A number of different snowmo-bile events took place during the 2013-2014 snowmobile season which helped to get many out to enjoy their sport. The inaugural WinterFest, an

event which was designed to help raise proceeds for the 5 Chautauqua County snowmo-bile clubs to help with grooming and trail maintenance was the brainchild of club member Jer-emy Winchester and was a huge success. The Event which was held at the Bemus Point Golf Club on February 2nd was

hosted by the Rid-erScope and Chautauqua Lake

rides, vendors, door prizes, 50/50s and many other fun winter activities. Congratula-tions and thanks go out to the RiderScope and Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Services for

all their hard work and all the hours put in to organ-ize and sponsor this event.

The Chautauqua County Fed-eration of Snowmobile Clubs annual ride-in which was held on February 9th continues to be one of the “must-do” events of the season. Each year in Febru-ary upwards of 500 sleds con-verge on the Stockton Fire-men's Grounds to sample a large variety of food donated by various generous restaurants along the Chautauqua County trails. Events add a Fun Factor to The Snowmobile Season

Events (Continued from page 1) has coordinated the growth of this annual event for the past several years. The Clubs that make up the federation solicit specific food donations from local restaurants and businesses through-out Chautauqua County. Those attending enjoy a sampling of the great food that is available at the many establishments along the Chautauqua trails. Thanks goes out to all those who volun-teered their time and resources to make this event a huge success and to the various estab-lishments who donate the awesome dishes.

February 9thwas also the date for the 2nd annual Snofari Ride to benefit Call of the Wild Sanctuary (www.jnkscallofthewild.org). Thanks to organizer, Jeremy Win-chester of the RiderScope, this event allows riders of all ability the chance to experience both a great day of group riding and a very inspirational visit to a rare venue featuring a number of ex-otic animals including African and Asian Lions, Siberian (Amur) and Bengal Tigers, African Leop-ards as well as North American Black Bears; Timber and Alaskan Interior Wolves. Watch for this event next season. It is a great opportunity to get the family out for a very rare experience.

Events (Continued from page 2) The 4th annual Poker Run hosted by Ellery Sno-Cruisers, Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club and the Lakewood Kiwanis Club was held on February 16th . Each year this event is held as a fund raiser to to benefit a local charity. This year proceeds were raised to benefit Chautauqua Lake Water Emergancy Team and the Youth Snowmobile Education Fund. Participants could start out at any one of 7 locations and then had the afternoon to ride to as many as 17 participating locations to draw a card. The final stop was the Vikings Lake Park in Maple Springs to enjoy a spaghetti dinner while their hands were tallied. Thanks goes out to all

the volunteers from the 2 snowmobile clubs and the members of the Lakewood Kiwanis Club for the many hours they put in to or-ganize this event. Thanks also goes out to the Vikings Lodge for all their hard work and for the donation of the

dinner. Make sure you don’t miss it next year! It is a great time! Concluding the events this season was the Groomer Support Party held at Tom’s Tavern on March 8th. Unfortunately, the trails were closed for this event due to lack of snow but that didn’t dampen the spirits of all that attended. There was live music, door prizes, raffles and a good time had by all. The proceeds from this event help offset the costs that the club experiences for groomer operation which was particularly im-portant this year due to due to the high cost of fuel and maintenance to the machines. Thanks goes out to all the businesses who donated to this event, to Tom’s Tavern for hosting, to all the club members who put in their time to put this event together and especially to all the guys who put in an incredible amount of time to maintain the groomers and groom the trails.

Changes are coming in relation to the Department of Motor Vehicles and your club membership. We will be moving to a new membership system April 1, 2014. The look of the online membership system will be slightly different from the past. • ·One of the most apparent changes is that you will no longer need your NYSSA ID # and old

password to enter into the membership system and renew your membership. • Your logon or your user ID will be your e-mail address and you can make up your password. • Unfortunately, since this is a brand new system you will need to re-enter all your information in-

cluding your address and any other person who registers a sled under your voucher e.g. your spouse or child under 18.

• Any name that appears on the sled registration must also appear on the voucher and it must be

recorded within your member account. So be sure the information that you input including your address is accurate.

• The new system will generate a totally unique voucher number for each membership year. The

All members who receive a discount registration at DMV will be audited against the NYSSA membership list for that registration year. This past year the Comptroller issued a report and identified a number of registrations where the discount fee was charged and a membership could not be located. At the end of the current 2013-14 Season DMV will provide NYSSA with the discount registration list which will be compared against the member-ship list which closes midnight of March 31, 2014. If a membership cannot be demonstrated, DMV will institute an enforcement action against the person responsible for completing the registration. The April Ellery Sno-Cruisers General meeting will be held on the 16th at the Bemus Point Golf Club at 8:00 PM. Beginning in May, meetings will be held once a month and combined with the Board of Director’s meeting. The date to be determined. Here we are in March 2014, and unfortunately looking at the end of another season. As hard as Mother Nature tried, she couldn’t quite deliver the season we were hoping for. With a cou-ple false starts early on, and the rain we experienced in early February, it was a wild ride for sure. Ironically, the lack of a big dump during the season (the lake effect machine was turned off) and the extremely hard frozen ground helped the trails remain flat, and pretty nice. Even with the erratic weather, we still piled up the hours in the groomer and preparing the trails. We spent well over 200 hours out grooming, and near 500 hours in trail prep. Seems like a lot of work for such a short period of time, but that’s what makes this sport great, the dedicated vol-unteers and generous landowners! Without them, we would have nothing but roads to ride on! Speaking of landowners, last season, we introduced a couple of new signs to our system in very specific areas. The signs were directly related to landowner concerns (possible trail closures) and are very direct. “LAST CHANCE, Owner says stay between the stakes or this trail will be closed FOR EVER”. You may have seen these signs throughout the county this season, as a couple other clubs adopted the ver-biage and made their own. Reason being, all it takes is one up-set landowner (of the hundreds that are involved) to shut down an entire trail, and finding re-routes is often times extremely diffi-cult, time consuming and costly. That is the exact position we find ourselves in right now, as an individual decided to ride just past this sign and take a joy ride through an unmarked field. Trail 4A north of Cassleman road is now closed and the club is going to have to spend time and money finding a solution. The only thing I can come up with to explain this type behavior is igno-rance and/or lack of education (I’m sure there may be others but they will not be mentioned here). PLEASE, if you see this type of behavior happening or are in a position to educate others as to the importance of staying on the marked trails do not hesitate to do so. The future of our trails depend on it! Thank you in advance for being active stewards of our trails and as a responsi-ble snowmobiler STAYING BETWEEN THE STAKES!! As the 2013-2014 season comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our hard working volunteers, and our generous landowners. It is incredible how much time and effort is spent to support the sport of snowmobiling in Chautauqua County! We are not the only club out there either, as Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club, Cherry Creek Sno-Goers, Lake Effect Trail Breakers and Sunset Drifters all play a huge role as well! All of the clubs in the county (and the state for that matter) share one challenge; getting more people involved! We not only need hands on deck, but administrators, board members, officers, computer geeks etc...ESC will be in need of a Secretary and President (and possibly others) at the conclu-sion of the 2014-2015 season, so if you are out there and would like to play a role, please join us at a meeting or work party!
