The Gift of TimeBy Rev. Greg Bunton,Associate Minister of Student Ministries

    Well,its hereonceagain.

    ThisSunday,May 6,is YouthSunday!Amazing

how quickly time flies. Seems like we justhad a Youth Sunday!

Speaking of time, this Sunday (aspart of our 29 Gifts/29 Days series) wewill be celebrating the gift of time. Timeis a very precious gift, and the way inwhich we choose to use our time is veryimportant. Will we make the most ofthe time we have been given, or will wewaste it away?

One of the things I like best aboutYouth Sunday is watching how theservice comes together because I neverknow what is going to happen! Backin February our students gathered for abrainstorming session, and during thatsession we spoke with them about theupcoming 29 Gifts series and how Youth

Sunday was falling in the midst of thestudy. We encouraged them to plan aservice that would fit the theme. And thebrainstorming began!

It didnt take long until our studentshad a revelation. Have you evernoticed, they said, that all of theholidays we celebrate involve giving? And thats all it took for the service totake shape!

This Sunday we invite you tocome and join us as we celebrate thegift of time! We will journey throughthe calendar year, embracing the giftswe receive through the holidays, andreminding ourselves of the preciousnessof each day.

We will also recognize our seniorsduring our worship service. It will be awonderful opportunity to remember thetime they have spent with us, and theblessing they have been to this churchand our student ministry! And togetherwe will pray for them as they begin a newtime in their life!

Wont you make the time to join uson Sunday?

    Nursery Caregivers AppreciationSunday, May 6

It is a blessing to parents to leave their children in a safe, loving environment whilethey enjoy church activities. At First Christian, we have an amazing group of womenthat look after our littlest members. They are: Karen Endicott (Nursery Coordinator),Kayla Nickel, April Gaddy, Megan Tipton, and Megan Moran. In addition tonurturing and caring for our infants and toddlers, this staff teaches a weekly biblelesson. What a vital ministry to the church! Please join me in recognizing the nurserystaff by dropping them a note of thanks or token of appreciation this Sunday, May6th. You may also leave a note of encouragement in the Nursery mailbox located inthe church workroom. Thanks for supporting this ministry team!

Encourage One Another - In CommunityOur 29 Gifts/29 Days theme this week has been the Gift of Encouragement. Weve been hearing some great stories andwitnessing some beautiful acts of encouragement this week. A word of encouragement says to a person: you are important;you have purpose, you are loved and needed! Without these words of encouragement we will perish, maybe not physically, but certainly spiritually and emotionally.

We need not look further than our own circle of loved ones and friends, or our neighbors and congregation to see that welive in a broken and hurting world. Our world needs encouragement!

Harvard professor Peter Gomes says that a word of encouragement strengthens both the person were encouraging andthe community to which we belong by supplying that positive, affirming force that is so often missing in the routine of life. While the shelves are filled with an abundance of self-help books, Gomes reminds us that we cant encourage ourselves. He

says it is our spiritual obligation to encourage one another. And that only happens in community! The author of Hebrews advises us let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to

meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, - a good reminder that we need each other and we needto come together as a community to worship, pray, study AND encourage.

So lets continue opening our arms to one another, and encouraging one another in community!

We want to know how the 29 days of giving has had an impact in your life or in the life of someone with whom you haveshared a gift. Follow the 29 Gifts/29 Days experience online at www.give29.org and share your stories with us. You can writecomments on our blog posts, upload a short video or send an email to [email protected]
