I. Methods of Locating Acupuncture Points (), ( ) () . . , , . At the present time, methods which are commonly used on clinics are anatomical landmarks, propo rtional measurement and finger measurement. These three methods are usually used in combinatio n, for example, using the anatomical landmarks as the first step, we then divide the body respective ly into fixed numbers of equal units, and then use finger measurements to determine the location of acupuncture points. (1) , , . , . () () . 1) : (, , , , ), , , , 2) : , (: , , ) . (1) Anatomical landmark Thus refers to the locating acupoints based on various anatomical landmarks on the bodysurfac e. Those landmarks fall into two categories: fixed landmarks and moving landmarks. 1) Fixed landmarks include prominence and depression of the bones, the five sense organs, hair, nails(toes), nipple and umbilicus, etc. 2) Moving landmarks refer to gaps, depressions, creases and tips that will appear only when joins, muscle, tendons and skin of the body move. For example, Baekhoe(GV can be located at the inte ) 20 rsection between the midline of the head and the line connecting the apexes of both ears. When the index fingers and thumbs of both hands are crossed with the index fingers of one hand placed on th e styloid process of the radius of the other, Yeolgyeol(LU can be located under the tip of the inde ) 7

x finger. When the flexed knee is covered with the hand, Hyeolhae(SP can be located under the ti ) 10 p of the thumb in the medial side. (2) . . (2) Proportional Measurement Proportional measurement means the width or length of various portions of the human body. Th ey are divided respectively into definite numbers of equal units as the standards for the proporti onal measurement. This is based on proportional measurement provided in Miraculous Pivot an d associated with the equal division measurement created by the past scholars (divide the part be tween two bone joints into several equal parts, 1 chon for each, 10 equal parts is 1 chon) ~ 12

(3) Finger Measurement The length and width of the patient's finger are taken as a standard for point selection. 1) Middle Finger Measurement When the patient's middle finger is flexed, the distance between the two medial ends of the crea se of the interphalangeal joints is taken as one chon. 2) Thumb Measurement The width of the four fingers (index, middle, ring and little) close together at the level of the dor sal skin crease of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger is taken as three chon. Methods of locating points are based on standard measurements. An acupuncturist should first o f all have a clear idea of these measurements and the patient's body build, and then use some si mple moving landmarks on the patient for locating acupoints.
