building ramps for six area fami-
lies.
With direction from The Texas
Ramp Project (TRP) – an organiza-
tion that has built more than
10,000 ramps since 2006 for
elderly and disabled clients –
David Weekley and Sherwin
Williams chose to help local fami-
lies with medical needs and lack-
ing financial resources.
The combined donations from
the companies and their employ-
ees translated into 360 volunteer
hours, $12,000 in materials, and
$2,600 in cash to fund construc-
tion of future ramp components
for additional TRP clients.
I’m sure the employees of
these two companies gained as
much in giving as did those on
the receiving end. Kudos to all!

CRACKS: Be sure to address any cracks in your brick, stone, or stucco veneer.When hiring a company for the repair, make sure they are skilled in matching thebrick and mortar to avoid an unsightly patch. Pro Tip: Consider getting a foundation inspection if the cracks you see occur at thecorners of windows and door frames.
LOOSE WALLS: Over time, the metal ties that secure the brick to the frame of thehome could become rusted and disintegrate. This compromises the integrity of thehome and poses a dangerous issue. Pro Tip: Demolishing and rebuilding the wall isn't always necessary, make sureyour contractor provides the correct and most cost effective solution.
STAINS AND EFFLORESCENCE: Efflorescence (aka calcium stains), is usuallycaused by sprinklers. This build up on the brick creates a cloudy white stain. That cannot be resolved with pressure washing or cleaning alone and is only fullyremedied by staining the masonry back to its original color. Pro Tip: Most other stains like mildew can usually be removed with pressure washing and a chemical cleaner.
DRIVEWAYS AND WALKWAYS: Unsightly holes or cracks in your driveway orwalkway detracts from your home’s curb appeal. For concrete driveways, you canpatch or fill cracks or chips with a cement-repair product. Deeper cracks andsunken concrete are best left to a professional. Pro Tip: Resurfacing the driveway is a great, inexpensive way to freshen up thelook of your home and add some curb appeal. A popular option for those looking tosell their homes.

10 TIPS TO EASE HOME REMODELING
Having a home that is tailor-made to your liking is one of the greatpleasures of remodeling, but getting there can be bumpy.
Whether your home improvement project is large or small –changing out the front door, replacing the roof, or redoing akitchen or bath – local professionals have a few tips that may easeyour remodeling journey.
CONTRACTOR SELECTION
When remodeling projects go awry, it’s often due to the lack of aplan and too little communication, says Randy Godeau at Bay AreaKitchens. To help you select the right contractor and to preventyou from ending up disappointed or in court, here are ten tips fromHouston-area professionals.
1.When you are looking for a contractor, do your research.Talk with the contractor about the project and then talk to peoplewho have used the contractor. Pay attention to the number of yearsin business. Look at online reviews but don’t put too much stock inone review that isn’t glowing. GLASS ENCLOSURESIf you are looking to do a glass enclosure in your master bath, orany other place in your home remodel, follow these tips for thebest results:1. Make sure you are getting real glass blocks. The acrylic/plas-tic ones do not hold up as well in our harsh Houston heat. Theycrack easily.2. Ask your remodeler or installer for photos. Anyone that hasever installed glass blocks will have photos in their phone to showyou. You don’t want them “learning” on your project.3. Ask for references, and call the references. SELECTING A NATURAL STONE OR QUARTZCOUNTERTOPDesigner Lynne T. Jones loves the look of natural stone whether itsgranite, marble, travertine, onyx, or soapstone because “MotherNature creates some masterpieces.”
She also likes quartz materials because they have great consistencyin pattern and color and are practically indestructible.First consideration: Certain types of stone have better qualities forspecific uses. If there is a wet area, you need a material that canstand up to that exposure.Granite and quartzite are dense and durable so they work well inkitchens, baths and utility rooms. Marble is beautiful but it is alsomore porous and there is upkeep involved if you choose it for akitchen or bath.
“I do love the look of marble in a master bath, or even a kitchenisland, but I always inform clients about the potential for etchingand staining,” she says.Outside is a different story. Honed granite is a good material foroutdoor use but marble is not a good choice for an outdoorkitchen, she explains.
Most Quartz manufacturers advise against using their productsoutdoors, and will not warranty an outdoor installation.The second consideration is the style of your home. Quartz fits wellin a more contemporary or transitional style home,” she says.
There are more countertop options than ever so if your eyesbegin to glaze over, consider using a knowledgeable designer toguide you through the selection process, she says.

The complete renovation of their High Meadow Ranch housein Magnolia almost didn’t happen.
Brent and Ashley Kelton saw the 12-year-old limestone resi-dence and really didn’t consider buying it. They just didn’t likethe house. But they really loved the 9-acre property with its lakeand 125 trees. In the end, they decided to figure out what to dowith the structure after the purchase.
Ashley asked only if she could paint the kitchen cabinets:
they were yellow pine and not to her liking.“There was lots of yellow pine inside. And, well, one thing
lead to another and before I knew it, we were making plans toredo the kitchen, and then the bathroom, and then the livingrooms and bedroom. It just snowballed,” she says.
The couple first enlisted the help of Eric Wentworth, vicepresident at Morning Star Builders and from there they start-ed making plans.
“The Keltons objective was to provide updated livability, in addition to complementing the existing “Classic Texas Ranch Style,” says Architect David Patterson.

The first thing was the kitchen – keeping some of the exist-ing cabinets but painting them and then rearranging the floorplan.
Because they didn’t want the expense of new plumbing, allthe fixtures and appliances remained in place. They didn’t needto replace any of the Viking appliances, which was a consider-able savings.
But there was one thing missing from this kitchen: a largepicture window aimed at the lovely lake on the property.
“There were small windows, but it is such a pretty area thatwe added the larger window,” she says.
Wentworth says by redefining the kitchen space – adding abanquette that backs up to the island, they were able to arrangefor an in-kitchen eating area with views of the family room.
Kelton says she loved the existing limestone on the walls in
the kitchen but wanted to redo the tile floors. The limestonealso covered the hallway walls.
“I knew I wanted brick on the floors but since the founda-tion was already set, we used thin bricks (precut) to cover thekitchen floor,” she says, noting an intricate design was createdwith the bricks. in addition to using them to frame the entranceto the dining room.
Wentworth says all the walls in the house were textured witha heavy spray, which also dated the house. He scraped all thewalls and ceilings, making them smooth and giving the house asofter, cleaner look. He also replaced all the interior doors, rais-ing the 6-foot, 8-inch doors to 8-feet.
In the master bedroom, he installed bead board in the ceil-ing, adding crown molding to dress up the room.
“We made it look more casual and comfortable,” he says.
“Our goal was to provide additions that seemingly disappeared and blended into the home’s timeless Texas exterior style,” says David Patterson, architect.

Next stop was the master bathroom – a long,narrow space with a glass block wall that alsolooked dated. They replaced the two vanitiesthat line the walls, redid the tile floor and addeda clear glass wall for the steam shower so theinteresting tile work on the wall could be seen.It coordinates with the tile “rug” on the floor.
A large existing laundry room was re-assigned as Ashley Kelton’s closet and a newlaundry/utility area was created adjacent to thenew family media room.
Wentworth says the media space was origi-
nally the attached garage – fronted with glassdoors – but by attaching new rollaway doorsalong a neighboring wall, the Keltons can openup the space for outdoor entertaining.Enclosing an existing porte-cochère madespace for a two-car garage.
“The Keltons were very clear from thebeginning of what their needs were and whatthey were willing to sacrifice,” says Wentworth.“And they were open to what they wanted –both economically and realistically.”
The Keltons also wanted a guest suite,which was added onto the front of the house,with its own separate bath. The new rooms

added enough square footage to the 3,700-square-foot house tomake the project viable.The house is now a little over 5,000-square feet.
The renovation of the house took almost eight months. Butit wasn’t as bad as the Keltons had feared.
“We didn’t live in the house while the work was beingdone,” Ashley Kelton says. “But all in all it was fun. We madedecisions together along the way. We really didn’t have a grandplan. But we trusted our builder and it all came out prettygood.”
Because the house was vacant during the renovation,Wentworth says, “We were able to do the job the right way.
“Sometimes we had to turn off the water for a few days.That would be very painful if the family was living there,” hesays.
But, looking back over the project, he says ultimately thishouse now fits the property it sits on.
“It was an OK house on a great piece of property. Now it isa great house on a great piece of property,” he says.

Designer Mary Blair of By Design Interiors did justthat for a Woodlands couple who are comfortable in theirtraditional, light-filled four-bedroom home but wantedsomething different in décor – a bit more “magic,” andthat’s what she gave them.
“This is a traditional home, but we have graduallyadded more contemporary touches. I think it’s the combi-nation that makes it so special. It has the warmth of a tra-ditional home along with fresh contemporary colors,” shesays.

To start this project, Blair chose a fresh color for theentry and formal living room, a soft “Fernwood Green”by Benjamin Moore, which served as a neutral backdropbut with a more contemporary feel.
She also added a dramatic circular chandelier to givefocus and character to the entry and stairway.
Full-length custom panels, silver-white with a sparkle,cover the living room’s massive window, and a new cock-tail table by Christopher Guy provides the “wow” factor.

Blair said Houston designers are seeing greater interestin a more contemporary look with clean lines and brightercolors.
“The blend of contrasting styles and colors creates atransitional design.

“I saw this piece and knew the owner would love it.We weren’t looking to add something new here but it wasso perfect I brought it for her to see,” Blair says.
It now sits in front of the grand piano.
Blair says the trend today is to focus on color and pattern.

FIVE TIPS FOR A HOME REFRESHON A LIMITED BUDGETIf you’d like to freshen up your home for the summer but don’t havethe budget to redo the décor, there are some less expensive ways torevitalize and update your space, Blair says. Think clean lines andbrighter, lighter colors.
1. Paint. You can paint a room or even a single wall. If you are doingit yourself, talk with the professionals where you buy the paint andask them to give you tips or find help online. Think white or brightercolors, which can work for any décor. If you’re thinking green, try amore yellow tone for a happier green or in red tones, move to a hotpink. There are also some beautiful blue and purple tones available.
2. Change out pillows because they are easy to update and providea pop of color. You may also change accessories like a lamp, or if youhave a framed print, change it out for a different print. ’
3. Move things around. Try different furnishings in different rooms.Consider adding slipcovers to change the look of a sofa.
4. Down with the old. If you have an older out-of-date window treat-ment, take those draperies down and try simple blinds or shutters.Roll up those heavy rugs and try a bright patterned rug or a lighterrug of natural fiber.
5. In your bedroom, lose the winter bedding and try some lightercolors or white. Change our your bed pillows. Cut plants from outsideto have a fresh, clean look that lasts for several weeks.

UNDER-UTILIZED SPACEBECOMES A SPACIOUS BATH
Old houses are often a treasure but frequently need updatedkitchens, larger (and more) closets and a bathroom that is biggerthan a foot locker.
The 19th century house we bought in 2004 needed all ofthose things to become a comfortable home. We re-did thekitchen immediately – check. Added some storage and closetspace – check. But it was the bathroom situation that took sometime and creativity.
The house has two bathrooms: one upstairs and one down-stairs. The first floor bathroom was tiny. Really tiny.
Although it had a shower and tub, it lacked any personality orinterest. The problem was there was no place to expand it withinthe confines of this old house.
So – it was my husband Carlos’ idea and vision to use under-used existing space that allowed us to create a spacious, brightbathroom that makes our 1887-era house something special.
By combining an old laundry and a seldom-used porch, the owners got this spacious new, light-filled master bathroom.

What is your design philosophy? Good design does not need to breakthe bank! Each client has individual needs, desires, and budget and it ispart of our job as designers to honor those.
How do your clients’ tastes or personalities influence design projects?The client is the most important piece of the puzzle when designing aspace. Communication between the client and designer is critical to bringall the pieces together and loving the results.
What’s the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? I askmany questions about their life, how they utilize the space they dwell in,and what they find aesthetically pleasing. It is vital to be able to transformthe interior into what the client envisions, not just leaving a designer'sstamp on the space.
What initially drew you to interior design? Interior design is part of myDNA. The passion for creating aesthetically pleasing interiors came as ayoung girl. My precious parents would often wake up to a living room thathad been redesigned! Today I use my gifts and talents to assist clients increating a space that reflects their dreams and visions.
How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fitfor their project? It's important to know that the designer is listening toyour needs. I would ask myself other questions like; Is the designer stay-ing on budget or trying to up sell me? Is the designer flexible aboutchanges and schedules? Does the designer display good character? Isthe designer able to accept honest feedback?

First, we installed apair of matchingpedestal sinks on onewall, and had a 6-foot-wide glass-enclosedshower built.
I wanted a standalone tub – clawfootpreferred -- and I insist-ed on having a lovelychandelier over my tub.We were able to use acommon wall with theoriginal bathroom topull the water and sewerlines, which saved us aconsiderable amount oftime and money.
Where the laundryroom once stood, were-used the plumbingand electrical for thenew stackablewasher/dryer. Thestacked unit freed upenough floor space toplace the commode in aseparate private nook.Those two areas arejoined by custom-designed sliding doors,and when the doors areclosed, it resembles alarge armoire or built-inpiece of furniture.
A glass-top desk van-ity was made, alongwith closets, medicinecabinets and extra stor-age, all hand built bycabinetmaker LuisMarines.
A compact washer/dryer stack unit resides in the space next to the toilet.

Black and white octagon tile, which matched the other bath-rooms and kitchen, was installed on the floor.
One challenge we faced was how to bring the air conditioningand heating into the room because all of the other vents in thehouse come up through the wood floors from under the house.
But because this floor was tile, we didn’t want to place theregister or grills on the floor. Instead, we ran new A/C linesthrough a section of the closet and a second one hidden underthe seat in the shower, with each ending in a lower section of thewalls. This way, the two vents could be unobtrusive yet function-al.
We wanted to utilize the southern exposure, so we had a 12-foot-long window built above the sinks and shower. Hence, theroom is naturally lit all day.
We used white subway tile to line the shower with touches ofblack glass in the niches for soaps and shampoos.
Despite recommendations against this, I wanted all the tile –shower, walls and floors – to be grouted black. I’m glad I did. Itmakes the white brighter and more distinct. We used also blackgranite as a border in the shower to break up the white tile andwhite wainscoted bead board.

Landscape architect Kevin Boyd’s new inner-city client hiredhim with strict instructions that she wanted no lawn. None.Nada. Get rid of it all.
Instead, she wanted trees, flowers, bushes, more flowers andherbs -- all growing in her yard, hugging garden paths, clus-tered against boulder and statues, and spilling from oversizedpots.
And with those marching orders, Boyd, owner of the award-winning Nature’s Realm, went to work.
He first removed the lawn from the 3,200-square-footfenced yard and started putting together his plan.
His company designs the landscapes, installs the irrigationsystems, and builds porches and pergolas -- as requested by hisclients.
“First thing I do is give the client some homework: deter-mine your vision of what you want. Finding out what theywant can be difficult, but the trick is to get to know themwell,” says Boyd, who started Nature’s Realm in 2004. “I tryto find out what they are passionate about and what will makethem happy.”
For this project, he created blended flower beds with a rain-bow of colors, mixed in with natural grasses (not lawns!) andplants in a variety of sizes.
In fact, he ordered 76 different plant varieties for this proj-ect, including fruit trees (lemon, lime, peach, plum, pome-granate, cherry, satsuma and kumquat), and a kaleidoscope oflilies, salvias, roses, passion vines, azaleas, plumbagos, duran-tas, coral vines, redbuds, verbena, ruellias, daisies, crotons and

Boyd prefers to use native plants where ever possible tomake his garden designs aesthetically beautiful and environ-mentally sound. He compares his landscapes to paintings:they are layered to emphasize the contrasts, textural changesand colors.
“Plants are like drops of paint on a canvas,” he says.One of the main design elements incorporated in this yard re-do was an arroyo, or dry creek. This rock-lined gulley is oneof the focal points of the landscape, but it also serves as themain way to drain the yard of excess rain or over watering.The earth-tone rocks and boulders wind around part of theyard, and the arroyo is lined with agapanthus, crinum andblack-eyed Susans.

Boyd also designed a twisting path around the yard, dissect-ing several flower beds and leading back to the house from thecovered areas.
The path, filled with crushed granite, also leads to a seconduncovered patio of closely fitted flagstone with mondo grassesgrowing between them.
Comfortable chairs and a fire pit are nestled in a corner,opposite from a small pergola with a hanging swing attached.From either corner, the views of garden are unobstructed anddefinitely serene.
To give the yard additional depth, faux windows and shut-ters were mounted on the wood fence, with mirrors in placeof glass panes to capture reflections.

Nearby empty frames are mounted on the fence, some withflowers in them, too. A small peach tree is being trained togrow within an espalier against the fence, as well.
Boyd even made use of the narrow sides of the house byplanting hydrangeas and shade-loving plants and extending thegranite footpath along the house in these forgotten areas.
The homeowner purchased large ceramic planters and Boydfilled them with flowers. He also installed some statues andbirdhouses to add to the yard’s ambience. The decorativepieces make the outside feel like a large family room.
A covered porch attached to the house encompasses a teakdining table and chairs, as well as a couch and comfy chairs tocreate a conversation area protected from the sun or rain.
The owner of this garden wanted something she could takeover after Boyd’s work was done.
“She’s a gardener and this is her garden. She’s very hands-on,” he says. “Gardens are a very personal thing and home-owners need to have input into the process. This way they feellike they are part of it. And that’s a good thing.”
To give the yard depth, faux windows were installed on the fence. A small peach tree is on an espalier.
