Keeping Our Focus. I have been finding myself standing in

a room into which I had just walked trying to remember why

I was there. My kids tell me it's age. Maybe they are right. The cashier at Whataburger agrees with them when she gave

me free coffee. “It's free for senior citizens,” she said with a

smile.

You do not have to be a senior citizen to be forgetful, or to

lose focus. The day-to-day cares of life can get us sidetracked. But often a lack of biblical perspective leave us

pursuing all the wrong things.

Our churches are no different. It is easy to think of church as

anything but what God intends it to be. Where He is

worshiped. Where His Word is taught and preached. Where His Gospel is the focus. Where His love permeates

relationships.

Gary Miller, a pastor friend who once came and did a prayer

conference for us, wrote this on his blog:

“At the 2007 General Council of the Assemblies of God, during

his final message as General Superintendent Thomas E. Trask

preached, 'What many churches are offering America is a new religion that guarantees no hell and requires no holiness. It's

a limp spineless Christianity that does not confront sin for fear

of being judgmental. It's an impotent gospel that tells people

everything is okay.'

Brother Trask warned of five dangers threatening the effectiveness of churches:

1. Situational ethics in which Biblical absolutes are rejected.

2. Falling prey to cultural seduction. 3. Cultural accommodation, in which churches are distorting Scriptures on issues

ranging from abortion to social drinking. 4. Inclusive salvation-a view that everybody goes to heaven and no one goes to

hell.

5. Passionless pulpits-preachers that make sure no one in the pew is upset at the sermon material.”

potent gospel that tells people everything is okay.”

This troublesome state of the church, I believe, is rooted in the church paying lip-

service to the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible but not teaching nor preaching

the Bible, nor spending time in it. Too often the Bible is reduced to nice slogans or daily moral precepts. Where God is reduced to a god who simply exists to help us

with whatever we need him for or to make us feel better. Like having a divine but-

ler.

The disciples had a skewed perspective on the Messiah. They saw the glories of His

rule and His coming kingdom, but they failed to see His role as the suffering serv-ant. So when Jesus was crucified and died, they were all bummed out. Their hopes

were dashed because they did not understand. Two of them, Cleopas and his com-

panion, packed their bags and were headed home, deflated. That was when Jesus appeared to them.

Cleopas and his companion were all confused and dejected so Jesus said to them, “'How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?' And be-

ginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all

the Scriptures concerning himself” (Luke 24:25-27).

Jesus explained to them from the all Scriptures, Genesis to Malachi, about Him and

His plan of redemption.

This must be our focus. This is what our lives should be about. This is what our

churches should be about. The wonderful Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. We can-not lose this focus. We must not lose this focus.

College Hills Baptist Church,

including the Prayer Ministry,

and plaque and we enjoyed a

wonderful time eating delicious

salads and visiting after morning

worship.
