This Guide will assist you in implementing Call to Faith—A Thematic Approach to Young Adolescent Catechesis in Catholic schools. You will find easy to follow five-day lesson plans that help you use the Grade 7 and the Grade 8 Teacher Editions with the sessions in the Jesus Christ Faith Booklet.

Each two-page lesson plan in this Guide corresponds to one of the sessions in the Jesus Christ Faith Booklet. A one-page lesson plan corresponds to Faith in Action.

Each of these lesson plans

• notes which chapter and grade level of the Teacher Edition to use.

• correlates the page numbers of the Jesus Christ Faith Booklet to the Grade 7 or 8 Teacher Edition.

• indicates any online resources referenced in this Guide, such as full-page prayer celebrations and chapter and unit reviews.

• provides a day-by-day overview that highlights the minor difference between the Jesus Christ Faith Booklet and the Grade 7 or 8 Teacher Edition, providing additional direction for activities or features that only appear in the Jesus Christ Faith Booklet.

• After reading Faith Walk and discussing the question on FB page 5, comment along these lines: Being human means we can think and choose and love—which distinguishes us from animals. It also means that we die. To be divine is to be God, existing forever and having no beginning or end. Jesus is both human and divine.

• Then provide Bibles and have the students work in small groups to search the Gospels for an example of Jesus’ humanity and another of his divinity.

• Optional Activity: See the Activity on the reduced student page and follow the directions on wrap page 93.

FB Pages 6–7; Grade 7 TE Pages 94–95

• Follow the directions on wrap pages 94–95.

• Prayer: Read the first paragraph on FB page 6. Share responses to this question: How does “The Way” help you trust in God? Then proclaim John 14:6, found on FB page 6.

• After completing FB page 7, give students time to reflect on this question: How does knowing Jesus better help you understand what the Trinity is all about?

• Have students work through Check This Out! on FB page 7 before guiding them through Faith Walk. After the students respond in writing to Faith Walk, have them share their work in small groups. Ask them to share with their groups examples of people (names optional) who practice each quality listed.

• After completing FB page 10, invite students to visualize a “ONE WAY” street sign with an arrow. Say: Jesus marks The Way so clearly, but modern society is filled with conflicting messages and confusing signals, making it hard to stay on the right path. • Optional Activity for the graphic organizer (Jesus tells Us About His Relationship with Us on FB page 43, In His Words on wrap page 105):

– Divide the class into four small groups, and refer to the graphic organizer. Assign each group one of the images from Scripture: Vine and Branches, Good Shepherd, Bread of Life, and Light of the World. Give each group strips of paper and markers.

– Explain that each group is to read its assigned Scripture passage and the comments presented in the graphic organizer. Ask students to think about what Jesus is saying: Who is he and what kind of relationship does he want to have with us? What does this Scripture passage tell us about how we are to live?

– Have groups discuss the message about who Jesus is and what this means for us. Then, on strips of paper, have groups each write one sentence describing what Jesus is saying about his relationship with us and one sentence describing how we can respond.

– Invite each group to read its Scripture passage and share what is on its strips. Have each group post its responses on newsprint, chart paper, or a bulletin board.

– Summarize the responses from the small group activity. Invite students to add their thoughts. Ask: Which image—Vine, Shepherd, Bread of Life, Light of the World—speaks most clearly to you about who Jesus is? What challenges do you see in being in relationship with Jesus like these images suggest?

• The Activity on the reduced student page on wrap page 105 may be used as an additional activity. Follow the directions on the wrap.

• Follow the directions on wrap pages 108–109, including Catholics Today.

• Work with Faith Walk on FB page 47 by following these steps:

–Explain that the purpose of the activity is to become familiar with the process of conversion. Share with the students that “before” and “after” pictures can help us to see that someone or something has undergone a physical makeover. Explain that it’s not so easy to see the results of a spiritual makeover: It’s not a superficial or external transformation, but one that can be seen through how we act toward others, or in our attitudes, or by dropping habits that deplete the spirit. Surface a few examples.

–Divide the class into small groups. Instruct each of the groups to create a skit that demonstrates a spiritual makeover: before and after. Encourage them to refer to any or all of the steps in Faith Walk as they plan their skits. Have the groups present their skits.

• Optional Activity: See the Activity on the reduced student page and follow the directions on wrap page 109.

• When reading the first two paragraphs on FB page 52, discuss: What do you think being different but the same has to do with being Catholic?

• Optional Activity:

– Help students discover that Catholics hold common, core beliefs about their faith, but that how Catholics practice these beliefs can differ, depending on culture, language, and customs.

– Divide the class into small groups, and give each group two pieces of newsprint or chart paper and markers. Instruct the groups to label one paper “Beliefs” and the other “Practices.” Explain that the object of the activity is to surface as many beliefs as they can that all Catholics have in common. Tell them to refer to FB pages 52 and 53, and remind them that much of what Catholics believe is stated in the Nicene Creed.

– On the other paper, they are to name ways that Catholics practice those beliefs. These practices—rituals, customs, celebrations, and so forth—can be practices with which they are familiar, or practices they have heard that others do. Provide an example. For instance, if a family believes in the importance of prayer, their practice could be to take time each night to pray before bedtime.

– Give the groups approximately 10 minutes to work on the activity. Then have each group present its results to the class and tape its papers on the walls around the room.

– After each group has presented, ask: What did you discover about our beliefs and practices? Summarize the activity using points illustrated on the posted papers.

• After reading Faith Walk on FB page 53, give students time to reflect and pray.

FB Pages 54–55; Grade 8 TE Pages 118–119

• Prayer: Proclaim 1 Corinthians 12:12–13: “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”
