What is AIPPI? (Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriete Intellectuelle)

– 9000 Members representing more than 100 countries

– Headquartered in Switzerland

– Dates back to 1897

– Main function is to study and adopt Resolutions of comparative law (in four languages (English, French, German and Spanish)

– which are supplied to WIPO, WTO and national patent and trade mark offices around the world

Goals and Function of AIPPI-US Division

• AIPPI-US Division is the US national group– Represents the US within the international federation of

AIPPI national groups

• Prepares Reports on upcoming resolutions (“Working Questions”) being studied by AIPPI each year

• Provides opportunities for members to network with international companies and practitioners

• Monthly Steering Committee Calls• Two Hour Session in Seattle at Spring Meeting

– AIPPI Bureau will attend and speak on AIPPI Activities– Review of U.S. Reports on 4 Working Questions for

Helsinki Meeting (September 5-11, 2013)– Plan Asia Pacific Subcommittee trip to Korea, Japan,

China for November, 2013

• Attend Sept. Forum and Exco Meeting in Helsinki• Hold Annual Meeting during AIPLA AM in DC

Working Questions for 2013

• Q233 Grace period for patents• Q234 Recognition of famous marks• Q235 Term of copyright protection• Q236 Relief in IP proceedings other than injunctions or

damages• AIPPI US Division will draft report on each question

– Reviewed by relevant committees, staff, AIPLA Board, and USPTO

– Sent to AIPPI in May, 2013• AIPPI Executive Committee will debate and vote on resolutions

during Helsinki meeting• Number of votes is determined by membership of the national

group (U.S. currently has 8 votes based on about 275 members)
