Introduction

Satan here takes Jesus to a high mountain to tempt him to sin & Jesus overcomes.

5

How did Jesus handle this temptation during his trial on the high mountain?

6

Matthew 4:8-108 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘ You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’”

1. Jesus on the High Mountain: Matthew 4:88 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;

10

Luke 4:55 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

11

The high mountains in the bible is usually associated with the a place of encounter with God

Exodus 24:1212 Now the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and remain there, and I will give you the stone tablets with the law and the commandment which I have written for their instruction.”(Read also 1 Kings 19:8)

12

13

Satan uses this high mountain to tempt Jesus by showing Him the kingdoms of the world & their splendour.

14

This was in reference to God’s judgment on Satan in Ezekiel 28 where Satan is cast down

Ezekiel 28:1616 “By the abundance of your trade, you were internally filled with violence, and you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

15

16

2. Third Temptation: “Worship Me” 2.1 Ruler of the World

Matthew 4:9 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give you, if you fall down and worship me.”

Luke 4:66 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

17

The devil claims to hold the authority over the kingdoms of the world.

Does he really have authority or is a deception? Psalm 24:11 The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.(Read also 1 Corinthians 10:26)

18

John 12:31 (Read also 2 Corinthians 4:4 & 1 John 4:4)31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

19

20

Genesis 1:2828 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over…over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

2.2 The Devil’s Desire to be Worshipped Matthew 4:9 9 …he said to Him, “All these things I will give you, if you fall down and worship me.”

23

Ezekiel 28:22 “Son of man, say to the leader of Tyre, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Because your heart is lifted up and you have said, ‘I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the seas’; Yet you are a man and not God,Although you make your heart like the heart of God

The devil desires to be worshipped as God

Thus we are tempted by Him to worship him.

24

25

1 John 2:15-1615 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

3. Jesus’ Response:

3.1 Jesus Rebukes Satan Matthew 4:1010 Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan!...(Read Matthew 16:23)

Jesus responds by rebuking Satan to depart for seeking to be worshipped as God.

33

34

35

3.2 Worship & Serve God Alone Matthew 4:1010 …For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’”

Deuteronomy 6:1313 You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.

Jesus counters Satan and reiterates that God is the only one to be worshipped and served.

36

37

Conclusion: Jesus refuses overcomes the desire for the world

and becomes victorious in God
