SURAH AT-TALAQ (THE DIVORCE) MEDINAN PERIOD Division: 600 1 O Prophet! When you divorce women, divorce them for their Iddad 388 [Abstinence term] and count Iddad. And surrender under the guardianship of Allah, your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. Do not turn them out of their homes unless they have committed a blatant transgression or immorality, and do not let them leave their homes either. These are the limits of Allah. And whoever goes beyond the limits of Allah has treated himself unjustly. You do not know if Allah will bring about another matter. 2,3 And when they have reached the end of their term, either keep them in compliance with the tradition/in a way that is acceptable for all or part with them in compliance with the tradition/in a way that is acceptable for all. Take two just ones from among you as witnesses. And establish the testimony for Allah. This is what those who believe in Allah and the Last Day are advised. And whoever surrenders under the guardianship of Allah, Allah will show him a way out and bestows upon Him blessings from a direction he least expects. 5This is the command of Allah He has revealed to you. And whoever surrenders under the guardianship of Allah, Allah will forgive his evil deeds and increases his reward.

6Lodge them in a part of your home according to your capacity and do not treat them in a manner that may harm them and you. If they are pregnant, give them alimony/compensation until they deliver their burden. If you nurse your children, pay

them their fee and counsel among yourselves in compliance with the tradition/in a way that is acceptable for all. And if you suffer discord, then another woman should nurse paid by the father.

7Those who have vast resources should spend/give alimony in accordance with their resources. And those who have restricted resources should give from that which is given to him by Allah. Allah never burdens a man over his capacity. Allah will bring about relief after every hardship.

8There have been many cities people of which rebelled against their Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] and His messengers and We concluded their accounts severely and punished them with an unprecedented wrath.

9Thus did they suffer the consequences of their deeds. And their end was to suffer in a complete loss.

10,11Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Then, o you believers who are capable of understanding! Surrender under the guardianship of Allah. Surely, Allah has sent upon you a messenger who recites to you the admonition, manifest Ayat, evidence/signs of Allah to guide those who believe and do good deeds out of darkness and into the light. And whoever believes in Allah and do good deeds, Allah will admit him into the gardens of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] underneath of which rivers flow, to abide there eternally. Allah has surely bestowed upon him an excellent sustenance.

12Allah is the One Who created the seven heavens and as many layers of ground. The command descends and descends from the Heavens upon the Earth so you may understand that Allah is Omnipotent and His knowledge encompasses all things.
