Rare example in Missouri of consistently designed Gothic revival
church, built entirely of wood in 1870-1871. One of the church's
original communicants, Judge John W. Emerson, a native of Ironton,
donated the original plans of the church and the property on which
it is located. (A History of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ironton, Missouri, no publ., [19l|2|. )—————————————•———————
Main block of church, 23 by 60 feet, under steep ridge roof.
Transept at west end of nave. Two separate main entrances (one on
south face and one on east face) at base of three story corner
belfry tower open into southeast corner of the nave. Wooden members
supporting the bell were replaced with steel beams in 1967.
(Information in a letter to the Missouri State Park Board from
Edward G. Cobb, Vicar, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ironton,
Missouri, August, 1967.)
Exterior walls covered with vertical wood sheathing have accentuated
vertical ribs, terminating under eaves in Gothic-form moulding.
Wooden buttresses on exterior nave side walls and on transept gable
end walls are capped by spire pinnacles which pierce and project
above roof line and are finlal peaked.
Exterior paint changed from "rosy tan" to white, (information in
a letter to the Missouri State Park Board from Mrs. R. L. Barger,
Ironton, Missouri, August, 1967.)
Windows of Gothic proportion and formj stained glass framed in
wood and partially restored. (Information in a letter to the
Missouri State Park Board from Mrs. R. L. Barger, Ironton, Missouri,
August, 1967.)
Roof covered with wooden shingles painted in diamond pattern. Ridge
is crested and has Christian crosses at eastern and western gable
peak termini.
Nave interior roof framing system is exposed and constructed of
shaped wooden timbers with appropriate Gothic style ornament in
cluding pendants and scroll brackets.
Minor interior renovations include removal of original carpets,
replacement of box stoves with oil furnaces.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church is of primary significance as an
outstanding exajrple of raid-nineteenth century Gothic Revival
style architecture in rural Missouri.
"St. Paul's Episcopal Mission was organized on April 13, 1369.
Plans for a. church building were begun the same spring. Episco
palians, raembers of other denominations, and non-church people
helped generously with money, supplies, land, and labor." ("St.
Paul's Episcopal Church," brochure distributed by St. Paul's
Episcopal Church, Ironton, Missouri, no publ., n.d.) The
church cornerstone was laid June 8, 1870. (Iron County Register,
June 8, 1370, p. 3.) The building was near completion on Farch 30,
1871. (Iron County Register, March 30, 1371, p. 3.) Dedication
ceremonies, however, did not take place until August 3, 1879.
(Iron County Register, August 7, 1379, p. 3.)
The present Vicar of tf^ church, Edward G. Cobb, stated that the
church had no resident minister between 1908 and 19J2. (information
in a letter from Edward G. Cobb, Vicar, St. Paul's Episcopal -
Church, Ironton, Missouri, August, 1967.)
The building is very well-maintained. Work since 1952 has
restored the church to nearly original condition.
