I am grateful to the authority of  Bharthidasan University, for having given me an opportunity to under go the Ph.D. programme. My sincere thanks are due to the Management, Cauvery College for Women and  Dr. V. Sujatha, M.Com., M.Phil., Ph.D.,  Principal, Cauvery College for Women, Trichy, for having permitted me to undergo the course in the Department of Commerce. I express my deep sense of gratitude to my learned and beloved supervisor and Guide  Dr. V. Gomathi, M.Com., M.Phil., Ph.D.,  Head, Department of Commerce, Cauvery College for Women, Trichy, without whose guidance, encouragement, supervision and moral support, this work would not have been possible. She has been the prime personality in providing me all possible assistance at every stage by sparing much of her precious time. The present study is an inevitable outcome of her valuable comments. timely assistance in going through the draft thesis and for the constructive

suggestions given, all along the way.

I wish to express my deep sense of gratitude to my parents, brothers and

my husband Mr. J. Lenin, M.A., B.L., for their contribution in the completion

of the thesis. Without their encouragement and help, this work would not have

 been completed. I would like to express my special thanks to my daughter L.
