What is a Magnet Program?• An educational Program of Choice with a specialized

course of study or an emphasis on instruction that is different from the traditional curriculum offered in Anne Arundel County (for example, engineering, the arts, or healthcare)

What do Magnet Programs offer?• Rigorous, student-centered environments that give

students the chance to learn with others who are passionate about the same topics

• Environments in which students can apply theory and knowledge towards skills proficiency with hands-on, real world experiences

• Interdisciplinary approaches to curriculum that pro-mote critical thinking and effective communication

How do Magnet Programs prepare students for future success?Magnet Programs offer students:• The opportunity to follow and engage with

professionals from their fields • Necessary career skill development, such as resume

writing, interviewing, and professional ethics specific to the field of the program

• College visits, job shadows, internship opportunities, or field experience that help students decide their next steps after graduation

Who can attend a Magnet Program?Middle and high school students must reside in Anne Arundel County, complete an application, and be determined eligible for a Magnet Program

Where do Magnet students attend school?Students attend their Magnet school in place of their home school (Exception: CAT students attend one of the Centers as a part of their regular school day) Transportation is provided from consolidated bus stops. It is the family’s responsibility to provide transportation from the home to the bus stop.

Middle School Magnet Programs

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP)for students interested in learning and who enjoy thinking outside of the box and problem-solving

Location: Annapolis & MacArthur Middle Schools & Old Mill Middle North

Students apply in grade 5

Performing Visual Arts (PVA)for students interested in fostering their maximum potential both artistically and academically

Location: Bates & Brooklyn Park Middle Schools

Students apply in grade 5

Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) for the students interested in exploring the diverse STEM subjects in their everyday life

Location: Central and Lindale Middle Schools and Old Mill Middle South

Students apply in grade 5

High School Magnet Programs

STEM/Biomedical & Allied Health (BMAH)for students interested in exploring real-world opportunities across the spectrum of healthcare professions

Location: Glen Burnie High SchoolStudents apply in grade 8

Centers of Applied Technology (CAT)for students interested in developing technical skills needed to be marketable in the competitive workplace

Location: CAT North & CAT SouthStudents apply in grades 9 and 10

Performing Visual Arts (PVA)for students interested in developing their full artistic potential as they prepare for post-secondary academic and career success in the arts

Location: Annapolis & Broadneck High Schools

Students apply in grade 8

IB Middle Years /Diploma Programme (IB MYP/DP)for students committed to their education who aspire to become visionary 21st century global leaders

Location: Annapolis, Meade, & Old Mill High Schools

Students apply in grades 8 and 10

Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM)for the students interested in rigorous, hands-on, real-world experience in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields

Location: North County & South River High Schools

Students apply in grade 8

How can parents prepare their child to succeed in a Magnet Program? • Encourage your child before grade 5 or 8

to create good study habits; set aside a quiet area for study

• Talk to your school counselor about Programs of Choice and your child’s involvement

• Ask the teachers about your child’s aptitude, interest, and/or aspirations to support school decisions/Magnet considerations

How can teachers encourage students to apply for and succeed in a Magnet Program?• Look for signs of interest in Science and math

(BMAH, STEM, and IB)• Look for artistic ability in music, art, writing, and

theater (PVA/IB)• Collaborate with other content teachers and the school

counselor on behalf of the students’ aptitudes, interests, and aspirations to maximize student/family consider-ations of Magnet Programs

• Offer to support parents with the Magnet application process for their child
