Ellensburg is in the south-central part of the county and easily accessible by interstates 90 and 82; 110 miles east of Seattle and 35 northwest of Yakima. The Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce, established in 1908, is an essential part of Ellensburg’s economy, history and cultural life. The private, not for profit as-sociation has hundreds of members, including businesses owners and individuals. It represents a huge part of Ellensburg’s economic base, and provides its members with invalu-able networking opportunities. It also administers multiple commit-tees and task forces that cover many issues citywide. The chamber offers dozens of benefits for its members, from marketing services to educational business forums. It is constantly adding to its already lengthy list of member benefits, and has recently added more, including health insur-ance, which provides members with individual and group plans, group dental and vision, discount prescrip-tions, long-term care insurance, Medicare part D prescriptions, and Medicare supplements. It also recently added travel-ing discounts, conference calling, and an online shopping mall. Some of its other benefits include network-ing events, such as Business After Hours, and its newly added Busi-

ness Before Hours, referral services, a monthly newsletter, which provides members with affordable advertising opportunities, an informative Web site (www.ellensburg-chamber.com), relocation packages, discounts on things such as credit card process-ing, long distance telephone servic-es, membership mailing labels, and more. The chamber adds new members each month and is cur-rently focusing on business reten-tion, as well as recruiting new busi-nesses. Adding services, such as the ones mentioned above, will help keep successful businesses operat-ing in Ellensburg. Over the past several years, the chamber has helped increase the number of tourists exponen-tially by hosting events such as the extremely popular WinterHop BrewFest, held every January, the

community event, Moments to Re-member, held every November, and the Bite of the ‘Burg, which welcomes Central Washington University students each September.

Experienced Staff helps Businesses grow

A very common question asked of the chamber of commerce is “what does the chamber do”?

Our response is simple: We work hard to create a strong local econo-my, promote the community through tourism and other avenues, provide businesses with networking opportu-nities, and represent the interests of businesses to government. All of our goals, programs and principles are summed up in these four short points.

The Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce has much more going on behind the scenes than people may realize. Established in 1908, the chamber has a long history of not only promoting, but fostering local businesses while also spurring economic change. Being a member of the chamber is an essential part of running a successful business, whether it be a for-profit or a non-profit. It networks people in ways that would otherwise not be possible with monthly events, newsletters, e-mail updates, and special publications, such as this one.

Beyond that, the chamber also has an extremely dedicated and knowledgeable staff. Its Executive Director, Marshall Madsen, has run businesses in Ellensburg for several years. Leslie Berry has spent years at the chamber as its Executive Assis-

tant. She, like Madsen, has nurtured relationships with local businesses. And Roylene Crawford, the 2006 and 2008 Volunteer of the Year, is the chamber’s Visitor Information Center Manager and Volunteer Coordina-tor. She too has developed valuable contacts with Ellensburg’s business and volunteer force.

New to the chamber is Tony Brooks, however, Brooks isn’t new to Ellensburg’s business scene. Prior to his job as Member Services Direc-tor with the chamber, Brooks spent nearly 17 years as an advertising representative. He joined the cham-ber in July of 2008, and his duties include member recruitment (104 new members since his employment) and retention, planning and hosting chamber events such as after hours, business lunches, and selling advertising space for special chamber publications.

With these four valuable staff members and the volunteer team, the chamber is accomplishing not only its’ everyday goals, but going beyond the call, making sure each member’s needs are met through the programs, events and involvement of the chamber.

The chamber provides members with services such as travel dis-counts, conference calling, online shopping, networking, referral servic-es, credit card processing, relocation packages, and many other benefits. It’s an invaluable membership that every business owner should consider being a part of.

Ellensburg’s Business Future is Bright

The U.S. economy has seen better days, and Ellensburg is no excep-tion. However, Ellensburg and Kittitas County officials are taking advantage of the downturn by preparing for the future, and according to one long-time local commercial real estate agent, that future’s very bright.

“We are situated perfectly be-ing only 100 miles from Seattle. The west interchange retail is promising. There are negotiations going on out there for future businesses,” says Bob Hansen, an agent with Re/Max Community Realty. “Now that things have slowed a bit and building permit applications aren’t pouring in, city and county officials are taking advantage of the downtime by reexamining ordi-nances and making them even more efficient for future growth.”

Hansen, an Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce board member and past

president, says despite the economy, potential businesses continue to scope out the Kittitas Valley. Once it picks back up, he’s confident those businesses will be eager to move into the area, increasing Ellensburg’s already eclectic retail sector.

“We are going to come through this even stronger than we were before because of the prepara-tion that’s going on now,” says Ron Cridlebaugh, Executive Director of the Economic Development Group of Kittitas County. “And we are now allowing the regional retail to come in, which will provide more stores that in the past residents have had to travel out of town for.”

Along with new businesses, Ellensburg has an already-established downtown core that boasts award-winning restaurants, art galleries, wine shops, museums, apparel, furni-ture, jewelry, gifts, and book stores. Throughout the city there are more

restaurants that offer up a wide selec-tion of fare, from Mexican and Italian to Thai, American, and beyond.

“Ellensburg truly is a great place to have a business,” says Tom Morris, current President of the Chamber of Commerce. “And with the local cham-ber as strong as it is, new businesses are received with open arms.”

Central Washington University is a valuable resource for businesses. Local Agriculture Continues to Thrive and Bring Cultural heritage

The Kittitas Valley has had a thriv-ing agricultural economy. Its main crop is timothy hay, which brings the local economy in an estimated $30 million. The valley’s hay is some of the best in the world, and the area is known globally as the grandfather of hay production with its generations of hay farmers.

One local company, Anderson Hay & Grain Co., has been in busi-ness since 1960. Its worked along side the growers for decades and has expanded its exporting reach across the world to Japan, China, the Middle East, and beyond. The area’s local hay has been in high demand for the thoroughbred racehorse industry for several years and is also fed to some of the world’s best beef.

“Kittitas Valley’s timothy hay con-tinues to be recognized around the

world as a top feed for racehorses,” says Mark Anderson, owner of An-derson Hay. “It’s also widely used in the dairy industry. It’s an honor for us to work with the growers who have commercially raised forages for gen-erations. There is an experience level here that surpasses nearly every other hay-growing area.”

There are several other local hay companies that also ship timothy hay across the nation and world. Along with hay, other crops produced in the area include potatoes, grains, oats, dry beans, peas, various orchard fruits, and even peppermint.

Also being grown in Ellensburg is the home garden. In Kittitas County families have grown their own fruit and vegetables for years. And those numbers keep rising. Customers are keeping local seed companies in thriving business, continuing a trend that is occurring across the nation.“If you can’t eat it, it’s not selling,”

says Greg Lutovsky, co-owner of Irish Eyes Garden Seeds. “The National Garden Bureau sent some statistics out in March of 2009, and they’re very eye-opening. In 2007 there were an estimated 32 million home garden-ers. In 2008 there were 36 million and already 46 million in 2009.”

“We normally only do about 5,000 orders for the year. I estimate 20,000 for 2009 if this keeps up.”

Central Washington university Attracts Students, Economic Development

If you live in Ellensburg, you’re connected to Central Washington University in some way or another. Being the largest employer in Kittitas County, it’s no wonder the city and university are so intertwined. CWU’s residential campus in Ellensburg creates cultural enrich-ment for Ellensburg and the county, provides service to residents of the county and state, and improves the cultural diversity of the entire region. The total economic impact generated by CWU included $251 million in eco-nomic output in the 2006 fiscal year.“The relationship between the univer-sity and the Ellensburg community is the key relationship in the Kit-titas valley,” says City Manager Ted Barkley. “The ideas that come from the academic community and the energy of youth that CWU brings to us makes Ellensburg a dramatically more dynamic community. This creates tre-mendous opportunity, both economi-cally and socially.” Established in 1891, CWU has been part of the community for nearly as long as Ellensburg’s existed. In 2009, the university’s fourteenth presi-dent, Dr. James Gaudino, joined the university. Gaudino continues the CWU lega-

cy of efforts building the relationship with the Ellensburg community. One of his first tasks as president included taking part in Ellensburg’s Imagine This!, a community forum designed to generate community conversation.“The discussion was an important part of my education about the rela-tionship between the town and the university,” explains Gaudino. “I look forward to continuing the discussion and to being involved in the community.” CWU is a masters degree-granting institution with approximately 10,000 students and 1,500 faculty and staff. More than 160 undergraduate and master’s degrees are offered. Since 1975, CWU has served the needs of place-bound students at six university centers throughout the state.

Ellensburg School District Continues to provide Quality Educations

With a student body of about 3,000, the Ellensburg School District has a strong tradition of providing a well-rounded education with outstanding career and technology courses, alterna-tive learning opportunities, outstanding music and choir programs, and strong remediation programs. It employs more than 170 certified staff and 180 classified employees. These teachers and staff members make it possible for students to par-ticipate in activities such as athletics, drama, and academic competitions. Recently the district appointed a new superintendent—Paul Farris—who replaced John Glenewinkel. Farris over-sees Ellensburg High School, Morgan Middle School, Valley View, Mount Stuart and Lincoln elementary schools, Excel High School, the Discover Pro-gram, and the Parent Partner Program. The district also participates in the Head Start program with Central Washington University. In 2005, the district unveiled the news, $21 million Ellensburg High School. It boasts a 2,000-seat gymnasi-um, many new computers, technologi-cally-advanced science labs, and most importantly, room to accommodate more students as Ellensburg grows.


Kittitas County Contributes to Clean, renewable Energy

In this generation, where renew-able energy is no longer a futuristic concept but instead a necessity, Kittitas County is leading the pack with a state-of-the-art wind and solar facility, located on 10,800 acres of open range land, 16.5 miles east of Ellensburg.

Puget Sound Energy’s Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility has 127 turbines and over 2,800 solar panels generating 230 megawatts—enough to power more than 60,000 homes for one year.

Set high on a sun-drenched, windy ridge above the Columbia River, the facility hosts Kittitas County’s newest educational and tourist destination, the Renewable Energy Center. The visitor has a 360- degree view looking out over the wind facility at 3,500 feet above sea level. At this elevation there are dramatic views of three of the Cascades’ highest peaks and valleys sweeping down to the Columbia River basin. Visitors can explore the trail of discovery displays at the Center and arrange for a tour of its 350-foot-tall wind turbines and solar installation. In addition, the facility can handle groups up to 50 with an open, high-tech meeting facility. It’s views and quiet surroundings make it a great place to get away for the day.

Kittitas County: A place of Caring

Ellensburg’s non-profit sector is a very strong one that’s made possible with the help of a caring community. The city’s organizations are extremely varied, from non-profits that help the disabled and ill, to those that promote the arts, events, and volunteerism.

One such non-profit, HopeSource, has been in operation for forty years, living out its mission of advocating for the people of Kittitas County through assistance with food, housing, heat, transportation, medical assistance, shopping, and social needs.

“We believe our community values mercy for those in need and we have been proud to serve the role of con-necting people with this mercy in our community,” says the organization’s Executive Director, Susan Grindle. “HopeSource is driven by the philoso-phy of self-reliance for both the orga-nization and the people we serve.”

The very first step for everyone who comes to HopeSource is to complete a budget that shows clearly the impact of how precious dollars in that household are spent. Staff then works with the family to understand how the use of those resources might be changed to improve their living conditions.

Elmview is another local large non-profit. Like HopeSource, it assists people with housing, jobs, transpor-

tation, nutrition, and other essential needs, however it focuses strictly on assisting those with disabilities. Founded in a church basement in 1965, Elmview has grown to several other counties and continues to add programs as needs change.

For those who are suffering from terminal illnesses, Hospice Friends provides in-home care, allowing peo-ple to peacefully spend their last days at home. Hospice care is provided by a highly skilled team of profession-als. Team members work together to assess and meet the patient’s and family’s unique needs as the end of life draws near. They include a medi-cal director, hospice nurse, attending physician, social worker, home health aide, volunteer, and a chaplain.

There are so many other non-profits in Ellensburg, including the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, the Cascade Land Con-servancy, the Economic Development Group of Kittitas County, the Ellens-burg Downtown Association, Kittitas County Field & Stream, Kittitas County Head Start, Planned Parenthood of Central Washington, United Way of Central Washington, and many, many more.

Kittitas County: An Outdoor Lover’s paradise

There are few places on Earth where you can ski, snowmobile, fly fish, sail, hike, mountain bike, hunt, and go rafting, all in the same area. Those are only a few of the things you can do in Kittitas County. Every season there’s something to do, which is probably why this area is an outdoor enthusiast’s haven. The county’s landscape and weather var-ies greatly from the north to the south, providing an abundance of sunshine and snow. In the southernmost part lies the mighty Columbia River, where fishing, sailing, jet skiing, and other fun activities abound. In the Ellensburg area, the climate is generally dry and sunny. Hiking, fishing the Yakima River, golf, moun-tain biking, hunting, horseback riding, camping, and cross-country skiing are popular activities. In the northern part of the county you will find down-hill skiing, groomed snowmobile trails, lakes, and more forested camping areas. All areas of the county are great for hunting—primarily a fall sport— where deer, elk, ducks, pheasants, and turkeys are hunted. Deer and elk sea-sons start in September and last until early December. Various locations around the county sell the proper per-mits. More information about hunting
