered in dept of zoology are Bzc. The restructured course in Biotechnology is introduced to the parent Department Zoology during the year 1999. This is in combination with Zoology and Chemistry as Bt.Z.C in English medium. In 2018 one new courses were added ie., MbZC. In 2019 new combinations have been introduced they are ANZC, CABZ, BTBZ, ANBZ

a. Vision of the Department: The vision is to introduce students to interesting career fields. Studying Zoology prepares you for a job working in either an educational institution or an industry in which you can be directly involved in the research and development of drugs, food-related items and biotechnology. Also, by studying biology you can become qualified to work for the government in managing such things as environmental research of animals, river systems or biological waste.

Lab Facilities Available: Our department has well equipped lab which enables students to perform various experiments and hands on experience to operate different instruments, like PH meter, Calorimeter, turbidity meter, electronic balance etc… We have many specimens which enable students to make detailed observations. We have an aquarium which is replica of artificial aquatic ecosystem. We have a museum with various specimens which give knowledge on evolution and for conservation of wild life. The museum collection are an important document of historical and present day patterns of biodiversity.

training academy, Gwalior. Also selected for participating in “EK Bharat Shresht Bharat “ camp

at Telangana state Police Academy.

2. D.Shravani,BZC Iyr , participated in state Yuvatarangam competition in Painting and stood

first place in cluster level competition academic year 18-19.

3. K. Gangamani BtZc IIyr, participated in state Yuvatarangam competition in Volley Ball and

stood 2nd in place for all the three years.

6. Events of Department: –

ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY 2019-20

1. Seminar on women safety was organized by My Choice foundation on 9th and 11th of July 2019.

2. Seminar on career guidance in medical coding was organized for final year students on 16th July by Valliappa foundation, Tech Mahindra.

3. Induction program for first year life science students was conducted on 23rd July. Eminent speaker Mr. M Nagaraju, retired Professor in English spoke about personality development.

4. Mosquito Day was celebrated on August 22nd . students went on a rally to govt. school, Begumpet to create awareness about diseases caused by mosquitoes and their prevention. On this occasion we conducted quiz program to students.

An outreach program to government high school begumpet to create awareness on mosquitoes and their dieseases.

5. Field trip to sericulture unit at shadnagar for III BZC & BTZC on 25th September.

ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY 2018-19 1. As a part of extension activities carried out for academic enhancement, the department of

Zoology and Biotechnology has carried out field trip to Institute of Genetics and Hospital for

genetic Diseases, Begumpet, Hyderabad on 12th September 2018. The field trip was carried out as an extension of classroom activity to bridge the gap between

book learning and hands on experience and also helped students to interact with what they are

learning.

2. Breast and Cervical Cancer day –Pink Ribbon Day (25-09-2018) Siddam Ngo have organized An awareness camp on breast and Cervical cancer by

Dr.D.SaiLaxmi Daayana, gynaecologist,.and lecture by Dr.Ashish chouhan , Diabetologist ,

from Apollo hospital, Jubliee hills.

The lecture also included causes and prevention of breast and cervical cancer and vaccination.

Food habits and risk of cancer.

3. EXTENSION LECTURE

On 29-9-2018 Department of Zoology and Biotechnology conducted Extension lecture by Mr.K.

Mahesh, Senior Scientist from Biological E Limited, Topic was Vaccine development and

molecular biology and immunology techniques used.

4. Animal Day celebration on 04-10-2018

Student were created awareness about endangered animals and Quiz was

conducted

5. Field trip to IICT As a part of extension activities carried out for academic enhancement, the

department of Zoology and Biotechnology has carried out field trip to Indian

Institute of chemical technology, Tarnaka, Hyderabad on 28th September 2018.

6. Department of Zoology and Biotechnology have celebrated “NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY” on 28th February 2019 by organizing “Avirbhav Science Fest - 2019”.

7. WORKSHOP ON MOLECULAR BIOLOGY TECHNIQUES

All the life Sciences of our college have Signed an Memorandum of

Understanding with Yuva Biotech Pvt Limited, Hyderabad.

Departments have organized a two day Work shop on Molecular Biology Techniques for II and III year B.Sc Students. On 13-02-2019 and 14-02-2019.

8. Department of Zoology has organised a field visit to Zoo on

14th march 2019 as part the acadamic ciruculum for

BZC,MZC,BtZC of Ist year.

ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY 2018-19

1. The Department of Zoology, Biotechnology, Botany, and Microbiology

celebrated “World Environment Day” on June 5th 2017.

2. The Department of Zoology and Biotechnology took an initiative to organize an

awareness programme on Mosquito Awareness Day (MAD) i.e. ‘Protect

Yourself from Mosquito Bites’ on 24-08-2017.

3. As a part of extension activities carried out for academic enhancement, the department

of Zoology and Biotechnology has carried out field trip to Institute of Genetics and

Hospital for genetic Diseases, Begumpet, Hyderabad on 21st November 2017.
