TECHNICAL MANUAL PRESENTATION
Equipment configuration
IRIS can be equiped with a VRAD card and/or a pLINES box.
This publication corresponds to the following configuration:
� IRIS equipped with VRAD card,
� IRIS equipped with pLINES.
Audience and information level
This manual is intended for the maintenance team having followed a training courseapproved by THALES.
It presents the procedures required to maintain the equipment in operational state andalso serves as reference for its use and the good understanding of its operation.
The whole description of the technical manual is limited at the required level ofmaintenance.
Organisation
This manual is organized in six chapters, as follows:
Chapter 0, "Foreword", gives an outline of this manual with the list of abbreviations, tableof contents and list of figures.
Chapter 1, "General Description", physically describes the equipment to identify itscomponents which removal is necessary by the required maintenance level, gives itscharacteristics and its composition down to the Line Replaceable Units (LRU).
Chapter 2, "Functional description", describes the functions of the equipment.
Chapter 3, "Setting−up and operation", describes installation instructions, switching−on and switching−off procedures and how to use of the equipment.
Chapter 4, "Preventive maintenance", describes the periodic procedures of cleaningand control of the good functioning.
Chapter 5, "Corrective maintenance", describes the fault localisation procedures andthe corrective procedures to repair or replace the faulty element to return the equipmentto the operational mode. These procedures consist mainly of removal−replacementand adjustment procedures.
Symbols in text
These symbols may be found in the text of this manual. They have the following mea-nings.
This warning symbol means danger. The maintenance technician is in a situation thatcould cause bodily injury. Before maintenance team work on any equipment, techni-
cian must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry, radio frequency,rotating equipment and high elevation work. It is necessary to be familiar with the pro-cedures usually used to avoid the accidents and to consult safety instructions added
to this manual.

GENERAL
Introduction to the equipment
The Indicator of Radar Information System (IRIS) consists of a Personal Computer (PC)running on a Linux Operating System, and equipped with:
� a configured central unit (see Figure 1−1)
� a display unit, a keyboard and a mouse (see Figure 1−2)
� a pLINES box (see Figure 1−3)

Associated equipment
The IRIS station is connected to (see Figure 1−4) a switching box and an Ethernet LAN.

Switching box
Through a switching box, the IRIS receives radar video information. The switching boxallows the following signals to be switched in:
� radar video analogue and digital signals,
� radar video trigger,
� radar north pulse/increments.
Ethernet LAN
Through Ethernet LAN, the IRIS station receives radar tracks information.
pLINES box
pLINES equipment allows to receive radar Air Traffic Control data outputs by connectingATCC serial lines outputs to pLINES box.

Configured computer
The configured central unit consists of:
� a PC central unit,
� a video radar card (VRAD card) (item 3 (see Figure 1−5)), with its associatedcable.

A graphic card (item 1 (see Figure 1−5)) and a ETHERNET card (item 2 (seeFigure 1−5)) are also plugged in two PCI slots of the the configured central unit.

PC central unit
The PC central unit have the following minimum characteristics:
� a CPU with a performance id > 500 spec Int 2000,
� one AGP bus and two interconnection PCI bus,
� a RAM memory with 256 MB capacity,
� a hard drive with 40 GB capacity (minimum capacity), with the necessary soft-ware,
� an Ethernet 10/100 Base T interface (on PCI bus),
� a graphics interface on AGP bus.
VRAD card
The VRAD card is plugged into a PCI slot in the PC and provides an interface to surveil-lance radar with:
� a north reference pulse (ARP),
� increments (ACP),
� trigger,
� analogue and digital video signals.
The radar video signal is received by the VRAD card and undergoes the following opera-tions:
� digital encoding of the analogue signal,
� transfer to the CPU,
� conversion of the digitized signal to a pixel image which is transferred to the gra-phics interface for display.
The radar maintenance software allows the user to set all necessary parameters in orderto display the best possible radar video image.
The VRAD card has two connectors:
� an HD15 connector,
� and a DB25 connector.
The VRAD card is connected to the switching box by a cable terminated by HD 15 andBNC connectors.

STORAGE CONDITIONS
Storage time
Maximum IRIS storage time is greater than 5 years.
Dry cell batteries
Dry cell batteries contained in the computer: 2 years. Beyond this time period, it isrecommended to replace it before using the equipment. In this case, they must be repla-ced in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
PC
It is recommended to switch on the stored PC every 5 years to optimize the cycle lifeof capacitors.
Monitor
Maximum monitor storage time is greater than 10 years.
A suitable reactivation procedure is to be implemented after long term storage (> 5years). In this case, observe the manufacturer’s recommendations.

MAIN FUNCTIONS
General
IRIS perform the display of air situation, made up of radar data
Operational functions
The operational functions of IRIS relate to the video display and radar maintenance.
For details of these functions and their user interface, refer to the Software User Manual.
Maintenance function
Internal maintenance is characterized by the Built−in Tests which are run at IRIS start−up.
These tests relate to the central unit (except the monitor, keyboard and mouse) and theradar video interface equipment.
As regards the VRAD card tests are initiated at start−up. These tests check the cardstatus. A green Light Emitting Diode (LED) at the rear (connector side) of the card comeson if the tests are successful. The green LED goes off if the tests fail.

Installation of IRIS central unit (PC)
Step Action
1 Connect the keyboard, the mouse, the monitor in accordance with themanufacturer’s documentation.
2 Define the IRIS software parameters with use of IRIS Software UserManual (SUM) (menu: Controlling the system/Configure the system), withthe initial values which have been logged in the installation file.

PLINES BOX CONNECTION
General
The pLINES box provides multi−protocol serial communication to interface serial datato the Ethernet LAN.
The pLINES box is connected to:
� the Configured Computer by a network cable (see note) on ETH0, ETH1 or ETH2connector.
� radar ATCC serial outputs by a serial line.
This cable is a "straight cable".
The Ethernet connector of pLINES box is described in the table hereafter:

INITIAL SETTING−UP AND OPERATION
Initial setting−up
Refer to the manufacturer’s documentation for the installation before starting up thesystem.
After connecting the various components of the IRIS central unit, perform the followingsteps in order to start up the station:

1 Switch on the monitor.
2 Switch on the pLINES box.
3 Switch on the computer.
During the self−test, the LED (green) on the VRAD−PCI card blinks. After the self−test, and if the VRAD−PCI is functioning correctly, the LED stays on a few seconds. In
the case of an anomaly, the led stays off.
To check, select the video test pattern command in the software interface (see IRISMaintenance Display General troubleshooting).

Purpose
The purpose of preventive maintenance is to verify the correct performance of the equip-ment and to ensure its cleanliness.
Abnormalities and mismatching will be detected during routine maintenance or duringbuilt−in tests of the radar system.

Start−up built−in tests
Internal maintenance is characterized by the built−in tests which are run at IRIS start−up.
These tests concern the PC (except the monitor, keyboard and mouse) and the VRADcard.
As regards the VRAD card off−line tests are initiated at start−up. These tests checkcard status. A green LED at the rear (connector side) of the card comes on if the testsare successful. The green LED goes off if the tests fail.
In case of a fault message:
Step Action
1 Analyse the fault message and record it in a LOG BOOK.
2 Check that the PC and peripheral are correctly power supplied.
3 Reboot the IRIS workstation as follows:
� switch off the unit,
� wait for 5 seconds,
� switch on the PC.
4 If abnormal operation occurs again, execute the maintenance operationsindicated by the anomaly message.
5 Diagnose faulty mouse or keyboard operation by inspection or exchange.In the case of the exchange of an LRU, switch off the workstation, removethe faulty LRU and install a new one. Then switch on the power to theworkstation.

� remove the defective LRU and replace it with a new one,
� switch on the workstation,
� check that the LED (green) on the VRAD card (at rear of computer)blinks and then stays on for several seconds. If in doubt, select thevideo test pattern in the software interface; the LED will come on aftertwenty seconds.
On−line test
An on−line test, with generation of a test pattern, is also offered:

1 Select the "Radar Data" menu in the control window. Refer to IRIS UserManual.
2 To start or stop the radar video test pattern, left click on the "Radar videotest" button (disabled by default). This pattern is used to check the VRADequipment’s correct operation.

This procedure has to be performed when the configured computer has been replacedor the IRIS software changed or upgraded.
ASTERIX category 34 configuration
To succeed this operation, the user shall be familiar with Linux and "vi" editor.
Depending on the type of the radar configuration used, it should be necessary tochange a parameter in the aero.conf file.
This parameter indicates the size (in byte) of the item 034/050.
The default value is "6" which corresponds to an item 034/050 with all sub−fields (COM,PSR, SSR and MDS).
For a stand−alone Mode S radar the sub−fields transmitted should be COM and MDScorresponding to a value size of 4 bytes.
For a Mode S + PSR radar the sub−fields transmitted should be COM, PSR and MDScorresponding to a value size of 5 bytes.
The following table gives the size of 034/050 according the radar configuration:

1 Do a CTRL+x to open an xterm window.
2 Enter VRADPCI as password.
3 Enter: cd IRIS_CURRENT/DATA/config
4 Edit the aero.conf file: vi aero.conf
5 Search the string "LongueurItemAst034_050:X" where X is the size value ofthe item 034/050.
6 Replace this value X by the correct value size.
7 Save the file.
8 Do a complete stop of IRIS by quitting the software and switching off.
9 Restart the IRIS.
Radar rotation speed configuration
To succeed this operation, the user shall be familiar with Linux and "vi" editor.
Depending on the type of the radar rotation speed, it should be necessary to changea parameter in the aero.conf file.
This parameter indicates the delay for track ageing.
The default value is "6 seconds" which corresponds to a rotation speed of 4 or 5seconds per scan.
We advise to set a value 20 to 50% higher than the radar scan duration.
Example: set 12 for a radar scan duration of 10 seconds.
To change this value:

� The ACP/ARP cable between the switching box and the connector DB25 of theVRAD card (on the configured computer).
