The West Midlands Low Carbon Vehicle Technology Project represents a collaboration between leading autcompanies, sector representative organisations, and research institutes in England's West Midlands, designstimulate R&D activity into the development of enabling technologies to accelerate the introduction of next glow carbon vehicles into the UK economy. The Low Carbon Vehicle Technologies Project represents a stracollaboration between leading automotive companies in the West Midlands and research providers, designestimulate R&D activity to accelerate the introduction of next generation low carbon vehicles into the UK econWarwick Manufacturing Group (based at the University of Warwick) is managing the project. Jaguar LandTATA, Ricardo, Zytek, MIRA and Coventry University represent key industry and research partners in both dand delivering project activities.

The impetus for the project stems from government legislation, public awareness programmes, and marketreflecting the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from industrial and manufacturing processes. In adUK government sponsored report concluded that major collaborative R&D projects were required to achieverequired step change; however, growing financial pressures had caused reductions in industry R&D, and thwas a need for publicly funded R&D programmes to support the development of new green technologies witautomotive sector. As a result, the project has been awarded 19 million (around 23 million) of public fundithe Regional Development Agency (Advantage West Midlands) and European Regional Development Fundand 10 million (around 12 million) of funding from the industry partners.

2.6 Evidence of success

Objective result and/or impact indicators are welcosection to demonstrate the success of the practice (e.g. n jobs created or safeguarded, n of patents submiamount of tons/year of freight traffic withdrawn from road, % of greenhouse gas emission reduced).

The project has focused on addressing an area where market failure has been identified. For example, thEconomic Appraisal carried out prior to the project commencing demonstrated that in the absence of publicfunding, automotive companies in the region would simply be unable to devote the scale and scope of resotowards R&D required to develop new leading edge enabling technologies. Importantly, the project hsuccessfully sought to engage supply chain SMEs, as well as OEM automotive companies, as a basis for stiwider innovation/ knowledge spillovers and in order to maximise potential impacts for the West Midlands ec(particularly from the standpoint of jobs created/safeguarded and GVA generated).
