Therewas a timewhenthe IdahoBotanicalGar-dendid not rock—unlessflowers andherbs are youridea of a good thyme. Buteverything changedwhentheOutlawField SummerConcert Series began in2008with help frompro-moterKnitting Factory.Talk about a garden grow-ing. It took voters a fewyears to push it to the top,but the 4,000-capacity out-door venue finally haswonBestMusicVenue. (Knitting Factory’sDowntownBoise concert housewon this category the last several years.)

The garden’s under-the-sky, bring-a-blanket atmosphere doesn’t hurt.That viewof the Foothills never gets old. Plus, patrons arewelcome tohaul in picnic baskets and low-back chairs. This summer, the gardenhaspumpedup the volumewith a diverse lineup ranging fromshows for theyoung (ImagineDragons,May 21; Fun,Aug. 28) to the young at heart(SteelyDan,Aug. 11;WillieNelson,Aug. 25).

And,of course, let’snot forget about the longstanding, intimateGreatGardenEscapemusic series,whichshowcases local entertainers inside thegardenonThursdays. (“It’s cooler in thegarden,”organizers like to say.)

Aphilanthropist in his spare time, Stigershas created the powerhouse benefitXtremeHolidayXtravaganza,which raisesmoney forInterfaith Sanctuary homeless shelter eachyear.His latest project is theMcCall Jazz Fes-tival,whichhe’s introducing this summer tobenefit the Shepherd’sHome, a shelter carefacility for children inMcCall.He’s alsoworking on creating a project to benefit andsupport professionalmusicians in theTreas-ureValley.

Most theaters these days are as loud, dramaticandover-the-top as themovies that play on theirscreens. Fromextra-cushy reclining chairs to 3-Dgoggles, glitzy lobbies and gut-busting food, theenvironment is asmuch apart of the experienceas themovie itself.

Not atTheFlicks—at least not in an aggres-sive, in-your-faceway.Maybe that’swhy, for thepast four years, readers have votedBoise’s art-house theater the topmovie house.

Since opening its doors in 1984,TheFlicks hasstrived to bedifferent—andnot just bywelcom-ing indie and foreign films on its four screens. Forone thing, beer andwine are served. Thebar isn’t the centerpiece ofTheModern—a reinventedTravelodge—but it’s pretty darn close.The low-lit loungewithmidcentury-moderndesign and the fire-lit patio are desti-nations forBoise cocktail fans.

TheModern earned accolades lastyear fromGQ in a feature story thatlauded the inventions of bespectacledbartenderMichael Bowers andpraised the “ethereal gnocchi.”

Themenuhas no generic cocktails.Instead, there’s the LongWeekend—rum, lime, cucumber, pineapple,mintand soda—and theCaravel,with itscelery bitters, or theHankyPankywith flamedorange.The chowrangesfrombraised oxtail ragout tomac andcheesemadewith kale andherbs.Muchof it is locally sourced.

If there’s a flaw in execution, it’s

that someof the esoteric recipes are,well, esoteric. Youmight endupquizzing your friendly server on thedifference betweenAperol andCampari, or pulling out a smart-phone to lookup “demerara” (a kindof sugar). But hey, it’s all part ofTheModern’s charm.

It should come as no surprise to devotedBest of TreasureValley readers thatMetroExpress added yet another title. Since openingin 2004, it haswiped out its competition in thiscategory.

Metro Express’ original carwash, on the cor-ner of 13th and Front streets inDowntownBoise, is extremely difficult tomiss for anyonedriving on theConnector, especially at night.Its glowing, cool-blue neon sign is easy to see,lighting up the building beneath and pleasantlydrawing glances from the road. Even owners ofspotless cars— thosewithout even a neutrinoof dirt on them—start thinking itmay be timeto choose between theDowntownwash ($7),Uptown ($10) orUptownwith tire gloss ($12).Free vacuums comewith eachwash.

Metro Express nowhas two other locations—one inNampa and one on the corner of PineAvenue andEagleRoad inMeridian. So if

you’re backed up onEagleRoad, instead ofmuttering obscenities at other drivers, swing inand get a quick 5-minute carwash. As a bonus,there’s a great chance your same spot in trafficwill bewaiting for youwhen you get out.

Winter is the predominant season inMcCall, and as the birds instinctivelyhead south towarmer temperatures,TreasureValley skiers and snowboard-ers flock north toBrundageMountainResort. At the doorstep of the BoiseFoothills and under the cross onTableRock, theOld Idaho Peniten-tiary feelsmiles away from reality.

Something is different insidethesewalls— something themindconstantly struggles to figure out asit’s bombarded by the sight of coldsteel bars, varying degrees of darkinteriors and,mostmysterious ofall, the anxious sound of silence.Perhaps it’s the spirits of those im-prisoned here between 1872 and1973, the soulless stone andmetalthat once confined society’s out-casts, or amixture of empathy, pityand fear. You knowno one is lockedup, but there’s a tiny relief gained

by peering into each cell to see itempty.

TheOld Pen is vacant, but eachcell’s character is verymuch alive.Etchings on thewalls of death rowand “Siberia” (solitary confine-ment) plead, cackle and rebel. In an-other cell house, “Molly Lane, 1354Hancock St., Quincy,Mass.” iswrit-ten underneath a bed folded ontothewall, and like aRorschach test,themind stretches to solvewhat itcannot:What didMolly look like?HowareQuincy,Mass., and Idahorelated? Is the address for love let-ters or vengeance?

TheOld Pen affects everyone dif-ferently—some leave and triple-

check tomake sure they’re at leastamile-per-hour under the speedlimit, and others hear the roars ofinmates listening to JohnnyCashsinging “Cocaine Blues” at FolsomPrison.Which one are you?
