1.1 Basics
According to 3GPP Recommendation TS23 002 (Rel. 5) the UMTS architecture is made of:
• Radio access part named UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network)
• Core Network - CN
• User Equipment - UE
• interfaces Iu, Ir and Uu
• IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) Network.
The UTRAN consists of a set of Radio Network Subsystems (RNS) connected to the Core Network through the Iu.
A RNS consists of a Radio Network Controller and one or more Node Bs. A Node B is connected to the RNC through the Iub interface. The Uu is the interface between the UE and the Node B.
Inside the UTRAN, the RNCs of the Radio Network Subsystems can be interconnected together through the Iur.
On the interfaces Iu, Iur, and Iub, ATM is used for the transport of user data and higher layer signaling information.
The Core Network architecture is realized to support circuit and packet switched bearer services of an UE. Due to that, two domains are distinguished in the core:
• Circuit Switched Core (CS Domain)
• Packet Switched Core (PS Domain).
UMTS makes use of the hybrid core network of the GSM in CS Domain. In the 3GPP Rel.4 the GSM MSC evolves to the MSC Server and the MGW.
Time critical services like voice and video service (real time services) continue to use CS path through the MSC. However the IP telephony (IPT) is being used increasingly, leaning on the IMS networks (IP Multimedia Services).
The IMS subsystem comprises all CN elements for provision of IP multimedia services like audio, video, text, chat, etc. and a combination of them delivered over the PS domain. The entities related to IMS are defined in the stage 2 of the IM subsystem TS 23.228.

1.2 NSN UMTS Products Platforms
The NSN UMTS Network Elements are built on reliable and proven carrier class platforms. There are several platforms used:
• DX200 - NSN GSM elements are based on this CS proven technology (e.g. MSS, SGSN Combi)
• IPA2800 - Distributed computing platform upon which 3G UMTS NE are built (e.g. RNC, MGW)
• ATCA - Advanced Telecommunication Computing Architecture is a carrier grade networks platform. It is an open hardware platform which allows the possibility to use off shelf components, and it leaves room for application specific functionality and enhancements on the blade level
• NSN IP - the NSN IP core networks
• Unix HP/SUN - Network management and service provisioning systems are built on industrial server level.

Currently available NSN Release RU10 (according to 3GPP Rel.5 and 6) brings some improvements of the WCDMA/HSPA.
• Load based AMR codec mode selection,
• HSDPA 14Mbps/user
• QoS aware HSPA scheduling
• Streaming QoS for HSPA
• Multi-Operator Core Network
• Centralized User Event Log Management for BTS
• Full Native IP/Ethernet connectivity (provides 3GPP compliant IPv4 transport option for all RNC interfaces)
• IP based Iub interface for Flexi WCDMA BTS and Ultra Site BTS
• Frequency Support (2000MHz S-Band, 850MHz ,900MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz)
• HSPA Transport over IP
• RNC 2600
• Flexi BTS Multimode System Module
The available I-HSPA Rel 1.(3GPP Rel. 7) with flat core architecture in the user plane reduces the round trip time, OPEX and CAPEX, achieves the data rates 14, 4 Mbps DL / 2Mbps UL. In this case the RNC vanishes and its functionality overtakes the I-HSPA adapter, located at the WCDMA BTS.

2.1.1 Radio Network Controller
The Radio Network Controller (RNC) is the central controlling unit of a RNS (UMTS Rel.'99&Rel. 4-6). It is controlling itself and all the UMTS Node B of the RNS.
The RNC is connected via the following ATM based interfaces:
• Iub interface: to the connected Node Bs
• Iur interface: to neighboring RNCs
• Iu interface: to the Core Network CN.
Due to different protocol stacks, the Iu interface can be sub-divided into an Iu(ps) interface and an Iu(cs) interface. The Iu(ps) interface is used for data and signaling transmission to the PS Domain of the CN, the Iu(cs) interface is used for data exchange with the CS Domain.
The main task of the RNC is to perform all Radio Resource Management RRM functions for all UEs in its service area.
RRM means that the RNC is responsible for signaling with the UEs via Radio Resource Control RRC protocol, it is deciding about the allocation of resources, handover to other cells and release of resources, etc.
The RNC is holding the RRC connection to the UEs as long as data have to be transmitted.
It is storing the UEs location information to transmit the data to the right location.
It is responsible for reliable transmission over the radio interface, performing Backward Error Correction in acknowledged mode.
It is responsible for Ciphering / De-Ciphering and Integrity Check.

The NSN RNC solution is based on IPA2800 platform. The RNC450 was introduced with SW release RAS06 while the RNC2600 is RU10 Release. The RNC2600 is the solution to enable HSPA, voice over IP and IP services.
Both RNCs have modular SW and HW structure which allows scalability of processing power and switch capacity, as well as flexibility in terms of number and types of interfaces.

2.1.2 Node B - NSN WCDMA BTS
One or more Node Bs are controlled and addressed by the RNC. A Node B is a physical unit for implementation of the UMTS radio interface. It is converting the physical transmission of the data from fixed network transmission (ATM based) to WCDMA transmission.
As a central transmission and reception site, it serves one or more UMTS cells. It is serving one UMTS cell in case of an omni cell with 360° service or, for example, 2, 3 or 6 sector cells with 180°, 120° and 60° service respectively.
To support the high penetration levels of subscribers and the new services and applications, a range of base stations with different sizes and capacity are required to supply the varies environments used in UTRAN.
The NSN solution for Node Bs consists of different models of WCDMA BTS that are implemented in different geographical locations to meet the local needs.
The models used are Pico WCDMA solution, WCDMA UltraSite and mostly Flexi WCDMA BTS.
To prepare the data for reliable transmission over the air interface Uu, the Node B performs many WCDMA specific aspects, which are defined in TS 25.3xx and 25.4xx series.
The NSN notation used in following figures to indicate the Node B capacity is e.g. a 1+1+1 or a 2+2+2 site. This means that transceivers or carriers (TRx) are divided into different cell directions. In addition different antennas are used in different directions and the RNCs handle each cell independently. The numbers represent the amount of carriers (TRx) covering specific cell area. In a 2+2+2 site there are only two carrier frequencies used. In WCDMA the number of frequencies per operators is limited - usually 2 or 3 WCDMA carriers are licensed to one particular operator.

2.1.2.2 3G Flexi BTS
NSN Flexi WCDMA BTS is a part of NSN 3G macro BTS site solution. NSN Flexi WDCMA BTS introduced a way of building BTS sites using modules, without a specific BTS cabinet. Due to its small size, modular design and full frontal accessibility the NSN Flexi WCDMA BTS is easy to install in various locations.
From a feature and performance point of view, NSN Flexi WCDMA BTS provides a smooth evolution from Ultra Site WCDMA BTS without compromising performances or capacity.
NSN Flexi WCDMA BTS modules can be used with different BTS configurations for an integrated site solution,
It is optimized for high capacity and coverage application.
Smooth HSPA (3GPP Rel.5 -6) is provided through SW upgrade. RF and System Modules support existing voice, circuit and packet data services.
Remote Radio Head (RRH) is the RF part of the Flexi BTS in distributed solution. The distance between the SM and RF Module (i.e. RRH) can be up to 15km by using existing optical fibers.
The Multi Radio Combiner (MRC) solution makes it possible to build an antenna line sharing site with minimum effects on existing system performances. A typical down link loss is 0.5dB. The Mast Head Amplifier (MHA) will retain uplink. There are MRC
units that cover bands 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. The MRC 850 or MRC 900, e.g., gives the possibility to co-locate GSM/EDGE and WCDMA BTS in the same frequency band through antenna line sharing.

2.1.3 3G Femto Home Access Solution
Femto cells are low-power wireless access points that operate in licensed spectrum to connect standard mobile devices to a mobile operator’s network, e.g. via DSL.
Using femto cells solves these problems with a device that employs power and backhaul via the user’s existing resources. It also enables capacity equivalent to a full 3G network sector at very low transmit powers, dramatically increasing battery life of existing phones.
The NSN solution introduces approach to the 3G Femto Home Access with standards-based and open interfaces and a network element, the Femto Gateway. The Femto Gateway is connected to the core network over a standard interface and allows customer equipment CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) from multiple vendors to be connected to it. The Femto Gateway can support any Femto access point (AP) that has been certified by Nokia Siemens Networks to conform to the open interface. NSN does not provide the CPE’s but they come from partners.
With the Femto Home Access solution, people will be able to enjoy better quality 3G services at homes with any standard WCDMA terminal.

3.1 Circuit Switched Domain
The Circuit Switch Domain of the UMTS core network is common for the GSM core, i.e. the same elements are used for the GSM and UMTS. These elements are the MGW (Media Gateway) for the user plane, the MSS (MSC Server) for signaling plane and the HLR for providing a subscriber data with associated elements for authentication of the user and control of the equipment.
The MGW (Multimedia Gateway) main functions are:
• Adaptation of a conventional signaling between the MSC Server or the MGCF (Media Gateway Control Function server) and different network interfaces
• Connection of a user data from an ATM/IP backbone into the RAN or circuit switched networks
• Provision of tones and announcements to end users
• Transcoding.
The MSC Server is responsible e.g. for signaling, paging and collecting charging information while the MGW is doing a switching.
MSC Server contains communication management functionality and is also responsible for a mobility management.

3.1.1 MGW IPA2800
The MGW IPA2800 (NSN Media Gateway) is based on the NSN IPA 2800 platform.
The MGW IPA2800 is situated as a media gateway, a node with gateway functionality to provide inter-working between different media (e.g. TDM-TDM, TDM-ATM, IP-TDM), e.g. the IP multimedia subsystem on one side and the time division multiplex oriented PSTN on the other side.
In case of 3G the MGW main task is to provide interworking between 3G RAN and GMS MSS and transcoding between A interface and Iu interface, i.e.:
• ATM to TDM conversion
• Iu –A' interface signaling conversion between narrowband and broadband SS7
• Transcoding
It performs inter-working between IP v4 or v6 real-time protocol and PCM30 a-law or µ-Law by interconnecting these different types of bearer.
The MGW IPA 2800 provides an IP based H.248 or Megaco interface towards the Media Gateway Control Function, which is responsible for the control inter-working (SIP-CCS7) and the call control in the MGW.

3.2 Packet Switched Domain
UMTS Packet Switched (PS) Domain offers PS bearer services.
It is based on the GSM feature GPRS. Originally, this domain was developed for non-real time packet switched applications, such as file transfer, e-mail, access to Intranet, but now days it is mainly used for multimedia services (MMS). By improving the offered QoS in release Rel. 5 and higher, the real time services become important offer of the 3G operators.
The 3G-SGSN and GGSN are located in the packet domain. Other specified PS domain entities are the BGF and the CGF, which are often offered as stand alone devices. There are also some network elements, which are shared by the packet switched and circuit switched domain. The common network elements comprise the HLR, AuC and EIR.

3.2.1 3G Serving GPRS Support Node SGSN
The basic functions of the 3G SGSN are:
• Authentication and Mobility Management
• Routing of data to the relevant GGSN when a connection to an external network or intra-network mobile to mobile connection is require
• Generation of charging data and traffic statistic.
The NSN 3G SGSN is built on DX 200 and ATCA platform.
The control part of the 3G SGSN consists of Mobility Management layer which handles mobility and security of user and of Session Management layer which handles the Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context activation and QoS reservation.
It performs also packet processing and packet routing functions.
Both 3G SGSN platforms offer a compact, modular device which enables flexible configuration.
The capacity may be optimized for maximum data throughput or for the maximum number of simultaneous subscribers.
3.2.1.1 Combi SGSN and Flexi Network Server
Combi SGSN architecture and HW is designed for a 2G/3G SGSN environment. In this environment, the product must support different complex interface variants (Frame Relay in Gb interface. ATM in Iu interface and SS7 E1/T1 in Gr interface towards HLR).
Combi SGSN is a field proven 2G/3G SGSN product with a market leading installed base. By introducing the Direct Tunnel and I-HSPA concept, it became visible the need for different types of the SGSN/MME products.
Flexi Network Server HW and SW architecture is optimized for 3G SGSN use with:
• all IP environment where there is no need to support complex HW for FR, ATM, E1/T1
• flat network architecture
• transaction capacity performance instead of user-plane processing capacity
• bigger radio network connectivity capacity (eNB and RNC capacity with IP).
There is a clear need for two different kinds of SGSN/MME products in the future in order to provide an optimal solution for the operators. Both of the products will stay in the NSN portfolio to serve their dedicated positioning.

3.2.2 GPRS Gateway -Support Node GGSN
The NSN GGSN acts as an interface between the PS core network and external packet data networks. For an external network the GGSN is simply a router to a subnetwork. When the GGSN receives data addressed to a specific user it checks if the address is active. If the address is active it forwards the data to the SGSN that serves the user equipment or else the data is discarded.
In addition the GGSN routs mobile originating packets to the correct external network. The same GGSN can serve GPRS and 3G subscribers simultaneously.
3.2.2.1 Flexi Intelligent Service Node ISN
The NSN Flexi ISN is a scalable carrier grade product incorporating gateway GPRS Support Node and service awareness functions. It acts as a gateway between access network and data networks like Internet, corporate network or service network, e.g. IMS network.

4 NSN IMS Products In the communication world different networks exist, standardized by different standardization organizations like ITU-T, GSM-ETSI, 3GPP, IEEE etc. These traditional networks were vertical oriented with strong division between voice, data, mobile and broadcast networks.
The evolution from CS to PS communications technology made significant erosion of these traditional barriers. With Voice over IP offering ‘free’ telephony and with voice, video and internet services available on multiple devices via a single broadband connection, operators, service providers, and device manufacturers have all had to re-think the fundamentals of their businesses. At the same time, they have to cope with the continuing rise of mobility usage, which in the voice domain is already overtaking fixed-line usage. As mobile data rates edge closer to those enjoyed by fixed broadband users, the race is on to deliver a cost-efficient, seamless multimedia possibility anywhere, any time, on any device.
Solution is Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) strategy. This strategy offer users convenient access to voice, data and video/TV services, supported by mobility over any access network.
FMC is based on IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architecture.

4.1 FMC Components
• P-CSCF or Proxy Call Session Control Function The proxy CSCF is the first contact point within the IM CN system. Its address is discovered by the user equipment during the CSCF discovery. It behaves like a proxy i.e. it represents the user equipment and forwards the registration and session initiation messages.
• SBC or Session Border Controller The components of the SBC are not incorporated in a single piece of equipment but are distributed. The signaling controller is collocated with the P-CSCF and controls over the PCS a media proxy at the edge of the access network. It controls the access of signaling messages to the IMS core network, and manipulates the contents of these messages. The term border control function (BCF) will be used for this part. The user plane of the SBC controls the access of media packets to the network. The term BGF will be used for this part.
• BGCF or Break Out Gateway Control Function The BGCF is necessary for the establishment of multimedia session between the IMS and the CS domain. In case the S-CSCF is unable to route the SIP Invite Message to a terminating I-CSCF, it forwards it for a session setup to the BGCF. The BGCF than selects a media gateway control function.
• I-CSCF/S-CSCF or Interrogating/Serving Call Session Control Function, Interrogating CSCF (I-CSCF) is the contact point within an operator's network for all connections destined to a user of that network operator, or a roaming user currently located within that network operator's service area. There may be multiple I-CSCFs within an operator's network. The Serving CSCF (S-CSCF) performs the session control services for the UE. It maintains a session state as needed by the network operator for support of the services. Within an operator's network, different S-CSCFs may have different functionalities.
• HSS Home Subscriber Server The HSS is the subscriber database of the IMS (like the HLR for the mobile network). Subscriber accounts, profiles and access rights are stored in this central database that can be accessed from the CSCF to provide a temporary copy of the profiles. In the future the HSS will contain entries from the mobile network and the IMS. In the first stage these functionalities are separated in two units. The protocol used for communication between CSCF and HSS is Diameter.

• MGCF or Media gateway control function The MGCF provides the control plane for the interconnection point between the packet and circuit switched networks. It is the signaling unit of the MGW to control this unit and to convert signaling messages between circuit switched and packet switched networks, i.e. SS7 and SIP. The controlling of the MGW is done via MEGACO the media gateway control protocol.
• MGW or Media Gateway The MGW is a switch which is capable of interconnecting packet and circuit switched networks. Therefore it provides interfaces for these "two worlds" like PCM30 for circuit switched and voice over IP (via ATM or Ethernet) for packet switched networks. Its purpose is the conversion of user traffic between the IMS and circuit switched networks like the fixed telephone network or GSM networks. For this reason also the capability to convert between various codecs, like G.711 for circuit switched or adaptive multi rate (AMR) for IMS subscribers is essential.
• MRF or Media Resource Function The MRF comprises the multimedia resource function control (control) and multmedia resource Function Processor (bearer) and is used for multimedia announcements, audio transcoding, multi Party calls, Conference booking etc. Since IMS 6.0 the MRF is accessible via Mr interface.
• PDF or Policy Decision Function It provides policy based network resource control, to authorize and control the resource usage for PDP contexts in GGSN.

5.1 Basics
To reduce OPEX and ensure quality in growing complex mobile networks (NW) an Operational Support System is required.
The NW management can be described as a system with different management levels involved in managing any system. The lowest level is NE management which handles the NE, e.g. NE configuration, alarm monitoring. The next level is called NW management which handles the NW wide issues, e.g. alarm monitoring, network integration. In the figure these two levels are indicated as Resource.
The NE and NW management functions are:
• Administration management
• Configuration management
• Monitoring and Fault management
• Performance management
• Security management
On the top of the NW management is Service management which handles the functions that control services offered by the network, like capacity or coverage, QoS, i.e. service assurance and service fulfillment.
The Business management level (BSS) is on the top of the Operational Support System consisting of the systems that run, e.g. charging or some intelligent tasks.
The NSN UMTS management solutions to support mentioned operational tasks are NetAct , @vantage Commander and iNMS.
NetAct provides a full scalable management capability for both packet data and traditional voice traffic independent of technology.
