Greetings and Salutations

Hope to reach you in great spirits. Although things are looking on the downside as it worries me to pen down the sad tale, trouble times of the aviation industry shall pass away, as I hope and pray.

Our cover story this month talks about the Trujet – The odyssey of four Years .Trujet is the only successful standing airline amongst the regional airlines that started operations around the same time. Says Mr. K V Pradeep Director Trujet. Aviation Update congratulates the 700+ staff of airline to make this happen.

However, not everything is down the hill. Recent advancements in the aviation sphere have made me happy all the way. In this edition of Aviation update, you will be able to find all the latest happening updates on Indian skies as well as global skies. You can stay updated on the latest happenings in the field of defence and military aviation through Aviation Update’s dedicated section on the same.

To sum up, there’s a perfect balance of odd and even that is true and vital to each system on the planet Nevertheless, somehow I still feel a strong urge to call upon the forerunners and the champions of aviation industry to come together. This is a time when corporations and individuals at large should be willing to join hands by keeping aside their differences. Only then we will be able to bring out the very best of aviation; the industry we hold so dear.

CATHAY PACIFIC COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF HONG KONG EXPRESS AIRWAYS

C athay Pacific announces that it has completed the acquisition of Hong

Kong Express Airways (HK Express). HK Express is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathay Pacific.Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Officer and HK Express Chairman Rupert Hogg said: “We are very excited to welcome HK Express into the group. We strongly believe that the acquisition is good for the travelling public, good for HK Express, good for the Cathay Pacific Group, and good for the development of Hong Kong as a global aviation hub.

“HK Express will continue to operate as a stand-alone airline using the low-cost carrier business model. I would also like to reassure HK Express customers that there is no change to the airline’s operating model and that business will continue as usual. There will be more value fares and more destinations available to travellers.

“We look forward to working with the HK Express teams to ensure a smooth transition and to continue to grow the airline in order to better serve its customers.”

Leading the HK Express team as CEO is Ronald Lam who has worked with the Cathay Pacific Group and HAECO for more than twenty years, most recently as Cathay Pacific Director Commercial & Cargo.

Mr Hogg explained that the acquisition of HK Express is an attractive and practical way for the Cathay Pacific Group to develop and grow its aviation business over the long term, while also enhancing the competitiveness of its Hong Kong home base as a leading aviation hub.

He said: “Our respective businesses and business models are largely complementary. HK Express captures a unique market segment that, together with the extensive network offered by the Cathay Pacific Group, could multiply connection opportunities through Hong Kong. This will bring tremendous benefits to the travelling public with more choices and greater convenience for their travel experience.”

BOEING INTRODUCES JEPPESEN MOBILE QUICKCLEAR APPLICATION FOR PILOTS

Boeing has introduced a new digital application, Jeppesen Mobile

QuickClear. This application, created in partnership with Airside Mobile for encryption and data management services, simplifies the international clearance process with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for pilots.

“Mobile QuickClear helps pilots manage the entire customs process in one place,” said William Ampofo, vice president of Business & General Aviation, Boeing Global Services. “Improving their efficiency by enabling easier access to required clearance information.”

Working seamlessly with the popular Mobile Passport app, used already by more than seven million commercial passengers today, Mobile QuickClear securely collects passport information to relay it to the CBP agents via Mobile QuickClear for a seamless Advanced Passenger Information System manifest clearance process.

The launch of Mobile QuickClear also expands the capability of the existing Mobile Passport app to now include passengers of private aircraft in addition to commercial airlines, and is expected to reduce clearance errors and related consequences such as fines or penalties on air travelers by up to 30%.

The development of Mobile QuickClear received support from strategic partners, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), to obtain pilot perspectives and feedback. “Innovative applications like Mobile QuickClear are critical for the future of aviation,” said Mark Baker, president and CEO of AOPA. “Simplifying the international customs

process will give more time back to pilots to focus on other tasks and enhance the flying experience.”

Mobile QuickClear will be available on Apple’s iOS app store later this month. Passengers will notice the Mobile QuickClear option on both iOS and Android in the Mobile Passport app, available today in the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

BOEING REPORTS SECOND-QUARTER RESULTS

The Boeing Company has reported second-quarter revenue of US$15.8

billion, GAAP net loss of (US$2.9) billion, loss per share of (US$5.21) and core loss per share (non-GAAP) of (US$5.82), reflecting the previously announced 737 MAX charge (which reduced revenue by US$5.6 billion and earnings by US$8.74 per share) as well as lower 737 deliveries partially offset by higher defense and services volume. Boeing recorded operating cash flow of (US$0.6) billion and paid US$1.2 billion of dividends.

The previously issued 2019 financial guidance does not reflect 737 MAX impacts. Due to the uncertainty of the timing and conditions surrounding return to service of the 737 MAX fleet, new guidance will be issued at a future date. Boeing is working very closely with the FAA on the process they have laid out to certify the 737 MAX software update and safely return the MAX to service. Disciplined development and testing is underway and Boeing said it will submit the final software package to the FAA once they have satisfied all of their certification requirements. Regulatory authorities will determine the process for certifying the MAX software and training updates as well as the timing for lifting the grounding order.

Boeing also reported that the 777X program is progressing well through pre-flight testing. While the company is still targeting late 2020 for first delivery of the 777X, there is significant risk to this schedule given engine challenges, which are delaying first flight until early 2020.

Commercial Airplanes backlog remains healthy with more than 5,500 airplanes valued at US$390 billion.

Boeing announced that it has dedicated $50 million of a previously announced

$100 million fund to provide near-term financial assistance to families of the victims of the Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Flight 302 accidents. Boeing also announced that it has retained Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros, renowned experts in establishing and overseeing victims’ compensation funds, to design and administer the fund.

“The tragic loss of life in both accidents continues to weigh heavily on all of us at Boeing, and we have the utmost sympathy for the loved ones of those on board,” said Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing chairman, president and CEO. “Through our partnership with Feinberg and Biros, we hope affected families receive needed assistance as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

The $50 million fund represents the initial expenditure of a $100 million pledge by Boeing to address family and community needs of those affected by the accidents. All monies distributed by Mr. Feinberg and Ms. Biros will be independent from any resolution provided through the legal process.

“We are honored to take on this important assignment of providing needed financial relief to the families of these two tragedies,” added Kenneth Feinberg.

according to list prices. Along with an agreement to lease 10 additional 787-10 jets from Air Lease Corporation, the carrier will quadruple its Dreamliner fleet as it looks to bring greater efficiency and passenger comforts to its operations.

Korean Air, one of the largest transpacific carriers in Asia with 16 non-stop routes to North America, is adding the 787-10 to its long-haul fleet to complement its existing 787-9 and 777 airplanes.

“As we continue to innovate our product offering, the 787 Dreamliner family will become the backbone of our mid-and long-haul fleet for many years to come,” said Walter Cho, Chairman of Korean Air. “In addition to 25 percent improved fuel efficiency, the stretched 787-10 offers around 15 percent more space for passengers and cargo than our 787-9s, which will be critical to our long-term business goals.”

Korean Air announced its commitment to order the 20 Dreamliner jets and lease 10 more at the Paris Air Show in June. The airline plans to deploy the 787-10 on medium-range routes, while continuing to leverage the longer-range capabilities of the 787-9 Dreamliner on long-haul flights.

“As Korean Air celebrates a half-century of excellence in flight, they have earned the respect and admiration of the global aviation community. We are honored to partner with them again as they build out a world-class fleet of airplanes for their next 50 years,” said Ihssane Mounir, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “With the 747-8, 777 and now the 787 Dreamliner family, Korean Air operates one of the most efficient and comprehensive widebody fleets in the world.”

BRITISH AIRWAYS TAKES DELIVERY OF ITS FIRST A350-1000

B ritish Airways (BA) has taken delivery of its first A350-1000 at Airbus

headquarters in Toulouse, France, making it the first operator of the larger A350-1000 in International Airlines Group (IAG). In total, BA has ordered 18 A350-1000s. Iberia, which is also part of IAG, already operates five of the smaller A350-900s.

BA’s A350 XWB with its modern and comfortable Airspace cabin will usher in new levels of comfort with the launch of the Club Suite, the first new business class seat for British Airways in 13 years. The airline’s sophisticated and newly-branded “Club Suite” offers direct-aisle access, a suite door for greater privacy and luxurious flat-bed seats in a 1-2-1 configuration.

The three-class layout includes 56 Club Suites, 56 World Traveller Plus and 219 World Traveller economy seats.

BA, celebrating its 100th anniversary, will initially use the aircraft to fly between London and Madrid prior to flying long-haul routes from September.

BA operates a fleet of over 150 Airbus aircraft from the smallest A318 to the largest A380.

EMBRAER DELIVERS 26 COMMERCIAL AND 25 EXECUTIVE JETS IN 2Q19

Embraer delivered a total of 51 jets in the second quarter of 2019 (2Q19), of

which 26 were commercial aircraft and 25 were executive jets (19 light and 6 large). As of June 30th, the firm order backlog totaled USD 16.9 billion compared to USD 16.0 billion at the end of 1Q19. Embraer’s 2Q19 backlog increase is largely due to continued market demand, mainly for the new family of Praetor jets in Executive Aviation.

In the second quarter, Embraer received the Type Certificate for the E195-E2 from three regulatory authorities: ANAC, the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil); the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). The

E195-E2 is the largest of the three members of the E-Jets E2 family of Embraer commercial airplanes.

In the beginning of the 2Q19, Embraer signed a firm order for 10 E195-E2 jets with Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline. The contract includes purchase rights for a further 20 E195-E2s. With all purchase rights being exercised, the contract has a value of USD 2.12 billion.

In the executive aviation segment, Embraer received the Type Certificate for the new Praetor 600 super-midsize business jet by the three main world regulatory agencies: ANAC, the FAA, and EASA. The first Praetor 600 was delivered in June to an undisclosed European customer.

Following its successful debut at the 53rd International Paris Air Show, Embraer’s

newest Profit Hunter – the E195-E2 showcasing a stunning “TechLion” livery that covers the entire aircraft’s fuselage – will now begin its global demo tour. The first stop has been Xiamen, China, on July 8th, followed by several stops within China and Asia Pacific during the months of July and August. At each stop, Embraer will show the aircraft’s efficiency and quiet cabin. The E195-E2 is the largest of the three aircraft in the E-Jets E2 family.

In November 2018, the E190-E2 traveled

almost half of China and successfully completed the demo tour by flying to 11 cities (including Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia) in 20 days. The aircraft returned in May of this year and flew from Xining to Yushu Batang Airport, which sits at an elevation of 3,950 meters above sea level.

In April, the E195-E2 received type certification simultaneously from three major world regulatory authorities – ANAC (the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency), the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). The airplane will enter service with Brazil’s Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras S.A. in the second half of 2019. Spanish airline Binter will also receive its E195-E2 later this year.

BOEING TAKES NEW TECHNOLOGIES OUT OF THE LAB AND ONTO ECODEMONSTRATOR FLYING TEST BED

Boeing is launching its latest round of flight-testing to assess new

technologies that could address real-world challenges for airplane operators and passengers — from enhancing safety and sustainability to improving the flying experience. The company is debuting a Boeing 777 that will serve as the 2019 flying test bed for 50 projects.

“This is the latest addition to our ecoDemonstrator program, where we look at how crew and passengers can have a better experience and how technologies can make flying safer, more efficient and more enjoyable,” said Mike Sinnett, vice president of product strategy and future airplane development at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Using the 777 flying test bed lets us learn faster and move forward on improvements much quicker and with greater fidelity in defining their value.”

Among the technologies being tested on this year’s ecoDemonstrator program are:

• Sharing digital information between air traffic control, the flight deck and an airline’s operations center to optimize routing efficiency and safety.

• An electronic flight bag application that uses next-generation communications to automatically provide rerouting information to pilots when weather conditions warrant.

• Connected cabin technologies that make galleys and lavatories smart, and monitor cabin conditions such as temperature and humidity to facilitate automatic adjustments.

• Cameras to provide more passengers with a view outside the airplane.

Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program first took to the skies in 2012. Five airplanes — a 737-800, 787-8 Dreamliner, 757, Embraer E170 and 777 Freighter — have tested 112

Among the technologies now in use are iPad apps that provide real-time information to pilots, enabling them to reduce fuel use and emissions; custom approach path information to reduce community noise; and a camera system on the 777X that will help pilots avoid ground obstacles.

A key part of the ecoDemonstrator program is collaboration with industry partners to jointly test technologies and share learnings that advance aviation. More than a dozen partners are participating in the 2019 program, including an industry consortium developing a connectivity standard for networked cabins of the future known as iCabin.

Flight tests will be conducted this fall. The flights will include a trip to Frankfurt Airport in Germany, where the ecoDemonstrator’s technology mission will be presented to government officials, industry representatives and STEM students to help inspire the next generation in aerospace leadership. A majority of the test flights will fly on sustainable aviation fuel to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and demonstrate the fuel’s viability.

LUFTHANSA AVIATION TRAINING TRAINS FLIGHT OPERATIONS OFFICERS

Lufthansa Aviation Training and LH Group jointly develop a worldwide

unique concept for the training of flight operations officers and for the first time standardize the training group-wide.

Within 20 weeks the prospective Flight Operations Officers (FOO) are taught in subjects that are also part of the theoretical pilot training. These include meteorology, navigation, operational procedures and flight planning. Until the start of the new training concept, FOO training was even docked directly to the training of future pilots due to these overlaps in theoretical education. Back then, the trainees gained a lot of theoretical knowledge, but did not have any practical references to their future profession. This is now changing:

“The profession of Flight Operations Officers has developed enormously and also changed over the past decades. With the new training, we now adequately cover this grown and very complex area of responsibility. We have now developed a competence-based approach for the first time from what was originally a purely knowledge-based training course. A core element of this approach is that we are working with experienced Flight Operations Officers as instructors during training – this enables us to impart the relevant knowledge with concrete references to professional practice,” says Stephan Strobel, who is responsible for the development and implementation of the new training at LAT.

For the new training concept and its implementation, Strobel and his team received the approval of the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) for the new “National Training Organisation”, the DE.NTO.007, under the umbrella of the LAT OPS DE. The new training is thus also the first CBTA-based FOO training worldwide and the first CBTA-based training approved by the LBA in Germany.

Gujarat Aviation

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Gujarat State Aviation

Infrastructure Company Limited, Dholera Industrial City Development Limited and Airports Authority of India, organised the 2nd Gujarat Aviation Conclave, conference on business opportunities in the aviation sector at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The one day power-packed conclave saw distinguished names from the aviation industry and policy makers converge on a single platform.

Speaking at the Inaugural Plenary, Mr Jai Prakash Shivahare, IAS, Managing Director, Dholera Industrial City Development Limited, said, “There is a need for second airport for Ahmedabad. Currently the terminal capacity of the Ahmedabad airport is to handle 7 million passengers per annum. However, last year, the city airport handled some 11 million passengers. Thus, AAI and Government of Gujarat have joined hands to start working for the second airport for Ahmedabad in Dholera. The land is already available, all the permissions are in place and we hope to start the work very soon. The distance is around 80km from Ahmedabad and NHAI is creating a 6-lane access controlled expressway to facilitate connectivity to this airport. This way, Government of Gujarat is proactive to create infrastructure for future requirements.”

Captain Ajay Chauhan, Director of Civil Aviation, Government of Gujarat, said, “The

government is focussed on identifying land which can be used for future growth of airports. We have already started development of the Rajkot airport, which received the fastest clearances. We received environment clearances within 6 months and the project has been awarded in two years. The Government of Gujarat is also focussing a lot on Maintenance Repair and Operations (MRO) and we have a state of the art facility in Ahmedabad. Presently, we have done major maintenance of about 63 aircrafts from start to end. We plan to come up with similar centres in Rajkot and Ankleshwar.”

“For the growth of this sector, skill development is a key requirement. A lot of skilled youth will be required to make the workforce of the sector. We are tying up with Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and National Cadet Corps (NCC), to bring up new courses and new aviation institutes, where youth can get training. We are also trying to create some centres of excellence as well in which students will get training for creating high-tech equipment and design of the aircraft. Additionally, GIFT City is also trying to set up a centre for leasing out and aircraft financing in India. In fact, our budget for the aviation sector has constantly grown. In 2012, the budget was merely Rs 10-12 crore which is now Rs 430 crore” added Captain Ajay Chauhan.

Mr. Siddharth Kapur, CEO, Airports Business, Adani Group, said, “Today airports face major capacity challenges. Airports like Chennai would get constrained very fast and the government needs to decide about the next phase of airport infrastructure development in Chennai. These are critical issues. If airports face capacity challenges, airlines which have got in the next few years some thousand aircrafts on order, there will be a huge issue of parking these aircrafts. These are very serious challenges. In the first phase of privatisation, almost Rs 35,000 crore were invested by the private sector, for the privatisation of airports in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi.”

Speaking on the privatisation of airports, Mr. Siddharth Kapur said, “Privatisation is a good thing. The government after a long time has got the model of PPP airports quite right. The kind of response that has come for the airports has been stupendous, despite the constraint of a short bidding time. Privatisation gets money in the hands of Airports Authority of India (AAI), which in turn can use this cash to deepen the airport infrastructure in the country and boost air connectivity in the country.”

Air Marshal, RK Dhir, Advisor – Defence & Aerospace, Government in Gujarat said, “We have to create an ecosystem for defence and aviation sector. Towards that ecosystem, we are trying our best to implement the policies that are rolled out by the government. The rest of the ancillary industry is very well developed around Ahmedabad towards Sanand. On this axis, we aim to create certain hubs as industries are coming forward to support the defence and aviation sector. Going forward, we are looking to create an ancillary hub in Sanand area and helping out smaller industries that are coming into defence.”

Mr Raju Shah, Chairman, CII Gujarat State Council & Chairman, Harsha Engineering Limited, said, “Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced during her budgetary speech that India will soon enter into the business of aircraft financing and leasing. This is a great opportunity for Gujarat. Gujarat International Finance-Tec (GIFT) City is an ideal hub for establishing the aircraft financing and leasing business. It cannot just help earn a lot of foreign exchange but also give an edge to the aviation companies in India.”

ISRO successfully launches Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft

Indian space agency ISRO has successfully launched the 3,840kg Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft

into an Earth orbit through the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) MkIII-M1. The launch marks the first operational flight of the GSLV Mk III.

The spacecraft is now revolving around Earth with a perigee (nearest point to Earth) of 169.7km and an apogee (farthest point to Earth) of 45,475km, ISRO said. Following a 20h countdown, the GSLV MkIII-M1 lifted off from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Marking India’s second mission to the Moon, Chandrayaan-2 carries an orbiter, a lander called Vikram and a lunar rover known as Pragyaan. It is expected to touch down on the lunar surface on 7 September. The spacecraft is a robotic mission and will not carry humans to the Moon’s surface.

ISRO chairman Dr K Sivan said: “Today is a historical day for Space Science and Technology in India. I am extremely happy to announce that GSLV Mk III-M1 successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 into an orbit of 6,000km more than the intended orbit and is better.”

The GSLV Mk III vehicle is a three-stage heavy-lift rocket developed by ISRO. It has two solid strap-ons, a core liquid booster and a cryogenic upper stage. Chandrayaan-2 was designed and developed to demonstrate the major technologies for end-to-end lunar mission capability, which includes soft-landing and roving on the lunar surface.

The mission aims to further explore the Moon through a detailed study of its topography, mineralogy, surface chemical composition, thermo-physical characteristics and atmosphere, thereby leading to better knowledge on its origin and evolution. Earlier this month, ISRO released new images of the Chandrayaan-2.

Last month, Sivan said that the country will establish its own space station within seven years, marking its biggest development in space exploration so far after launching probes to the Moon and Mars.

The goal of humans again walking on the Moon is one giant leap closer. Lockheed Martin has completed building the capsule for

NASA's Orion spacecraft. The crew module capsule for the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission to the Moon has been stacked on top of the Orion service module, which was also recently finished.

Vice President Mike Pence made the announcement today at a ceremony in front of the Orion spacecraft in the aptly-named Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The event and announcement commemorated the 50-year anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Lockheed Martin's President, Chairman and CEO Marillyn Hewson also provided remarks at the ceremony, in addition to NASA's Administrator Jim Bridenstine, Kennedy Space Center's Director Robert Cabana and Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis. The Orion spacecraft is like none other in its design and capability.

"Orion is a new class of spaceship, uniquely designed for long-duration deep space flight, that will return astronauts to the Moon and eventually take the first humans to Mars, and bring them all back safely." said Lisa Callahan, vice president and general manager of Commercial Civil Space at Lockheed Martin. "Orion will accelerate scientific discovery of our solar system and will be the cornerstone of the defining space achievement of this era."

Since the crew module pressure vessel arrived in Florida, technicians and engineers from Lockheed Martin, NASA and supporting contractors have meticulously assembled the capsule into its finished state. The work included installing the capsule's avionic computers, harnesses, propulsion system and its 12 engines, 11 parachutes, its large 16-foot-diameter heat shield, forward bay cover and numerous other systems and components.

"Throughout assembly, the team tested and validated the many systems a hundred different ways to ensure they will operate as

designed in the harshness of deep space," said Mike Hawes, Orion program manager for Lockheed Martin. "The Artemis 1 flight will test the design and workmanship of the capsule and its service module during the three-week mission out around the Moon and back. We're excited for this mission as it paves the way for the first crewed mission in 2022, Artemis 2."

The crew module and service module were stacked together earlier in the week in the Final Assembly and System Testing (FAST) cell where they are now being fully integrated, including connecting the physical retention bolts and the umbilical lines between the two modules. The FAST cell is also where the Apollo spacecraft were integrated. The combined stack will then be powered up and undergo a series of integrated systems tests. In September, the combined stack will be shipped to NASA's Plum Brook Station in Ohio, where it will go through environmental testing in a large thermal vacuum chamber as well as testing for electromagnetic interference and compatibility. Airbus A320

This is your Captain Speaking....!!!

All about Aircraft FuelOne of the most Important, Expensive & Special products for an Aircraft is Fuel. Fuel is getting costlier and also susceptible to go dry in far future as per predictions.

Around the world, fueling the machine is mostly or even completely with Fossil fuel. Yes you heard right, Its Fossil Fuel. Fossil fuels are hundreds of millions of years old. Fossil fuels are biological materials containing hydrocarbon, which can be burned and used as a source of energy. They’re found in the Earth’s crust, so we have to drill into the earth to extract them. Fossil fuels developed billions of years ago, when dead organic matter became buried at the bottom of the sea and altered as a result of anaerobic digestion. Fossil fuel completely transformed the way humanity lived and worked, allowing us to power our Homes, Businesses and Machines with Oil.

Commercial Aircraft all over the world uses Fossil Fuel to power the engines. Be it Turbojet or Turboprop or even Piston driven Engines. Fossil fuel contains lots of energy for their weight, providing vast power required to lift large commercial Aircrafts. Fossil fuel undergoes different process to obtain Petrol, Diesel, AVGAS, and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) etc.

Various Aviation Fuel & Jet Fuel types are,

AVGAS- Aviation Gasoline,

Jet A & A1 - Kerosene type,

Jet B - Naphtha-Kerosene type,

Other Jet Fuel's - JP 1 to 10 etc.

AVGAS is vastly used for Piston driven engines around the globe where Jetliner's use Jet Fuel.

Jet Fuel is colorless to straw-colored in appearance. The most commonly used fuels for commercial aviation are Jet A, Jet A-1 which are produced to a standardized international specification. The usage of Aviation Turbine Fuel in the aircraft operations are mainly for its higher Flash point & Low Freezing properties of the fuel, i.e - less than -40*C, because operating in altitudes of 30000ft and higher will have outside air temperature of -40*C. The other type of jet fuel used is Jet B, which is used for its enhanced cold-weather performance, mostly airliners who operate near the polar region.

High Power FactsDuring TakeOff with TakeOff Power, a medium Jet Aircraft will gulp average of 100 liters per minute.

Fuel Storage

In Large Aircrafts, fuel is stored inside the Wings. The reason is

1- For Weight & Balance,

2- Storage capacity space,

3- Just above the Engines, so options to feed fuel by gravity.

Fueling takes place before the flight and various test has to be carried every time during refueling. Testing the fuel for correct grade for the aircraft and to test whether the fuel is free of contamination. Large aircraft's average fuel capacity is around 15,000kgs to 2,50,000kgs. Where large Aircraft like Airbus A380 can carry maximum Fuel of 2,50,000kgs. As fuel is an igniter, it is classified as a "Dangerous Goods" in aviation. Liquid Fuel comes under Class 3 of Dangerous Goods, Class 3- Flammable Liquids. No Liquid Fuel can be carried onboard an Aircraft except to fuel the Aircraft Engines. Fuel will be carried onboard, adequate only for the aircraft operations. Some additional fuel might be Carried by the operating aircraft which won’t be used for the flight is called "Fuel Tankering". Fuel Tankering is done by the airliners to get fuel from the place where the fuel price is low.

With the present technology advances, it is possible to refuel an Aircraft in mid air (At present it is possible only with the military aircrafts).

*Google - Ariel Refueling

Fuel Tank FactThe maximum Fuel tank capacity of an Airbus A320 aircraft is equal to 450 Honda City car with full tank Fuel.

Fuel is getting costlier as fossil fuel is in demand. The cost of Jet fuel since 2000 till present, we can witness how the fuel price for aviation has increased in last 20yrs, due to demand. Fuel is the one of the highest expense for the Airline operators. At present 50% of operating cost of an aircraft is Fuel. The air ticket price is directly affected by the fuel cost. As we can witness the ticket price will increase as fuel price increases. Jet Fuel price varies day to day, Average Jet fuel price this year is 50 rupees per liter

Fuel ConservationAirlines also implementing (GOP) Green operating procedure to save fuel and optimize the operating cost. GOP is mainly focusing on saving fuel by creating procedure to minimize fuel burn without compromising the safety aspect.

for ground operations before takeoff and after landing. Operating the aircraft in a very optimum altitude to save fuel, such as flying with the optimum speed and optimum altitude with the accurate weather data. Also incorporating the RNAV(Area Navigation) routes, the routing is shortened compared to the all other conventional routing in the past. All these methods compliments in fuel saving. Airlines are training their pilots to Save fuel and now a days it became a SOP(Standard Operating Procedure) in some airline to save fuel or use less fuel for operations when feasible. Like Takeoff with permissable less power and or using less drag for approach & Landings, etc.

Emergency FactsIn case an Aircraft run's out of Fuel mid-air, a pilot will radio "May Day May Day May Day Fuel" to indicate, the Aircraft is in Fuel Emergency.

*Google - Gimli Glider - to know about an Air Canada Aircraft ran out of fuel at 41000ft and landed safely in 1983.

Fuel DumpingEarlier there was a concept called Fuel Dumping. Its a process where a pilot can discard some of the onboard fuel in case of emergency from air to reduce weight to land immediately. As to save fuel, this procedure is mostly removed by all the manufacturer

and alternate procedure like "Landing with Overweight" is Incorporated without jeopardizing the safety.

TaxibotsAlso the new technology called Taxibots which is in trail process in India, may be in near future it could be in reality. Taxibots are semi-robotic equipment that tows an aircraft from the terminal gate to the runway with the aircraft engines turned off. This will help airline to cut down around 70% of fuel usage operations on ground, before takeoff or after landing at an airport.

Green FactsAirbus manufacturer is planning to bring world’s first electric hybrid aircraft in 2035.

Aircraft manufacturers are on constant research and development of new technology to reduce fuel usage and also to switch to bio fuel. Even Airbus and leading Aircraft manufacturer researching on hydrogen fuel to power aircraft engines. As the commercial airliners mostly operates bigger jets with higher weight, offen the take off weights are more than 60tons to 300tons, researchers are finding it very difficult to power the huge engines with fuel other than Jet Fuel.

Electric AircraftNext step in technology is without doubt that, it will be Electric motor for propulsion of Airliners.

Electric aircraft will definitely benefit the airline and passengers. Given the hefty price & demand of Jet fuel, Electric Aircrafts will eventually be cheaper to operate than those powered by Fossil fuel. Electric engines also need less maintenance and also environmental friendly. As Cars & Motorcycles are slowly changing to electric makeover, in far future we can expect flying in an Electric powered Aircraft.

Electric FactsOn 23 October 1973, A Motor Glider was converted into Electric Aircraft, the Militky MB-E1. It flew for just 12 minutes to become the first manned Electric Aircraft to fly under its own power.

Passengers to Note,- Fueling is allowed when passengers

are boarding the aircraft or passengers are already onboard the aircraft.

- When fueling is in progress, passengers will find "Seatbelt Sign" switched off. That is for easy evacuation in case of fire.

- During fueling, "No Portables Devices" sign will be illuminated, as using electronic device during fueling will create interference and possible fire.

- Mobile Phones are strictly not to be used during fueling as the signals are very strong which might create spark as the signals hits the metal part of the aircraft.

- And strictly No Smoking.

So Relax & use Fuel wisely.

Guinness World Records Certifies GE9X as the World’s Most Powerful Jet Engine

GE’s latest jet engine, the GE9X, keeps piling on the superlatives. Already the world’s largest commercial jet engine, it is also now

the most powerful one, according to Guinness World Records.

The records keeper announced today that the GE9X, which GE Aviation developed for Boeing’s new 777 X widebody jets, clocked in at 134,300 pounds of thrust during a test run. That’s not too far off the 188,000 pounds of thrust commanded by the Soyuz rocket that helped Yuri Gagarin to become the first human to orbit the Earth. “The GE9X engine incorporates the most advanced technologies that GE Aviation has developed during the last decade and is the culmination of our commercial engine portfolio renewal,” said David Joyce, president and chief executive officer of GE Aviation. “While we didn’t set out to break the thrust Guinness World Records title, we are proud of the engine’s performance, which is a testament to our talented employees and partners who design and build outstanding products for our customers.”

The new record-breaking thrust occurred during an engineering test on Nov. 10, 2017, at GE’s outdoor test facility in Peebles, Ohio. Guinness World Records acknowledged the feat on Friday at a ceremony at GE Aviation’s Ohio headquarters as part of the company’s 100-year celebration.

Another GE engine, the GE90-115B developed for Boeing 777, set the previous record of 127,900 pounds of thrust in 2002.

Joyce unveiled the GE9X engine in June at the Paris Air Show. GE has received orders for more than 700 GE9X engines. That engine, whose front fan is a full 11 feet in diameter, uses the fourth generation of carbon-fiber composite fan blades originally developed for the GE90. It holds parts made from the latest materials like light and heat-resistant ceramic matrix composites, and components made by advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing. “The ceramics allowed us to go to 60:1 [pressure ratio] inside the GE9X,” says Ted Ingling, the general manager for the GE9X engine program. “That’s huge. As result, the GE9X engine is not dramatically larger than engines in the GE90 family, even though it’s much more efficient.”

Ingling says the new technologies and materials help make the engine 10% more fuel-efficient that its predecessor. This is a big deal, given that fuel costs amount to as much as 20% of an airline’s operating expenses on average. “The technologies I’ve worked on are out of this world,” he says. “I never have a dull moment.”

CARGO Interview

AU: Can you say something about your journey in the industry?

I joined this industry in 1982. My father Mr. Jasvant B Shah, was a Licensed Custom House Agent since 1957. I passed my Customs House Agent license exam in 1984. I recognised early that this industry needed many Domain experts to ensure that its importance and need is retained. I went to Austria to study Freight Forwarding at a Vocational School in Austria and supplemented the same with work experience at Hamburg and Vienna Airport. On my return I undertook numerous courses - classroom as well as correspondence on this Domain. The courses I undertook were for Steamer Agents; IATA Agents; Airlines; Ports; Terminals; Railways and Road transport. Any thing related to Logistics interested me.

After around 6 years in Mumbai I shifted to Ahmedabad which was challenging personally; professionally; culturally and socially.

These past 37 years have been very interesting; vivid and continually challenging.

The way cargo moves across International borders has changed along with the mindset of the stakeholders and the regulators changing focus. It has been satisfying to say the least.

AU: Can you explain the challenges presently in Cargo Industry? How can we overcome them?

With the Government pushing facilitation; ease of doing business and targeting a 5 trillion dollar economy our role will increase. We have worked thru relationships and

managing. We now will have to learn to work thru systems; on systems with a system. This segment predominantly is SMSME and family driven.

A drastic change in mindset is required and a generosity that each should be permitted to grow. A unity to avoid client misbehavior is essential.

AU: How optimistic are you about the Indian cargo market?

We must expect great interesting times ahead. I truly wish I were at least 20 years younger to be able to take full advantage of the great future ahead.

AU: Do you have any specific focus on cargo Industry?

I know and do only cargo.

AU: Do you think that India needs more freighter operators?

An optimum utilisation of the existing possibilities in necessary. Whether it is available space in the air or on land or even implementation of processes and procedure. A detailed study should be undertaken to establish the gaps prior to introduction of new operators. A better utilisation of the smaller airports to feed the larger ones and reduce the delays there will ease out the situation.

AU: What is your opinion on the current aviation infrastructure development in India?

The proposals in the National Aviation Policy are well thought off and need to be achieved. There is also a National Air Logistics Policy being discussed. This too has many interesting facets. The ideas are there; we have a proven record in the recent past

of god implementation. I think we are on the right track. We only need to hurry.

AU: What are your suggestions to the youngsters who wish to choose cargo as career?

It’s a great place to be in. Learn the domain and make a fantastic life ahead here.
