Kia ora whānau We are well into the swing of things and I am happy to report that your children are wonderfully settled and happy at school after the shake over the weekend. It was pleasure to be at the front gate greeting the smiling faces on Monday morning. It was of a concern to observe the families with unsafe and risky parking habits as well as a large number of parents who think it is OK to cross the road anywhere, even with their child/ren. We provide a manned road patrol to safely cross you and your children. Children copy parent behaviour so please be a good role model and cross your child safely, keep the speed down when driving and park your vehicle in a safe, courteous and considered manner. We receive several phone calls a year from our community, letting us know of unsafe practices they see when they are passing. We love it that children are keen to be at school, but there is a growing number of children arriving well before 8:30am and some even before 8:00am. Please note that school opens at 8:30am and as teachers have morning meetings there is no supervision before this time. It would be helpful to us if you could maybe try and curb this enthusiasm for school for a few extra minutes in the morning J On Monday (22 February) we have planned a short memorial service to commemorate the earthquake of 2011. We will be joining with Our Lady of the Assumption School at the memorial tree that is planted on the border of our two schools .The ceremony begins at 12:40pm and will be approximately 10 minutes long. Please feel free to come along and join us. Please note that Rooms 14 and 21 will be out of the school this day. A reminder to you all that the PTA are holding their AGM on Wednesday 2 March from 7pm. We would encourage you to come along and get involved. Have a fabulous weekend. Ngā mihi nui

Legends Swim Sports A fantastic morning was held at Jellie Park Pool for the Legends Swimming Sports on Thursday. For many children this was their first ever swimming competition. It was great to see all children giving it a go and competing to the best of their ability. Children competed in width races, 25m and 50m events. I was so impressed with the support the children showed for each other -‐ awesome enthusiastic noise vibrated around the pool. Children earned house points for competing and extra points for being placed in the top 3 positions in each race. The house relays were very competitive and included a surprise team entry consisting of teachers and parents. All teams worked hard battling it out stroke for stroke. The teacher/parent team placed 1st at the pool, but were later disqualified for illegal tactics once video footage was reviewed. This moved Worsley into relay honours in 1st place collecting the winning ribbons, followed by Sparks 2nd Cracroft 3rd and Heathcote 4th. Overall House Points collated for the day gives Cracroft the win for Legends Swimming 2016. 1st -‐ 7250 pts, Cracroft 2nd -‐ 6850 pts, Worsley 3rd -‐ 6300pts, Heathcote 4th -‐ 6000pts, Sparks A big thank-‐you to the parents and teachers who helped at the pool on the day and the spectators who came down and cheered the children on. All children can be very proud of their results. Photos can be viewed on our sports page on the school website. Six ways to help….. from The WorryBug
Six ways to help Canterbury children worried about earthquakes: 1. Retain routines; do what you normally do. 2. Turn media off, repetition of disaster scenes adds to anxiety. 3. Be calm and loving; and don’t talk about your adult worries with your children. 4. Keep normal disciplinary boundaries – the world is unpredictable enough without
the rules changing. 5. Give reassurance but don’t overdo it. Too much reassurance means there is
something to be worried about! 6. Let them talk about it, but don’t let it take over, use distraction and play to
get their minds off it. For more information visit http://www.theworrybug.co.nz Sport
