1 Introduction

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the fire propagation properties of the “Daiken Excel Tone MR New NDF” suspended ceiling system. The combustibility of the product was evaluated in accordance with SANS 10177-5:2012 while the medium-scale horizontal flame spread properties were determined in the inverted channel facility in accordance with the SANS 10177-10 test protocol. The product was given a rating in terms of SANS 428 based on these results.

2 Description of material

The product tested was delivered as ceiling panels of 1200 mm long by 600 mm wide. The product consisted of a 15mm mineral fibre without any polymeric facing. The fibre is suspected to have a polymeric or cellulosic content based on observations made during the testing.

3 Test method

3.1 SANS 10177-5:2012

A set of 40 mm x 40 mm x 50 mm thick samples were prepared and evaluated. In this specific instance, where the material had a thickness of less than the required 50 mm, the sample thickness was increased as per clause 4.2 in the standard procedure. These samples were placed on a sample holder and lowered into the standard SANS 10177-5 electrically-heated furnace, which has been pre-set to have a furnace enclosure temperature of 750 °C. The standard test duration is 10 minutes. The test criteria for non-combustibility are that the specimen should neither increase the furnace enclosure temperature by more than 50 ºC nor support flaming continuously for more than 10 seconds during the exposure period. Should either of these criteria not be met, the specimen will be regarded as combustible at 750 °C.

3.2 SANS 10177-10

The material was installed as a suspended ceiling system on Capco 38 x 24 mm tees supplied by Capco. The material was installed in the inverted channel tunnel facility with a void of 300 mm above the ceiling (Figure 3.2.1). The supplied material had to be cut to form ceiling tiles of 750 mm wide and 600 mm long. Temperatures were measured during the investigation with thermocouples located below the installation at 1 m centres. The test installation was exposed to the thermal output of three litres of n-hexane, which was placed in the fire source tray. Temperatures were continuously recorded and observations were noted of the behaviour of the material.

The installation prior to the ignition of the fire source is shown in Figure 3.2.2.

4 Test results

4.1 SANS 10177-5:2012

The material increased the furnace temperature by more than 50 °C. The burn times for the 3 specimens tested are tabled below.

Sample number Time to ignition

(seconds)

Time to extinguishment

(seconds) Burn time (seconds)

1 7 37 30

2 7 38 31

3 7 37 30

The material would therefore be regarded as combustible at 750 °C given that the burn times exceeded 10 seconds and the furnace temperature was increased by more than 50 °C.

4.2 SANS 10177-10

No ignition was noted at any stage during the test with the material above the fire source only discolouring. Figure 4.2.1 shows the test installation after 8 minutes with the fire source at maximum intensity.

5 Conclusions

The “Daiken Excel Tone MR New NDF” ceiling system as tested did not propagate flaming during the standard SANS 10177-10 test. The material is classified as combustible in terms of SANS 10177-5:2012. The overall classification of this system in terms of the SANS 428 specifications is therefore:

• Class B/ B1/ 2 The products can therefore be used in all applications, except where non-combustible ceiling installations are required. The above results does not relate to fire resistance of any ceiling system containing these products. In instances where fire resistance is a requirement, this property needs to be determined in terms of SANS 10177-2.
