As a young Chinese boy growing up inNorthbridge, 83-yer-old Bill Chieremembers it as a very dierent place.

or Bills ather imothy, who in 1898 had movedto Perth in search o work.

At bout 16-yers-old, nd on his on, myather moved to Perth rom China to start a newlie, Bill said.

im joined ht s then groing PerthChinese community, which consisted of about 840predominately single men. Determined to make ago o it, and despite the looming inuence o theGret Depression, im set up his on businessin the 1930s.

Trading as J & S Chiew Produce Merchants, the

store thrived, and became a landmark at 99 101James Street or more than 40 years.

Its stock in trade was supplying goods or themrket grdens nd stbles littered throughoutthe area. Its speciality items included its amousmanure especially shipped in rom Melbourne.

Some o Bills erliest childhood memorieswere helping out at the amily store afer schoolin the 1930s.

From here, he itnessed smll, tight-knitnd enterprising Chinese community duringthose days.

Tere werent a lot o Chinese people mostorked in the mrket grdens ll dy nd onlycame in at night, he said.

Tey were happy, but worked hard and didntseem to have much so cial lie, Bill said.

Bill remembers the Chung Wh Associ-tion right across the road rom his athers store.Formed in 1909, Chung Wh s Perths frstethnic ssocition, nd plyed pivotl role inostering the socil nd culturl needs o wasChinese residents.
