Be thoughtful, be silent, and be reverent, for this is the House of God. Before the service, speak to the Lord; during the service,

let the Lord speak to you; after the service, speak to one another.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Your Love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created and You shall renew the face of the earth. O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in Your consolations, through Christ our Lord, Amen. PROCESSIONAL HYMN ……………………………………..……………………….. 439 CPWI

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the Cross! Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory His army He shall lead, Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The solemn watchword hear; If while ye sleep He suffers, away with shame and fear; Where’er ye meet with evil, within you or without, Charge for the God of battles, and put the foe to rout. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict in this His glorious day. Ye that are men now serve Him against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger and strength to strength oppose. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armour, each piece put on with prayer; When duty calls or danger be never wanting there. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To him that overcometh, a crown of life shall be; He with the King of Glory shall reign eternally.

Readers: 7:00 am Randy Conliffe 9:30 am Anglican Church Women Reader: A Reading from the Word of God written in Jonah 2:1-9.

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, 2

saying, “I called to the Lord out of my distress, and He answered me; out

4

of the belly of Sheol I cried, and You heard my voice. 3

You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all Your waves and Your billows passed over me.

4 Then I said, “I am driven

away from Your sight; how shall I look again upon Your holy temple?” 5

The waters closed in over me; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped around my head

6 at the roots of the mountains. I went down

to the land whose bars closed upon me for ever; yet You brought up my life from the Pit, O Lord my God.

7 As my life was ebbing away, I

remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to You, into Your holy temple.

8 Those who worship vain idols forsake their true loyalty.

9 But I

with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to You; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!”

Reader: The Word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. HYMN - 7:00 AM ……………………………….. “PRECIOUS LORD TAKE MY HAND”

Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn; Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light: Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home. When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near, When my life is almost gone, Hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall: Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home. When the darkness appears and the night draws near, And the day is past and gone, At the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand: Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

I am speaking the truth in Christ — I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit —

For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh.

4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the

glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;

GRADUAL HYMN …………………………...………………………………………….. 265 CPWI To the Name of our salvation, Laud and honour let us pay, Which for many a generation Hid in God’s foreknowledge lay; But with holy exultation We may sing aloud today. Jesus is the Name we treasure; Name beyond what words can tell; Name of gladness, Name of pleasure, Ear and heart delighting well; Name of sweetness, passing measure, Saving us from sin and hell. ’Tis the Name for adoration, Name for songs of victory, Name for holy meditation In this vale of misery, Name for joyful veneration By the citizens on high.

’Tis the Name that whoso preacheth Speaks like music to the ear; Who in prayer this Name beseecheth Sweetest comfort findeth near; Who its perfect wisdom reacheth, Heavenly joy possesseth here. Jesus is the Name exalted Over every other name; In this Name, whene’er assaulted, We can put our foes to shame: Strength to them who else had halted, Eyes to blind, and feet to lame. Therefore we in love adoring, This most blessèd Name revere; Holy Jesu, Thee imploring So to write it in us here, That hereafter heavenward soaring, We may sing with angels there.

+ THE GOSPEL + Reader: The Lord be with you. Response: And also with you. Reader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to

Matthew 14:22-33. Response: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

22

Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.

23 And after He

had dismissed the crowds, He went up the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone,

24 but by this time the boat,

battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them.

25 And early in the morning He came walking towards them on the

lake. 26

But when the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear.

27 But

immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”

28

Peter answered Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water”

29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat,

started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. 30

But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Jesus immediately reached out His hand

and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32

When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33

And those in the boat worshipped Him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Reader: This is the Gospel of Christ. Response: Praise to Christ our Lord.

I heard an old, old story, how a Saviour came from glory, How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me; I heard about His groaning, of His precious Blood's atoning, Then I repented of my sins and won the victory.

O victory in Jesus, my Saviour, forever. He sought me and bought me with His redeeming Blood; He loved me ere I knew Him, and all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing, of His cleansing pow'r revealing. How He made the lame to walk again and caused the blind to see; And then I cried, "Dear Jesus, come and heal my broken spirit," And somehow Jesus came and bro't to me the victory.

I heard of Jesus dying and the story of His rising How women came; amazed to see the empty rocky tomb The chain of death was broken the Word of God was spoken O death, 0 death, where is your sting? O grave, what victory? I heard about a mansion He has built for me in glory. And I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal sea; About the angels singing, and the old redemption story, And some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory.

What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought Since Jesus came into my heart; I have light in my soul for which long I have sought, Since Jesus came into my heart.

Since Jesus came into my heart, Since Jesus came into my heart; Floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll, Since Jesus came into my heart.

I have ceased from my wand’ring and going astray, Since Jesus came into my heart; And my sins which were many are all washed away, Since Jesus came into my heart. I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure, Since Jesus came into my heart; And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure, Since Jesus came into my heart. There’s a light in the valley of death now for me, Since Jesus came into my heart; And the gates of the City beyond I can see, Since Jesus came into my heart. I shall go there to dwell in that City I know, Since Jesus came into my heart; And I’m happy, so happy as onward I go, Since Jesus came into my heart.

We come, obedient to Thy word, To feast on heavenly Food; Our meat the Body of the Lord, Our drink His precious Blood. Thus may we all Thy Word obey, For we, O God, are Thine; And go rejoicing on our way, Renewed with strength Divine.

THY MERCIES HOW TENDER HOW FIRM TO THE END! RECESSIONAL HYMN – 7:00 AM ………………………………………………... 378 CPWI

O worship the King all glorious above; O gratefully sing His power and His love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. O tell of His might, O sing of His grace! Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; His chariots of wrath the deep thunder clouds form, And dark is His path on the wings of the storm. The earth, with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old, Hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

Page 5: 08 7 AUG 2011 - Pentecost8

9

Frail children of dust and feeble as frail, In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail; Thy mercies how tender how firm to the end! Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend. O measureless Might, ineffable Love, While angels delight to hymn Thee above, Thy ransomed creation, though feeble their lays, With true adoration shall sing to Thy praise.

RECESSIONAL HYMN – 9:30 AM …………….. “HIS COMING DRAWETH NIGH” Lift up your heads, ye saints, we’re told redemption draweth nigh, Ere long His glory we’ll behold as lightning from on high; We’ve toiled and prayed and waited here, but soon His face we’ll see, And when He comes He’ll dry each tear, and we the Bride shall be.

His coming draweth nigh, we’ll meet Him in the sky, And go with Him to the marriage feast somewhere on high; Oh, what a time ‘twill be, our loved ones we will see, Far up above the tribulation by and by.

Farewell, gay world, our song shall be, we’ll sing it thru the air, Above the rugged hills and trees His wondrous glory share; Lift up, look up, still watch and pray, tho’ fading be your eye, Nor think His coming be delayed, it surely draweth nigh. Around the festive board that day we’ll raise a mighty shout, Like many waters of the sea, we’ll sing and dance about; The angels cannot sing the song, they’ll stand with folded wings And wonder at the praise prolong, we’ll crown Him King of Kings.

Prayer After Mass (Servers Prayer):

Glory to You Lord Jesus, glory to You. Grant that as I have served in Your presence, may we also come to serve in Your heavenly kingdom. In all things God be glorified. Amen.

Priest: The Mass is ended. Go in peace rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

People: Thanks be to God. Amen!!!

Emancipation Still Comin’ (Part II) The title of this article comes from a work completed by one of my lecturers at Codrington College in the late 1970’s, Dr. Kortwright Davis. He was born in Antigua and boasted of having been one of the boys raised by Bishop Donald Knowles, the first Bahamian to become Bishop.

In his book he writes, “political freedom has indeed reached the former British territories for the most part, but the project of total emancipation is still to be realized.” Even now that we have our own local leaders, like prime ministers, bishops, archdeacons, canons, police commissioners and the likes; our experience as a people is still so colonial. Our own native blacks must stop imitating colonial over-lords and strike out to forge a new identity for local leadership. The inability of our leaders to be radically different results in our people cloaking the desire to remain in chains. Ironically our people believe they can experience freedom in chains. Look around, examine our landscape since independence; the mental landscape is the same or even worse, we have regressed. Many parents are not telling the story to their children, so our younger generation lacks the desire to be radically different and thus push us further away from our proverbial Egypt of bondage.

Davis was right in advancing, “Caribbean people as a whole have come to realize that, from beginning to end, their history is bound up not with the edicts of Britain, nor yet with the might of the United States, but chiefly with the ongoing emancipatory activity of the God who is the sovereign Lord of all creation.”

God’s desire is for us to be free, to be Bahamian, not British or American. It’s a cultural revolution we need, Bahamians can do well to support every initiative rather than mock and criticize the few who are bold enough to advance ideas. We must not stop until:

We have our own national dress and put down our “dressing up” like British in their cold weather.

We honour our people within our own honours system.

Afro- Bahamian history is taught to all our children in all our schools.

Our intellectuals can evolve their own indigenous trappings to signify their office and abandon their wigs, gowns, stockings etc., of the colonial masters.

We erect statutes and monuments of our own local heroes / nation builders long side the colonials.

Thoroughfares can be appropriately named in honour of model citizens in our communities.

When we can inspire our children with hope by institutionalizing named individuals and have books written and studied with our own story as part of our national development.

Stop giving mere lip service to a one Bahamas.

We can build up one another rather than revelling in how we can bad talk and destroy each other thus falling to bad habits employed by old time slave masters to keep us in shackles.

God emancipates, he sees and hears our plight. God wants us to be free why do we not grab the opportunity and stop being our own put back.

“The right hand of God is planting in our land, planting seeds of freedom, hope and love. In these Caribbean lands let God’s people all join hands, and be one with the right hand of God.” *
