Last Meeting: Tennessee lost 27-24 at UCLA to open the 2008 season. The Vols failed to capitalize on multiple Bruin turnovers and dropped the game in overtime after Daniel Lincoln missed a 34-yard, game-tying field goal in the first extra frame. The Vols and Bruins last hooked up in Knoxville in 1996, a 35-20 UT victory. Neuheisel v. Kiffin: UT head coach Lane Kiffin and UCLA boss Rick Neuheisel have twice been on opposing sidelines. Southern California went 1-1 vs. Washington in 2001 and 2002 while Neuheisel was the head coach for the Huskies and Kiffin was a position coach at USC. The Trojans lost 27-24 at Washington in 2001 and won 41-21 at home a year later. Coaching Debuts: Lane Kiffin is Tennessee’s 21st head coach, and he became the 17th to win his inaugu- ral game vs. Western Kentucky on Sept. 5. Only seven UT coaches have started their careers 2-0, and prior to Phillip Fulmer doing so, no coach since Gen. Robert R. Neyland has started his inaugural campaign with two wins. On Sept. 12: Tennessee is 2-1 all-time on Sept. 12. The Vols have never played at home on this date. vs. the Pac-10: The Vols are 14-12-3 all-time vs. teams that now comprise the Pac-10 Conference. The contest marks the fourth UT vs. Pac-10 matchup in as many seasons. The Vols are 1-2 in those contests, los- ing at UCLA last season and at California in 2007 and winning at home vs. Cal in 2006. A win would: A victory over UCLA would give Ten- nessee a 2-0 start for the first time since 2006 and for the sixth time since 2000. A loss would: A loss to UCLA would make just the second occassion since the inception of the BCS that Tennessee has played a multiple-game series vs. a BCS conference opponent and not won at least one of the con- tests. BCS era major conference opponents include Cal (1-1), Notre Dame (2-0), Notre Dame again (0-2) and Miami (1-1). Vols Open Kiffin Era with Offense The first game of the Lane Kiffin era sent many fever- ishly thumbing through the history books to find the last time a Tennessee team produced as much offense. The Vols exploded for 657 yards of total offense and 380 rushing yards in their season opener vs. Western Kentucky. Tennessee has not had such a prolific day of- fensively since a 1997 contest at Kentucky (695 yards) and could not boast such rushing numbers since tallying 406 yards vs. Vanderbilt in 1994. Seven different Vols scored touchdowns and two of those seven scored two touchdowns. No Tennessee of- fense has spread the wealth to as many players since a 65-0 win at Vanderbilt in 1994 in which eight different Vols scored offensive touchdowns. Tennessee did put seven different players in the end zone vs. Louisana- Lafayette in 2007, but two of those scores were defen- sive touchdowns. The Vols, thanks in large part to their 657 yards of total offense, set a school record for largest discrepancy be- tween yards gained and yards allowed at 574. The UT defense allowed just 83 total yards to Western Kentucky. Tennessee's 63 points was the Vols' highest point total since Nov. 11, 2000, vs. Arkansas (63 points). The Vols scored 70 points on Sept. 23 of the same season vs. Louisiana-Monroe. True Freshmen Abound in Opener Tennessee sent 11 different members of its 2009 sign- ing class onto Shields-Watkins Field vs. Western Ken- tucky. Though wideout Marsalis Teague was the only true freshman to earn a start, 10 other first-year Vols made their UT debuts in backup roles. That group included wide receivers Nu’Keese Richard- son and Zach Rogers, running backs Bryce Brown and David Oku, defensive backs Darren Myles Jr., Janzen Jackson and Mike Edwards, linebackers Greg King and Nigel Mitchell-Thornton and defensive linemen Rae Sykes and Montori Hughes. The offensive players accounted for 154 rushing yards (40 percent of team total) and 137 receiving yards (49 percent of team total). Freshmen were also responsible for four of nine offensive touchdowns. On defense, true freshmen made six of 56 tackles but did not register a sack, TFL or interception. Tennessee has not played as many true freshmen in a season opener since the 2002 Wyoming game, when 11 newcomers also saw action. Hardesty Runs to Career DayEntering a season healthy for the first time in his Ten-

nessee career, senior running back Montario Hardestymade sure he had the No. 1 running back spot during fallcamp, emerging early on as the Vols top back. He madethe most of his first chance as the starter, setting careerhigh for rushing yards and longest rush.

Hardesty finished with 160 yards on 18 carries and onetouchdown. His previous career high was 78 yards on 16carries vs. Georgia in 2007. He eclipsed his previousmark on just nine carries and less than 20 minutes intothe game.

His third quarter touchdown came on a 43-yard run, which tied for his career long run as well.

The New Bern, N.C., native rushed for 1,046 yards inhis first three seasons and worked primarily as a goal-line back in 2008, scoring six touchdowns.

Crompton Tosses Five TDsLane Kiffin named Jonathan Crompton his starting

quarterback three weeks into fall camp, and the seniorfrom Waynesville, N.C., got his second season as thestarter off to a good start.

He threw for 233 yards on 21-of-28 passing and con-nected on five touchdown passes. The 21 completionsand five scores were career highs. He threw only fourtouchdowns in all of the 2008 season. Tennesse’s schoolrecord for passing touchdowns is seven, set by Erik Aingein 2007 at Kentucky.

Crompton has played under four different offensive co-ordinators in his five seasons on Rocky Top, performinghis best under David Cutcliffe in a brief stint in place of aninjured Ainge in 2006.

Sullins Brothers Living DreamTennessee offensive linemen Cody and Cory Sullins

have seen their lives take similar paths. To begin with, they look exactly alike. Both began their UT careers aswalk-ons and eventually earned scholarships from for-mer UT head coach Phillip Fulmer. Now, both have takenthe next step and earned their way into the playing rota-tion on the offensive line.

Cody is the Vols’ center, and made his first career startvs. WKU in the season opener. Cory is the backup to bothhis brother and right guard Vladimir Richard, who hespelled regularly in the WKU game because of an injury.

The two brothers grew up in Cottontown, Tenn., andwere Tennessee fans throughout their childhood. Theyare the fourth set of identical twins to play at Tennessee(Jim/Mike Mondelli-1966-68, Rob/Ron Frere-1970-72,Reggie/Raleigh McKenzie-1981-84).

Offensive Line Returns Three StartersTennessee has an experienced starter returning three

of the five offensive line positions. In all, the three re-turning lettermen have combined for 45 starts and areled by senior Chris Scott’s 27-game start streak. CodySullins and Jarrod Shaw both made their first careerstarts in the Western Kentucky game.

Vols Appear Fine at WRInjuries to two of Tennessee’s top returning wide re-

ceivers (Gerald Jones-ankle and Austin Rogers-knee) leftthe UT receiving corps with several question marks en-tering the season opener, but senior Quintin Hancock andfreshman Marsalis Teague more than picked up the slack.

Hancock set a career high for receiving yards with 65and tied a career high for receptions with five. Teague ledall receivers in his first collegiate game with six catchesfor 86 yards and a touchdown. Hancock also scored atouchdown along with Brandon Warren, who was play-ing his first game at wideout after playing last season asa tight end and at Florida State in 2006.

Ten different Vols caught passes in the season opener, including six wide receivers.

Brown, Oku As Advertised in OpenerRunning back Bryce Brown, the first No. 1 ranked

player ever to sign with Tennessee, demonstrated vs.Western Kentucky exactly why he brought with him suchlofty expectations.

The true freshman carried 11 times for 104 yards andscored a touchdown in his Tennessee debut. He becamethe first freshman tailback since Lennon Creer in 2007(Louisiana-Lafayette) to rush for 100 yards in a game.

Tennessee’s other freshman ball-carrier, David Oku,didn’t disappoint vs. WKU, carrying eight times for 42yards and scoring two touchdowns.

Freshmen Add Big-Play PotentialThe Tennessee offense produced just 34 offensive

plays of longer than 20 yards last season, which aver-aged to less than three per game. Players who returnedfor 2009 were responsible for just 17 of those plays, andinjured wideout Gerald Jones accounted for seven ofthose. Three UT true freshmen got right to work on theproblem vs. WKU.

Notes on the Defense/Special Teams

Kiffin’s Defense Strong in Opening GameThe UT defense finished the 2008 campaign as one of

the best in the country. In the final 2008 NCAA statistics, the Vols finished tied for third in total defense (263.50yards per game), fourth in pass defense (160.42 ypg),12th in rushing defense (103.1 ypg) and 10th in scoringdefense (16.8 ppg).

Among Southeastern Conference schools, Tennesseewas tied for first with Alabama in total defense, first inpass defense, third in rushing defense and third in scor-ing defense.

The 2009 Vols return just five full-time starters, but theyhave added one of the top defensive coordinators in all offootball in Monte Kiffin, who comes to Knoxville to coachwith his son after 26 seasons in the NFL.

In his first game as coordinator, Kiffin’s defense put upsome very stout numbers, allowing 83 yards of total of-fense and posting 12 tackles for loss and five sacks.

WKU’s 34 rushing yards were the fewest since UT al-lowed Vanderbilt just 25 yards in 2008. WKU’s 49 pass-ing yards were the fewest allowed by UT since SouthCarolina threw for just 45 yards in 2002. Tennessee hadnot held an opponent to fewer than 100 total yards sinceArkansas gained just 92 yards in 2001.

Tennessee held the Hilltoppers without an offensivefirst down for the entire opening half. WKU only movedthe chains once, and that came on a roughing the passerpenalty by UT defensive tackle Dan Williams.

The Hilltoppers managed just nine yards of total of-fense and lost a total of 16 yards rushing in the first half.WKU did not gain a first down by way of an offensive playuntil the 5:58 mark of the third quarter.

Experience Makes Safety a StrengthAll-America safety Eric Berry is the unquestioned star

of the UT secondary, and he has a mixed bag of experi-ence and youth around him. The Vols return one otherstarter in Dennis Rogan and several experienced back-ups from the 2008 unit that helped Tennessee finishfourth in the nation in pass defense and tied for 20th in in-terceptions. Rogan has moved to free safety after start-ing 10 games at right corner last season.

Marsalous Johnson also returns with three years ex-perience and nine career starts to play at the left cornerposition or in the nickel package. Brent Vinson, a starterin 2007, also returns.

Three other Vols are seeing their first significant play-ing time: corners Art Evans and Anthony Anderson alongwith safety Prentiss Waggner. Three newcomers to alsosee action are corner Mike Edwards and safeties DarrenMyles Jr. and Janzen Jackson.

Reveiz Key after Walk-On Beginning Senior linebacker Nick Reveiz shares with the Sullins

brothers on the other side of the ball the experience of ajourney from walk-on to starter. Reveiz made his trip in ashorter span, playing as a backup and on special teamsin 2007 and 2008 before becoming the starter at middlelinebacker in 2009.

The senior from Farragut, Tenn., tied for the team leadwith six tackles vs. Western Kentucky after never makingmore than four stops in a game in his career.

Defensive Line Dominant vs. WKUThe defensive line was expected to be somewhat of a

question mark entering the 2009 season, but if the unit’sperformance vs. Western Kentucky can be duplicatedthroughout the season, the Vols will be among the na-tional leaders in sacks and tackles for loss.

Cunningham Takes Over Punting DutiesFor the first time since 2000, Tennessee entered a foot-

ball season without a Colquitt on the roster and handlingthe punting duties. Replacing the departed BrittonColquitt in 2009 is Chad Cunningham, who handled thepunting duties for five games in 2008 while Colquittserved a suspension.

The only issue for Cunningham was that he wasn’teven needed in the 2009 season opener. The Vols didn’thave to punt in a game for the first time since the 2006contest with Air Force.

Head Coach Lane Kiffin

Primed to SucceedLane Kiffin has the pedigree and the experience

necessary to succeed at the highest level of collegefootball. He is the son of the finest defensive coordi-nator in the game, Monte Kiffin, and has studiedunder the likes of Tom Coughlin, Dom Capers, JeffTedford and Pete Carroll.

In six seasons as a full-time college coach, Kif-fin’s teams have amassed a 65-12 record, made fiveBCS bowl appearances and won two national cham-pionships.

A Great Offensive MindKiffin is at the helm of a college program for the first time, but with his legendary fa-

ther monitoring the defense and his own track record of offensive success, very little islikely to slip through the cracks when it comes to X’s and O’s.

During his three seasons as a coordinator at Southern California, Kiffin-led offensesproduced record numbers. In 2004, Kiffin’s passing game produced a 3,300-yard passer, three 500-yard receivers and 34 touchdowns through the air. In 2005, Kiffin’s offensewas among the national elite in total offense, scoring offense, rushing, passing andpassing efficiency. In 2006, he coordinated an offense that ranked in the top six na-tionally in every offensive category. The Trojans scored 50 points a school-record seventimes that season, finished first in the Pac-10 in passing efficiency and produced two1,000-yard receivers and a 3,000-yard passer.

With the Oakland Raiders in 2007, Kiffin improved scoring by more than a touch-down and presided over a rushing offense that ranked sixth in the league.

A Builder of Star PlayersThe list of names by itself would be enough. It reads as a who’s who of college foot-

ball stars and early-round NFL Draft picks. Lane Kiffin has coached three Heisman Tro-phy winners (Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush) and NFL Draft picks MattCassell, Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith, LenDale White, Mike Williams and Keary Colbert.

In 2006, Leinart threw for 3,322 yards passing and 33 touchdowns. In 2005, Kiffintutored Bush to 1,740 yards on 200 carries and 16 touchdowns. In 2002, Palmer threwfor school-record marks of 3,942 yards and 33 touchdowns while also setting a schoolrecord for completions with 309.

In the NFL, Kiffin worked several other great players including Darren McFadden andJaMarcus Russell, both of whom came to the NFL from the Southeastern Conference.

A Five-Star RecruiterKiffin had only two months as head coach to put together his 2009 signing class,

and he had a full coaching staff to help him for only the last three weeks before NationalSigning Day. Nonetheless, Kiffin and his staff assembled one of the nation’s top classes,a group ranked in the top 10 in the country by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Tennessee signed 23 prospective student-athletes, including two who earned a five-star rating from one of the two recruiting services and 13 who were rated as four-starprospects.

One of the five-star prospects, running back Bryce Brown was considered the No. 1prospect in the nation by multiple recruiting publications, making him the highest-ratedprospect ever to sign with Tennessee. Of the 19 prospects who signed on or after Feb.4, 18 qualified academically to enroll at Tennessee and play the 2009 season.

As recruiting coordinator at Southern California in 2005-06, Kiffin signed the nation’stop-ranked class both years, helping the Trojans dominate in the Pac-10 and nationally.

The Youngest Head Coach in FBS FootballKiffin was the NFL’s youngest-ever head coach when he took over the Oakland

Raiders in 2007, and two seasons later he is youngest head coach in major collegefootball. Kiffin was 34 years and four months old when the Vols kicked off vs. WesternKentucky on Sept. 5. He is just less than seven months younger than Northwestern’sPat Fitzgerald. Kiffin is one of only six coaches in the FBS who will coach the 2009 sea-son under 40 years of age and one of only four who will do so in a BCS conference.

Vols, Bruins Continue Historic SeriesTennessee’s series renewal with UCLA this Saturday

marks the 15th meeting between these nearly transcon-tinental foes over the last 45 years.

The Vols and Bruins first played in 1965’s “Rosebon-net Bowl” in Memphis. Former Vols play-by-play an-nouncer George Mooney is credited with that monikerbecause Tennessee already was committed to play in theBluebonnet Bowl and UCLA was headed for the RoseBowl.

And as hyped as the contest was, it more than lived upto billing with five lead changes en route to a 37-34 Volsvictory. It still is considered one of Liberty Bowl Stadium’smost memorable games.

Condredge Holloway’s heroics helped UT to a 17-17result in 1974, and UCLA quarterback David Norrie cameoff the bench to rally the Bruins to a 26-26 outcome in1985.

Of interest to that game 24 years ago was that bothteams went on to league titles, major bowl victories andtop-10 finishes by season’s end. Tennessee captured theSEC and Sugar Bowl trophies and finished No. 4 nation-ally, while UCLA was victorious in the Pac-10 and RoseBowl and garnered a No. 7 ranking.

Tennessee used early-season victories at UCLA topropel it to conference championships in 1989 (24-6) and1997 (30-24). Sandwiched between those two wins wasa 25-23 Bruins victory in 1994 that saw the playing debutof freshman Peyton Manning. Also of note that eveningwas the play of current Colorado Rockies star Todd Hel-ton, who nearly quarterbacked UT from an 18-0, fourth-quarter deficit.

UT in the NFL

NFL Pipeline: Tennessee has 35 active players onNFL Training Camp rosters.

Tennessee in the NFL Draft: Ten former Vols havebeen selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since2000. In the history of the draft, seven times more thanone UT player has been selected in the first round. TheVols lead the SEC with 39 all-time first-round picks andhave had one in each of the last two seasons (RobertAyers - 2009 and Jerod Mayo - 2008).

Super Bowl Vols: Tennessee has had a represen-tative in 20 of the last 22 Super Bowls. A total of 48 for-mer Vols have played in the big game and 18 havedone so since 2000.

Vols in the Pro Bowl: Former Vols AlbertHaynesworth, Peyton Manning and Jason Wittenearned 2009 Pro Bowl invitations. Thirty-four former UTathletes have received 102 all-time invitations.

Atkins, White Enshrined in Canton: Legendarydefensive linemen Doug Atkins (1950-52) and ReggieWhite (1980-83) represent UT in the Pro Football Hallof Fame. Atkins starred for the Chicago Bears (1955-66) and the New Orleans Saints (1967-69). White is re-membered as one of the best pass rushers in NFLhistory. Vlad the Extoller - Volunteer ChefSenior offensive guard Vladimir Richard is back thisseason to wax philosophic on current events. In thisweek’s issue, Vlad the Extoller discusses the residentculinary master on UT’s roster: junior defensive endGerald Williams.

“When he gets in the kitchen, it’s just like when we turnon the lights and walk into the stadium. He’s focused.I’m telling you, he makes some of the best meals. “He gets in there and we might not have everything, youknow, as college students. We’ll have some meat hereor something there. A lot of people probably wouldn’tthink it all goes together, but this guy will put it all to-gether and get it on a plate.“He gets in the kitchen and I ask him what he’s doing. He says, ‘Don’t rush me. Let me do my thing and stayover there and watch TV. When it’s all done, then talk tome.’ He gets upset at me at times because I want toknow what he’s cooking. My stomach’s growling; I’mhungry. He sometimes gets upset because I’m so curi-ous, and I have to respect that.”Because The Extoller feels a certain responsibility to hisreadership, he reveals an insight into Williams’ cookingmethods.“Let me tell you a secret: this guy hums. He likes tosing in the kitchen. He probably doesn’t want me to tell, but I have to tell the fans because they need to know. Ithelps gets his mind focused on cooking and lets him dohis thing. This guy, he’s got one of those ‘preachervoices.’ He just does what he do, and I eat it and enjoyit.”

The Recipe for SuccessDefensive end Gerald Williams is a heavily guardedvault when it comes to his recipes. His secret for suc-cess in the kitchen must remain just that: a secret.“Let me say this though: the ‘beanies and weenies’aren’t just ‘beanies and weenies.’ I have my own specialingredients.”Williams cooks to the game plan of “prepare it like you’dlike it.” Though he says he usually steers clear of eatingmushrooms, he makes baked mushroom chicken thateven he enjoys. The Extoller can testify that it is one ofthe best dishes on Williams’ home menu.“It’s all about coordinating, whatever you’ve got,”Williams says. The art of cooking was passed down to Williams in thenormal way; he learned from his mother and grand-mother. He remembers at a very young age wanting tohelp out in the kitchen in any way possible. As he grewolder, he realized that being able to fix food for himselfwas an important part of becoming independent.“That’s when I took it upon myself to start easing into

the kitchen, asking my momma if I can do a little of thisand a little of that. Then I got a feel for it myself andstarted doing my own things. It’s all from the heart.”

Neyland Gets New LookFor the third season in a row, Volunteer fans who en-

tered Neyland Stadium for the 2009 season saw an im-proved facility.

This season, fans noticed renovation of the top levelconcourse of the west lower sideline, removal of the scis-sor ramps leading to the west upper deck, the additionof elevators and stairwells on the west side, improve-ments to the west tower sky boxes and press center andthe construction of the West Club section.

Upgrades scheduled for completion by the beginning ofthe 2010 season include a plaza outside Gate 21, a ren-ovated lower northeast concourse, a brick and wroughtiron facade along the north and west sides of the sta-dium, a statue of Gen. Neyland on the west side and theTennessee Terrace along the west upper deck.

SEC Signs Deals With CBS, ESPNThe Southeastern Conference recently signed a 15-

year deal with ESPN to televise sporting events, includ-ing football and men's and women's basketball.

The agreement announced in August is the longestESPN has ever signed and matches the length of thepowerhouse league’s deal with CBS earlier in the month.

ESPN’s various outlets will carry more than 5,500 SECevents over the 15-year period, including league cham-pionships in women's basketball, baseball, softball andgymnastics.

CBS will carry a football game of the week along withprime-time games and doubleheaders. The CBS agree-ment also covers other platforms, including certain digi-tal and Internet rights.

New Rules for 2009 Uniform Colors: Teams can now both wear coloredjerseys as long as the home team agrees and the hometeam's conference agrees that the colors are sufficientlycontrasting.

Helmet to Helmet: Conferences will review video ofcertain plays deemed dangerous due to helmet contactand, if necessary, impose further punishment. If a playeris ejected, the review is required.

Punter Protection: Punters will lose special protec-tion if they run outside of the tackle box before kickingthe ball. This will apply to rugby-style punters, who willlose protection from roughing and running-into-the-kickercalls if they are more than 5 yards from either side ofwhere the ball was snapped.

Illegal Formations: The offensive formation rule nowlimits backfield players to four, thus eliminating illegal-for-mation penalties if only 10 men are on the field. Previ-ously, the rule was written to require seven players onthe line of scrimmage.

Untimed Downs: End-of-quarter penalties won't causean extra play if the infraction results in a loss of down.

Notes on the VolunteersSpeaking Volumes

"Every day I am around him I am more amazed. Weare not talking about a redshirt, 5th-year senior. He isa third-year player in a new system. Every day it'ssomething new and he picks it up so quickly.”

~ Monte Kiffin on Eric Berry

"I want to be one of the best backs in the SEC. I don'tbelieve I've shown what I can do yet. I want to be thatkind of back, and that's what drives me to come outhere and go as hard as I can everyday."

~ RB Montario Hardesty

~ Lane Kiffin on Tennessee’s freshmen wide receivers

~ LB Nick Reveiz on being named a team captain

“I put a lot of pressure on myself, which a lot of peopledon't understand. I go in every offseason like I'm an in-coming freshman trying to regain my spot. I'm alwaysworking and trying to get things done. I'll let those otherguys deal with all the Heisman campaign and every-thing like that. I just deal with what I can deal with."

~ S Eric Berry on the pressure of being a high-profile player

"I'm having a blast. This isn't just about being with mykid. I know the kid pretty good. I didn't come here toget to know the head coach. I've known him for 34years.”

"His smile today when I told him going into that last pe-riod when I just found out during the break, he put hisarm around me. It was pretty neat to see. He was prettyexcited."

He made19-of-22 field goal attempts last season and wasnamed third team All-American by the AP. He hasseven career 50-yard field goals, including a 50-yarderagainst the Aztecs last Saturday.
