It’s really cool to create a scene like this one with multiple parts, where each piece is a fun project all in itself! We combined Perler beads with a painted backdrop and surface, adding some real sand and loose beads for extra effect. You can do as much or as little of that as you want —it’s up to you.

Since this Surf City project has a lot of fun stuff going on (did you notice the shark’s fin?), we're going to break it down into smaller sections to make it easier to follow. Have fun!

Part 1 is to create the water and the beach. When you are done with Part 1, this is what it will look like: grass, beach, tiki torches, water, and curling waves.

The diagrams at right show how the design fits on the joined pegboards. The charts for each square are shown at full size on the following pages.

1. Place your pegboard on a flat, heat-safe surface.

2. Set a household iron to the medium setting. Place ironing paper over the pegboard. In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. Do not press down with the iron. As the beads begin to fuse, you will see circles of the beads start to show through the paper. When ironed properly, the beads will still have an open center. Let the design cool.

3. Remove the paper and bead design from the peg board. Flip the design over to expose the non-fused side. Repeat step two. Let cool completely.

NOTE: Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly. Lift the paper occasionally to see how the beads are fusing. Depending on the size of the

project, additional heating time may be required. DO NOT OVER-IRON the beads as it will make the centers of the beads close and can make the assembly you do with your project more challenging.

Assembly

Building the beach and waves: Hold the waves section

at a right angle to the water/beach section, aligning right

sides. Use three twist ties to connect the sections as shown,

working through the bead openings. Carefully tighten until

the sections are fitted snugly together.

Bend the ends of the twist ties to the

back and bottom to secure, then trim.

“Oh, no! I broke a bead off!”

No problem—put the section back on

the pegboard, replace the missing bead, and carefully

iron just that area to fuse the new bead in place.

Making tiki torches: Completely straighten one length

of a twist tie. Slide on 8 tan beads, 3 light brown

beads, 1 orange bead, and 1 yellow bead in that order,

working from bottom to top as shown. Leave a little

space at both ends.

Bend the twist tie over the yellow bead at the top and

trim to about 1/4 inch. Insert the bottom

end of your tiki torch through the beach

section of the base, bend to the back and

trim to about 1/2 inch. Repeat for the other

four torches, spacing them as desired.

Surf City, Part 2: Palm Trees

We’re going to add some tropical feel to our beach with a couple 3-D palm trees, complete with coconuts, a parrot, and some colorful flowers.

Does it look tough? Well, it’s not! You’ll be surprised at how easily these go together. Get ready for some fun, and have some friends and family join in!

You will need 4 twist ties to do the assembly of the palm trees.

The diagrams at right show how the design fits on the joined pegboards. The charts

for each square are shown at full size on the following pages.

The palm tree sections are worked across two connected large square pegboards. For Palm Tree #1, there are 4 patterns. You will work patterns A and B together, and then C and D together. For Palm Tree #2, there are 3 patterns. You will work patterns E and F together, then G alone.

Next stop in Surf City—Part 3, The Tiki Hut!

Assembly

After ironing all of the individual parts of your palm trees, turn the two main trunk sections at right angles to each other, align the slots, and slide them together.

Near the top of the trunk, secure the trunk sections together with a twist tie. Trim.

Assemble the coconuts by turning the two pieces at right angles to each other, aligning the slots, and sliding them together.

Using twist ties, attach two coconuts to each tree. Trim excess twist tie.

Position the parrot. Later on, we’ll add a few “fallen” coconuts.

Add the extra palm leaves piece by turning it at right

angles to the tree, and slide its slot onto the top of the tree.

NOTE: Both trees are assembled in a similar fashion.

Need a place for the surfer dude and his girl to get out of the sun and sip a cool drink? Then you have to make a tiki hut!

You will need twist ties to complete this part of the project.

Next up in Surf City—Part 4, Surfer Girl!

AssemblyUse twist ties to secure the four sides of the roof together.

Insert twist ties through the beads indicated at the four corners of the tiki hut floor (see the diagram at far right for placement).

Next, slide 12 light brown beads onto each twist tie above the floor and 2 below the floor. Bend the ends of the twist ties below the feet to hold them in place. Leave extra twist tie at the top of each post to attach the roof.

To add a tropical drink to the tiki hut, insert a short length of twist tie through the floor of the hut and bend the bottom end to hold it in place. Slide three beads in your choice of color onto the twist tie. Bend thetwist tie at an angle to look like a straw.

Perch the parrot on the roof to complete the project.

Using the excess twist tie described above, lower the roof onto the posts and secure. Trim excess twist tie.

Susie Surfer is a quick project with just two pieces! All you need is one short piece of twist tie to assemble her, and she’s ready to hit the waves.

Assembly Carefully insert a twist tie through a

bead on the kneeling leg and

through the beads at the desired position

on the surfboard. Draw together and

bend the ends of the twist tie under the

surfboard. Trim the twist tie as

needed.

With his arms and legs assembled with twist ties, the Surfer Dude has the flexibility to be posed any way you want on his surfboard. Let’s go hang ten!

Assembly

Assemble both arms like this: insert 1/2" of a twist tie through a bead

at a shoulder. Bend it over, then slide 6 peach beads

down the length of the twist tie, covering the bent end of

the twist tie with the first bead. Bend the twist tie over

the last bead and trim.

Assemble the legs in a similar fashion, using slightly longer pieces of twist tie to connect through the heel of the foot and through the surf board at the desired point. Snug the surfer down to the surfboard, then bend the ends of the twist tie under the board to finish.

Assembly

Use short lengths of twist ties and work through the bead holes to secure the two pieces of the radio together. Bend the ends of the twist ties at the back to finish. If you prefer, you can use craft glue to adhere the pieces to each other.

This one’s easy! Just slide the fin of the surf board into the slot on the body of the surf board.

Use a short length of twist tie to work through one of the beads at the base of the fin, then through the "floor" of the water next to the rising waves. Bend the ends of the twist tie under the water to secure.

You did these before when you made the palm trees—just turn the two pieces at right angles to each other, align the slots, and slide together.
