CLASS OF *24 REUNION On Tuesday morning, June 16, a re- union of the senior class of 1924 will be held. Arrangements have been made to have a class breakfast at the Warm Friend Tavern. A unique pro- gram has been arranged. All those who plan to attend the first reunion of the class of '24, are requested to notify Miss W. Zwemer before or on June 10. o— ALUMNI BANQUET Elaborate plans have been made by the Hope College Alumni Associa- tion for the holding of their annual banquet at the Warm Friend Tavern. Speakers have been arranged for from the list of Alumni members. Thru the special efforts of Professor Paul Hin- kamp, secretary of the Alumni Asso- ciation,, it will be possible to carry out these plans. A large crowd of Alumni members are expected. On the evening of June 5th the Doriian Sisters, Alumnae, and guests celebrated their fourth annual ban- quet at The Warm Friend Tavern. It was a warm evening, but all hearts and hopes seemed to be in a joyful tune. Hecause June is the month of roses, -and other pretty blossoms, an artistic flower scheme was carried out. The tables were decorated with flowers and beautiful bouquets were placed about the room. During the dinner, which consisted of a choice menu, the Van Wyke Orchestra from Grand Rapids flavored the feasters with many fine selections. Thoughts were then turned to an- other part of the evening's program. Miss Hilda Nyland was toastmistress. and in her clever way, she introduc- ed each speaker. Miss Anne Voskuil toasted "To the June Knights". Fol- lowing this. Miss Cynthia Buehler de- lighted the assembly with her musical reading. "Counting Daisy Petals". . ! - • i v. Francis Tate toasted "For-get-me- nots" to the alumnae. She beoutiful- ly expressed the thought that for- get-me-nots stand for remembrance and pleasant memories of by-gone days. "Garden Secrets" was toasted by Alice Van Hattem. She said that the garden represents the life of a Hope College girl; and the different flowers in the garden teach valuable lessons of patience, loyalty, consist- ency, and opportunity. Delia Vander Kolk, in tan interesting way toasted to "The Spirit of June." Nella Tanis sang two vocal selections. Last, but not least, Harriet Vander Meer toasted to the "Flower of Hope". This flower is the Hope spirit itself, which includes loyalty, kindness, humility, virtue, and other fine qual- ities. The happy evening closed with the Dorian song in which all joined heartily. The Dorians were very glad to have as their guest of honor, their true friend. Miss Boyd. The commencement exercises of the class of 1925 of Hope College, will be held In the Carnegie Hall on Wed- nesday, June 17, 1925. At that time, ninety-five graduates will receive their bachelor degrees and a few honorary degrees will be conferred upon some of the alumni. Miss Marian Van Vessem of Zee- land, Michigan, will present her val- edictory and the other class speakers include: Clarence Lubbers of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, Harriet Vander Bos of Holland. Michigan,- Josh Hogen- boom of Clymer. N. Y., and Raymond C. Van Zoeren of Holland. Michigan. Soloists and a mixed choir of the class will add to the program by pre- senting appropriate music. The college alumni who are to re- ceive their masters degree will include the students who graduated in 1922 and have taken up advanced scholas- tic work. A number of prizes will be awarded to the winners of various de- bating. oratory and essay contests. The exercises will mark the divis- ion of the class into several varied lines. Some of the students will pur- sue advanced work at larger schools and still others will teach for a time. Four of the graduates will go to Ja- pan for short terms to carry on re- ligious work. Thus Hope's largest graduating class will contribute their energy toward the accomplishment of worthy tasks. Rev. William IT. S. Demarest, presi- dent-elect of New Brunswick Seminary and former president of Rutgers College has been booked to preach the baccalaureate sermon to the class of 1925 at Hope College, Sunday ev- ening. June 14. This will be the open- ing event of commencement week. ATTENTION FRATERNAL ALUMNI The annual Fraternal Ban- quet will be held on June 12 in the Warm Friend Tavern. Will all the Fraters who plan to attend kindly notify the secretary,' John H. Al- bers at 254 College Avenue., Holland Michigan. The degree of Bachelor of Divinity was conferred upon Rev. Henry VanEyck Stegeman of Holland, a graduate of Hope in 1912 and of Western Theo- logical Seminary in 1917. Rev. Stege- man's thesis was based on the sub- ject, "The Eschatology of Jesus in Relation to Current Jewish Eschato- logical Thought." In appreciation of the generally ex- pressed desire of the students to have Dr. Patterson remain In his position as biology teacher, the following com- munication was sent to the .student Council. It la hoped that arrange- ments can be made to keep Dr. Pat- terson.: The Student Council of Hope College: Dear Students:— I want you to know how very grate- ful I am to you for your too kind let- ter of appreciation of my services as teacher and friend. I do not merit all the nice things you say of me, yet I do love you all, and I have heen most happy with you during these six- teen and one-half years. If anything could melt my selfish heart It would be your loyalty to me, and your desire to have me stay. As yet the way has not been opened for me to stay. I a m no more anxious to leave Hope Col- lege than you are to have me leave. I am glad It Is so, though It will make it hard to part. I consider it the greatest achieve- ment of my life to have won your es- teem and affection. It has been worth any price I have paid. The one prayer of my heart, when I think of Hope College, will ever be, "God bless Hope College students." Your friend, F. N. PATTERSON. o— CHAPEL CHIMES On Monday, June 8, Miss Martha Barkema delighted the students with two snature songs. The Chapel ser- vices were In charge of Dr. MacDonald of Detroit. On Saturday evening, June 6th, the memheis of Delphi entertained their guests at the Warm Friend Tavern at seven o'clock. After a delicious supper. Miss Jean Kuyper, toastmistress introduced Miss Geraldine Dykhulzen. who toasted to Hope. We are all vagabonds, whether we be Dutch or Irish, or whether we come from China or Cyprus. "Come, choose your road and away, away, we'll follow the gypsy sun." Anne and Martha Barkema sang a very lovely duet "June Magic," fol- lowing which Clarissa (Snoopy) Pop- pen toasted to Delphi—a company of warm hearted friends, working for the best In life. A sextette composed of Cornle Nettlnga, Henrietta Beyers, Polly Schutt, Anne Barkema, Edna Reeverts and Alice Scholten, sang just before Lillian Schmid's toast to Men— the guests of Delphi—true Romany gold. Two Alumnae , Miss Sue Hamellnk, and Miss Pearl Paalman were the next two entertainers, the former on the piano, and the latter with her voice. They are both as good as ever and were thoroughly appreciated. Miss Amanda Zwemer was the last to toast, and she toasted to the Fu- ture. The flames of the g y p s y fire are burning low, they are almost out, and the blue smoke curtains with silken mist the future. The banquet was closed by singing the Delphi son. The guests of honor were Mrs. Dyk- hulzen and Mr. Walvoord. : DROPS GAME TO FERRIS NINE ORANGE AND BLUE LOSE I N T H E NINTH INNING The Hope baseball fans were much disappointed last Saturday when the Ferris team recovered a six point lead and finally won the game from Hope, 11-9, on the Hope grounds. W e h a d a comfortable lead until the last inning when Ferris got four runs a n d a t w o point lead. It is quite safe to say that the game should have been ours. Cole and Albers did good work on the mound, but the support was rath- er poor. There was considerable hit- ting done by both teams, but Ferris had the slight edge on Hope. Score by Innings— . A fair-sized crowd greeted the participants in spite of the extremely warm weather. The Interesting pro- gram, consisting of vocal and piano solos by students of M^s. Fenton and Mr. Cress, was very well arranged by Dr. Nykerk. All of the pupils dis- played a skill and artistry which •peaks most highly for our School of Music. The audience was disappoint- ed that Miss Henrietta Kelzer, one of the most advanced pupils, was in New York and could not appear.
