ASK THE DOCTORWHY DOES HAIR GET THINNER?

The key to growing and maintaining stronger, healthier hair is that the hair growth lifecycle be extended for as long as possible. Miniaturization occurs when the life cycle is interrupted, causing rapid cycling of the follicle, which begins to produce smaller and finer hair. Hence long, pigmented, terminal hair becomes short and fine, weak hair, that may eventually stop growing altogether.

The degree of thinning that an individual experiences can vary due to both external factors, such as stress, exposure to free radicals and UV rays, and internal factors such as aging genetics, health, medication and follicle sensitivity to the hormone Diyhydrotestosterone, or D.H.T. Everyone’s body naturally produces a varying amount of D.H.T.

Androgenetic Alopecia, or “pattern baldness”, occurs in both men and women whose hair follicles are sensitive to D.H.T. (a primary cause of thinning and hair loss).

Typically, hair on the top and front of the head is most sensitive to D.H.T. Over time, this hair will become weaker, finer and may eventually stop growing.
