Sad loss of astalwart ofChrist ChurchWith great sadness we have to report the death ofJohn Hill – a much loved and greatly respectedmember of Christ Church choir, and the secondmember of the choir to die in as many months.

John faithfully served the community at ChristChurch over many years… not only in the choir, but by ordering and accounting for the sales on theTraidcraft table , topping up the oil in all the churchcandles every week, preparing lovingly all theposters and advertising outside the church (andwe shall be using his handiwork for some time yet,for you to enjoy), carrying the cross in procession, and an efficient and unflappable verger at manyweddings and funerals.

John’s made a huge contribution to the localcommunity through the Scout movement. He wasAssistant Scout leader at the 12th Milton MountScouts, and then Leader at Milton Scouts, buildingthe troop up from nothing, and also being

instrumental in building the Milton Scout hall… hemoved on to lead the Christ Church Scout Troop in1973. In 1978 John received a Medal of Merit fromthe ScoutAssociation ‘inrecognition ofoutstandingservices’ and in1993 he receivedthe Silver Acorn ‘inrecognition ofespeciallydistinguishedservices’.

He will be greatlymissed at ChristChurch and inGravesend. As itsaid on thepresentation bowlhe was givenwhen he retired asScout leader -‘Well done, Skip’.

FIRST STEPS10TH JUNE 2015

JESUS CALMS THE STORM

It’s cloudy this morning with rather a chillybreeze. Our naughty little sheep isdisappointed because he was hoping for asunny day for our First Steps service. He’s justcome back from his holiday and his mind is stillfull of all the sights that he’s seen. His friendsmissed him and were keen to hear all about it.Our luck is in because the sun has come out forour walk to church and it has turned into alovely sunny afternoon. Hooray! Our naughty little sheep’s friends have decidedto sit at the front of the church again becausewe’ve got another scary story. Two months ina row? They’ll stop coming if we scare them toomuch! Our naughty little sheep and the glitterydragon make themselves comfortable on ourlittle altar and the other animals all snuggle uptogether. A new friend has come along to joinour merry band. His name is TT Teddy and hemet our naughty little sheep on the Isle of Man.With everything ready, first to arrive today isMum Cheryl with Oliver and Harry. It is the firsttime that they’ve come to First Steps and it’sgreat to welcome them. Others follow and soonwe’ve got a very noisy, lively crowd. It is solovely to see everyone on this lovely sunny day.Today we are thinking about Jesus calming avery scary storm. When our naughty littlesheep was on holiday on a big boat, he too wasin a big storm, when the wind howled and thewaves crashed and his poor little tummy feltmost peculiar. With our candles lit our servicebegins and we tell the story of Jesus and hisdisciples on a boat on the Sea of Galilee. Atfirst it’s quiet and peaceful because the wateris calm. Jesus is very tired. He’s been busyhealing and preaching and teaching and hereally needs a rest. So he finds himself a cosyspot, makes himself comfortable and falls intoa deep sleep.

Then the wind begins to blow really hard andthe waves get bigger and bigger until the waterspills into the boat. The disciples are scaredthat it will sink and they’ll all be drowned butJesus still sleeps on. There is a thunderousjingling of bells as we sing “I hear thunder” Ohwhat fun! Our naughty little sheep says that hecan’t understand how Jesus could still beasleep! He must be tired! Finally the discipleswake Jesus, telling him that they’re scared thatthey’re all going to die. I think that they can’tunderstand how come he’s still sleep either! Our naughty little sheep’s friends are allhuddled up together, worried about how it’s allgoing to end! But of course Jesus is in control;has always been in control. He tells the windand the waves to be still and calm and ofcourse, they are. Just like that! The disciplesare amazed. They ask each other, “Who is thisman that even the winds and the waves obeyhim?” They had thought that they knew Jesusreally well and they have discovered that theydon’t really know him at all! What a great story! We sing about ourwonderful, great big God, about Jesus’ loveand about the sun, the rain and the howlingwind. We thank God for our beautiful world andall the gifts that He gives to us each day. There’s been lots of jingling of bells buteverybody is really quiet for our prayers. Thenthe candles are blown out and we go out intothe hall and the garden for someplaytime and chat, for a drink anda biscuit. Our naughty little sheepand his many friends, includingTT Teddy, have had a greattime and loved our story and itshappy ending! They hope thateveryone will come back andjoin us for our next First Stepsservice on 8th July when we couldbe singing unaccompanied. Ohthat’ll be fun!God Bless, Rosemary Austin

ArchbishopJustin hostsGrand Imam ofAl-Azhar atLambeth PalaceThe Archbishop of Canterbury welcomed theGrand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Professor DrAhmad Al-Tayyeb, to Lambeth Palace as part of atwo-day visit. The formal relationship between the office of theArchbishop of Canterbury and the Grand Imam ofal-Azhar was officially established in 2002 after theevents of 9/11 in 2001.Archbishop Carey and His Eminence Sheikh Mo-hamed Sayed Tantawy believed it was importantto encourage learning and dialogue between theChristian and Muslim faiths.

Archbishop Justin met with Shaykh Dr Ahmadal-Tayyeb to discuss this existing commitmentestablished by their predecessors and considerhow they want to move this forward. It was agreed that there would be an annual meet-ing for the principals, alternating between Londonand Cairo, followed by a meeting of a delegationfrom the Anglican Communion and from Al-Azharto discuss a topic of common interest and concern. As part of the visit, Archbishop Justin hosted anevening reception at Lambeth Palace for theGrand Imam of Al-Azhar, which was attended byChristians, Muslims and members of other faiths. The reception was an opportunity to commend thewide range of positive, innovative and creativeinterfaith work being done around the UK.Speaking at the reception Archbishop Justin hailed“the significant change” taking place within inter-faith work, which he said was becoming moreglobal in its outlook, more focused on action andmore grounded in relationships of transparencyand integrity.

31st May dawns bright and our naughty little sheephas packed his bags ready for a holiday. He’schecked to see that he’s got his sea legs with himbecause he’s off to Southampton and onto a bigship. How exciting!! On board he’s got a nice cabinwith two portholes and a comfy bed. First stop isSt Peter Port in Guernsey and he goes ashore in atender that leaps through the choppy waves. Goodjob he remembered those sea legs! It is a lovelysunshiny day and Guernsey has got some lovelysights; the little Chapel, all decorated with tinypieces of china, that glint in the sun; Guernseycows chomping at the grass. Our naughty littlesheep is told they give lovely milk and cream andhe tries some Guernsey Gache, a fruity bread.,spread with creamy butter. Yum! He sees a greatbig gun on a cliff top, a reminder of the long agodark days of the Second World War. There’s acastle, a light house; lovely beaches and so manynice things he’ll always remember.Back on the ship and a force 12 gale overnightmake it rock in the water and our naughty littlesheep’s tummy feels very strange. His sea legsseem to have deserted him. The next morning hehas to have a long lie in, missing breakfast andlunch, which is most unlike him. Poor little chap! But come dinner time, he’s fine. Hooray! The shipsails all the way up to Tobermory on the Isle of Mullin Scotland. The houses look very pretty but ournaughty little sheep is only passing through. He’son the his way to Iona. There are lovely mountain-sides and waterfalls to see on the way and lots ofsheep and little lambs. He’d really like to stay andchat with them but there isn’t time. It’s a beautifulday and he’s just in time to catch the ferry. The skyand sea are improbably blue and Iona looks lovelyin the sunshine. Our naughty little sheep looks atthe ancient Celtic crosses and it makes him thinkof Jesus and his great sacrifice for us. He justloves Iona but he can’t stay for very long becausesoon it’s time to catch the ferry back. Our naughty

little sheep thinks that God has given us so manybeautiful places and we must do our best to takecare of them.Onward he travels in the comfort of that big ship, all the way to the Orkney Isles. More lovely andinteresting things for our naughty little sheep to seeincluding the little Italian Chapel at Scapa Flow. Itis beautifully crafted and a suitable monument tothe Italian prisoners of war who made it with suchlove and care. The sun is still shining as he goesinto Kirkwall to see the beautiful old Cathedral of StMagnus, whose bones are interred in one of thepillars there. He senses God’s presence in allthese special holy places.

Back to the big ship and Dublin is the next port ofcall. Up to the top of the Guinness Brewery to getan amazing view of the whole of the city. Lovely! And just a little sample of that famous brew. Qual-ity control, you understand.! Then back to the shipand on to the Isle of Man to catch some of the TTraces. Very scary but exciting , too! Our naughtylittle sheep has a breezy ride across the island onthe electric tram and out in the fields he sees somevery strange sheep with lots of horns; two or fouror even six! They’re called Manx Loaghtan or sothey tell him. He’s really pleased to meet them andthey invite him to come back and see them again. What a good excuse! What’s more he’s made afriend called TT Teddy and he’s coming backhome with our naughty little sheep. He will be areminder of a lovely holiday. And when that bigship brings our naughty little sheep safely back toSouthampton, he still has visions of Guernsey,Mull and Iona, the Orkneys, Dublin and the Isle ofMan buzzing round in his head and he has prom-ised himself that one day he will go back to see itall again.

FROM RECENT EDITION OF “IN REVIEW”

Archbishopsjoins faithleaders in callfor urgentaction to tackleclimate changeFaith leaders in Britain have pledged tofast and pray for the success of keyinternational negotiations over climatechange in a new declaration warning ofthe “huge challenge” facing the worldover global warming.

Representatives of the major faithsincluding the Archbishop of CanterburyJustin Welby said climate change hasalready hit the poorest of the worldhardest and urgent action is needed nowto protect future generations.

In the newly-launched LambethDeclaration, signatories call on faithcommunities to recognise the pressingneed to make the transition to a lowcarbon economy.

The call comes ahead of the internationalclimate change talks in Paris thisDecember where negotiators from morethan 190 nations will gather to discuss anew global agreement on climate

change, aimed at limiting greenhousegas emissions from 2020 when currentcommitments run out.

The Declaration, signed by theArchbishops of Canterbury and York andother faith leaders in the UK, warns thatworld leaders must agree to reduceemissions to avoid average temperaturesrising beyond 2  C, widely considered tobe the threshold above which it isconsidered that the impacts of climatechange will be most severe.

The Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt RevdNicholas Holtam, the Church ofEngland’s lead bishop on theenvironment said:“The impact of climate change issomething about which all people of faithare concerned. We need to work togetherin order to find our responses to some ofthe most significant moral issues facingthe world.”

Signatories include representatives fromthe Muslim, Sikh and Jewishcommunities as well as the CatholicChurch in England and Wales, MethodistConference and other denominations andfaiths, with more leaders continuing tosign.

Hundreds more people are expected tosign up to the declaration as it travelsrounds the country during a summer ofpilgrimages.
