SONJA MARTIN

“God never shuts one door without opening another…..” A quote I’ve heard since I was a little girl and oh so true it is!! One particular “closed

door” on my life is one which has shaped and transformed my outlook on this

quote and it is how I came to be a part of this church. When my husband and I got engaged, we were both living in Georgia interning for a church youth group.

I was leading youth worship and Derrick was leading the drama department. We

were comfortable there but decided through much prayer, to move in with my parents to plan our wedding. Derrick got to move into my little sister’s old HOT

PINK bedroom. (Funny Insert) Our initial plan was to stay there only until we

were married and move up north or possibly to Amsterdam. You see, we had

open doors in both places. Derrick had previous connections with a church in

Amsterdam who wanted him to take the youth pastor position. He had several invitations to work at a Master’s Commission Program in MN. I was excited for

either….I just wanted to get out of TN! As our wedding came closer and closer, we started realizing that both doors were slowly closing. The program

opportunity came to a halt and the Amsterdam plan; though the door was and

still is open on their end, had been temporarily shut on our end. It was discouraging for the both of us. I left TN for the sole purpose of staying

gone….I wanted to venture out and travel to new places; it was my heart’s desire

to lead worship and youth pastor alongside my husband, but God brought me back to TN!! THE HOLE!! All this time, we had been trying to work our way up

in the ministry; being servants and patiently learning how to do Youth Ministry. There were open doors to step through into that calling and the doors shut…..at

the same time!! God was wrecking our plan!!

While we were still in the planning process of the wedding, we had

gotten involved with The Tabernacle and began helping Pastor G and Barbara

with the Youth Ministry. During that time, there wasn’t even talk of the new

campus. God had already begun opening a door and we were unaware. He was

teaching us to be humble servants while He was training us to be Youth Pastors

and myself the Worship Pastor at CC. I am so glad that we stuck it out when it

was hard. I’m blessed to be a part of this church family. I have learned so much

and have yet to learn. I feel I am a stronger leader from this. God not only

opened a door but He promoted me to my calling. I don’t always understand all

of His ways and reasoning, but I know and have faith that though many doors

will shut on me throughout my lifetime, He’s got another one opening

somewhere else. If I only trust him, He will give me my heart’s desire.
