EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We are living in the 21st century. It is an era of information technology.
Information technology has touched almost every operations of human being.
Marketing is not an exception to the same. Information technology has a significant
mark over the marketing process
.
Internet has brought revolution in our life and became part and parcel of day to
day activities. It has changed the way we communicate, advertise or gather
information.
This increased importance of internet has given birth to a virtual marketplace.
It is an area where all marketing activities are carried out using internet as a medium
of communication. Organizations can not ignore this virtual marketplace if they want
to sustain this intense competition.
The only way by one can make his presence felt in this virtual market place is
through website, a new mode of advertisement and communication.
My research project “Market Survey For Website Design And Custom
Application Development (CAD) (International)” is aimed to focus on this
emerging market potential.
Deore Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd. is Pune based IT Company. Its main
domain is website design and development. It is also engaged in providing custom
application software to the clients. I have chosen this Company since it provides web
solution to its clients so that their client can mark his presence felt in the virtual
marketplace.
The only reason to select this project topic is to find the market potential in
this new and expanding field. This research will help Deore Consultancy to redesign
its services so that it will satisfy the requirements of potential clients. This project was
focused on international market as there is much scope than in India because of higher
internet usage and increased awareness about e-marketing.
It would take many years to tap the whole International market, so research
work was restricted to the United States of America only. It is the place where
Internet has boomed like anything.
The survey has been carried out for the period of 25th May to 31st July 2007. It
is essential to define time scope since information is dynamic. It changes as the time
passes.
I carried out this research project with the help of Internet. I started with
defining my objectives, sample size, target respondents, etc. A format to collect
relevant data and information was designed. Then collected the information from the
direct mailing and various other sources available on internet. This information is then
analyzed taking into consideration of the set objectives.
At the end of this research project I concluded that almost 60% of the
organizations are interested in having web presence. Most of them want to design new
website. Search engine optimization and online payment option are the important
functionalities required by organizations. Different modes of online advertisement
were suggested to the Company.

The market survey was carried out keeping in mind the following objectives:

1) To find market potential for website designing and custom application

2) To find out market potential for redesigning or revamping of website.
3) To find customer’s requirement for website.
Secondary objectives:
1) To find out significant virtue expected by customers from web designers.
2) To increase the brand awareness of the company.
3) To suggest different modes of online advertisements.
SCOPE
1) The study was conducted for international customers restricted to United States of
America. So findings are restricted to this region only.
2) The project was limited to only Website Design along with Custom Application
Development and not for other services and products offered by the Company.
3) Time span for the project is restricted to two months.
4) The project was carried out for sample size of 50 respondents.

Mr. Ankush Deore, Chairman and Founder-Director of the company with his

Internet has begun to make its presence in Advertising World. In the recent
developments it has been observed that Internet is becoming a major channel of
communication and information. Businesses abroad when start looking for suppliers
search on Internet and contact those who have a web presence. Internet Advertising is
one of the low cost medium of Advertising which helps in targeting domestic as well
as International markets. Various researches indicate that Indians with access to the
Internet spend a considerable percentage of their total media consumption time on the
Internet. It is thus natural that an increasing number of advertisers are keen to
understand the why and how of Internet advertising.
As stated earlier e-marketing is the new concept. It has gained a significant
importance in this Internet savvy world. Without having a strong presence in this
virtual market, it is impossible for any organization to withstand the cutthroat
competition.
Website has emerged as a powerful marketing tool. It can be used as a
medium of advertisement, as a store to display items, as a sales person, or even as a
mode of payment.

A good website must attract the visitors. It should stand apart from the bunch
of other websites for the products of similar category. Page design, colour
combination, navigation, easy and fast loading pages help to attract the people.
It should also be good enough to create interest in the visitors mind. Well
organized data, latest information, latest trends generate interest to continue surfing.
Once the visitor has generated interest, website must stimulate the desire in
visitor’s mind. Discount offers, sale, free gifts help to stimulate such desire.
At the end website must force visitor to take some positive action such as
putting order, asking for price list, sales enquiry, etc.
It is important to have all this characteristics to generate good leads which will
give maximum return on investment.
This project was carried out to tap this lucrative market. Its target audience is
the respondents from United States of America. People of USA are more Internet
savvy. Even most of the organizations in USA spend considerable amount of money
on websites. It has been found that USA based companies use Internet to look for the
professionals who can fulfill their requirements at low price without compromising
with quality. This tendency has given advantage to the professionals to expand their
market at international level. It is the type of service where the service provider need
not meet physically to his client. The service provider can work from his place and
then upload the same on Internet to deliver it to the client.
This project report will help Deore Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd. to know
and understand the requirements of international customers. It will also help them to
develop their expertise to satisfy the demands.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
MARKETING RESEARCH
Marketing research can be broken down into two distinct words- Marketing
and Research. We have to understand each of the two components Marketing and
Research to know what Marketing Research is all about. Marketing is essentially a
sum total of two entities, viz. the target market and the marketing mix for the market,
which in turn is related to actions regarding the four P’s viz. Product, Price, Place and
Promotion. Thus, marketing is some human activity directed at satisfying needs and
wants through exchange process and a modern marketing system cannot exist without
efficient producers and affluent consumers.
Research is an activity solving problem. It is an endeavor to discover, and
develop knowledge aiming for progress. The testing validity of existing phenomena
cannot be possible but for research. Research is, “the manipulation of things, concepts
or symbols for the purpose of generalizing to extend, correct or verify knowledge,
whether that a process involving a series of steps to collect and analyze the
information needed for decision in the desired filed of enquiry. If it is in the field of
sociology it is termed as Social research and if it is in the filed of marketing it is
known as Marketing Research.
From the above definitions, following fundamental characteristics of
marketing research can be derived:-
1. Marketing Research is an objective and systematized body of knowledge.
2. It involves collection, recording, analysis, interpretation and reporting of some
relevant information.
3. Provides more efficient marketing of goods and services to consumers. It is
concerned with problems relating to products, markets and methods of sales
and distribution.
4. Deals with present and potential consumers as well as the changing marketing
environment.
5. Provides regular and reliable information about the product, its market and the
potential consumer to the management so as to chalk out appropriate
marketing strategy.
6. There can be both intra and extra resources for collecting information.
7. It provides information for decision making and to develop new knowledge.
8. Marketing research is an attempt to find justified solutions to marketing
problems.

In this project Market Potential Research and Overseas Market Research was
carried out. The overseas market research was aimed at expansion of the business in
the international market.
RESEARCH DESIGN
“Research design is the plan, structure, and strategy of investigation conceived
so as to obtain answer to research question and to control variance.”
The definition consists of three important terms plan, structure and strategy.
The plan is an outline of the scheme on which the researcher is to work. The structure
of the research is more specific outline or the scheme and the strategy show how the
research will be carried out, specifying the method to be used in the collection and
analysis of the data. From the definition it is thus evident that research design is more
of a blueprint of the research. It can be compared with the plan of house, which lays
down the method and procedure for the collection of requisite information and its
measurement and analysis with a view of arriving at meaningful conclusion at the end
of the proposed study.
Types of research design
It should be remembered that there is no perfect research design. Research
design has been classified under three broad categories as under:
1) Exploratory study
2) Descriptive study
3) Casual study
In the case of exploratory research, the focus is on the discovery of ideas. An
exploratory study is generally based upon the secondary data that are available. It
does not have a formal and rigid design as researcher has to change his focus or
direction, depending upon the availability of new ideas and relationship among
variables. An exploratory study therefore is unable to have a detailed questionnaire.
Since the objective of the study is to generate new ideas, respondents should be given
sufficient freedom to express themselves.
This research study is exploratory study as it has made use of secondary data
which is available on the Internet.
In this market study the primary data was collected from different sources
available on the Internet.
The secondary data is important to support primary data and for further study.
Such data is obtained from already existing source. In this project the secondary data
has been taken from Internet, Business directory, various associations’ published
database, and other such sources in published format.
Primary sources of Data:
Primary data is the data obtained from direct interaction with the respondent.
The primary data is first hand data and it is collected by talking with the respondent.
The primary data can be collected mainly from following types-

Direct mail etc.
The primary source of data used in this project is Direct mail. The data was
collected by sending direct mail to potential customers asking them regarding their
requirements for website. Other method used made use of the online bidding sites
where respondents have placed their requirements.
Secondary source of Data:
Secondary data is the data collected through indirect means. The secondary
data is not first hand data and it is already available in some form. The main sources
of secondary data are-

The secondary source of data in this project was the Internet. Online bidding
sites, tender sites were surfed for collecting the data. These are the sites where
respondents have posted their projects with details of requirements
Sample Description:
Sampling is the method of selecting a sample from the given universe with
view to draw conclusions about the universe. Sample means representative of
universe selected for the study. The sampling plan can be broadly divided into two
types.
Probability Sampling
Non-Probability Sampling
In Probability Sampling every unit in the sample size has an equal opportunity
of getting selected.
In Non-Probability sampling every sample unit in the sample size
does not have an equal chance of selection. There is some bias during the selection of
sample unit.
These two sampling techniques are further subdivided into various types.
I used non-probability sampling technique. I collected the responses from 30
respondents and used this for data interpretation.
Marketing Segmentation
The market was segmented on the basis of geographic area. For this research
project only the respondents from United State of America were considered.

FINDINGS
Following are the findings that have came out of this research.
12) As the percentage suggests that around 60% of the respondents have need for
website to promote their business.
13) Most of the respondents (36%) want website for the purpose of advertisement.
Selling products online and providing online services are the purposes for 17%
of the total respondents. To display product information is the reason why 7%
of the total respondents require website. While only 2% of the total
respondents are interested in having just web presence.
14) Out of the 60% respondents who have requirement for web solutions, 87%
want to design new website where as 13% are interested in redesigning their
existing website.
15) Though 36% of the total respondents look for 6 to 10 pages website 27% and
23% of the total respondents look for website having 11 to 20 and 4 to 5 pages
respectively. Respondents who are interested in having more than 21 pages or
just 1 to 3 pages in their website contribute to 7% of the total respondents
each. This information is needed to calculate the potential revenue that could
be expected form the prospective client.
16) Almost all the respondents want submittal form facility with their website.
Only 16.66% are interested in incorporating shopping cart facility.
17) As 33% of the total respondents require data base, 57% of the total
respondents do not. 10% of the total respondents are not sure about keeping
data base.
18) Figures show that 33% of the respondents want online payment facility.
19) Majority of the respondents are not aware about the programming languages
used for designing website as they constitute to about 70%. 20% of the total
respondents are programming language specific compared to 10% of those
who are not.
20) 10% of the total respondents insist on search engine optimization as 3%
strictly say no for the same. Around 87% of the total respondents are not
aware about search engine optimization.
21) Before developing website 27% of the total respondents have considered
international customers as audience for their website. Remaining 7% have
targeted domestic customers for their website. Whereas 66% respondents
targeted both domestic and International customers as target audience.
22) Fast delivery and high quality are the main priorities for almost all the
respondents to select their service provider. However only 3% of the total
respondents are ready to pay higher price for the same. 84% of the total
respondents want it to be get done at low price. 13% of the total respondents
will pay moderate price for website.
LIMITATIONS
No project is ideal. In reality the researcher always comes across different
problems which act as limitations of the project.
Though I tried to complete this research with utmost care there are some
limitations to this research work. These limitations are listed below.
23) Biased reply of the respondent:
This is the major limitation faced by all researchers. Respondents always tend
to give biased response to the questions asked. They are influenced by various
external factors such as: friends or family member interfering with his opinion.
24) Non availability of data or other relevant information:
Sometimes respondents do not give correct responses as they do not have that
data with them. In such cases they tend to give wage responses.
25) Respondent was busy:
Proper selection of respondents is very crucial. If we select a respondent who
is very busy with his daily schedule then it very difficult to get his time for
interview. However since in this research I did not interviewed any respondent
face to face I did not face this problem. Still there were cases where
respondents did not get time to reply to emails.
26) Time constraint ( 2 months):
Time constraint is one of the major limitations a research project has. Whether
to have a website or not is a strategic design of marketing personnel he may
take more than 2 months of time period which is fixed for this project. So the
responses of such respondents can not be considered and are not considered
for this project.
27) Budget constraints:
Since this research is carried out for potential International customers budget
was the most limiting factor. This has eliminated the option of taking face to
face interview or even a telephonic interview. So I decided to use direct mail
and bidding or tender sites to gather the responses.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the data analysis, findings, and conclusion following are the
recommendations to Deore Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd.
Every organization has its own specific requirements and thus Deore
Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd. should concentrate on providing tailor made web
solutions.
Maintenance of website is as important as designing a website. Company
should give free maintenance for a period of couple of months to one year, so that the
Company will retain customers for long time. It will help the Company to create loyal
customer base.
As the submittal forms are required by almost all people. Company should
offer this facility free of cost. This will attract more customers.
People are not aware about search engine optimization. If the Company takes
initiative and spread awareness about the same and convince people, Company could
be able to harvest a huge amount of revenue by providing search engine optimization
service.
Encouraging people to sell their products and services online will help the
Company to get big budget projects with online payment facility. It will increase
company’s profit margin.
It has been found that international customers search on Internet to look for a
professional. The online advertisement methods that Deore Consultancy Services can
use are
28) Registering the company to various directories available online for the web
development category.
29) Registering the company with online bidding site or with online tender sites like
guru.com, tendernews.com, tenderzeal.com.
30) Direct mailing campaigns will help to spread awareness about the company.
CONCLUSION
This market survey for website design and Custom Application Development
was carried out for the potential customers of international market.
From the analysis of the collected data, it has been found that. there is
tremendous opportunity in the international market to provide website development
services.
Though most of the organizations want to develop new website, there are
considerable amount of organizations who want to redesign or revamp their existing
website. This could be taken as an opportunity to take a bite in competitor’s market
share. If the Company could provide the quality service at reasonable price, Company
may get a chance to redesign the existing websites or carry out maintenance of
websites. It will ensure fix revenue over long period of time.
The research shows that most of the people want to have web presence. They
look to develop a new website for advertisement purpose with 6 to 10 pages. Almost
all people ask for submittal forms. Data base and online payment facility are not very
popular and required by certain people. There is little awareness about search engine
optimization and programming language.
People want to target international audience through websites.
When it comes to select a professional it has been found that people look for a
professional who can provide services at low cost over fast delivery and high quality.
