The Next Step: Senior Athletes Commit to Collegeby Javi Barajas

Wasatch High School’s Senior Athletes are con-tinuing sports through college. Many of our seniors got impressive scholarships to continue playing their sports. Quarterback Garrett Da-vis, kicker Skyler Southam, and Lineman Ben Boss are to pursue football in College.

Davis to play for Carroll College in Helena, Montana. Southam had been committed to BYU since freshman year and is to play for them after a LDS Mission. Boss to play for Weber State. For Soccer, Ella Ballstaedt who plays forward and Whitley Sargent who plays defense will continue on to College. Ballstaedt will be going to Utah and Sargent will be going to BYU Hawaii. Torri Bills will be playing soft-ball for Snow College.

In a short interview with Ben Boss he was asked why he decided to pursue football. He answered, “I love playing football and it’ll help pay for college… So that my mom doesn’t have pay for all of it.”

He was then asked why he picked Weber over other schools. He said, “They did the best job at recruiting me… They would call up just to ask how I was doing in school and even in wrestling.”

It’s clear that young athletes have a big decision to make senior year. Their reasons for pursuing sports in college may differ but it’s clear that they will all benefit from doing so.

FEATURESFellin’ Green and IrishBy Kenna MacKay

1. St Patrick’s Day was a dry holiday in Ireland until 1970. Aside from the color green, the activity most associated with St. Patrick’s Day is drinking. However, Irish law, from 1903 to 1970, declared St. Patrick’s Day a religious observance for the entire country meaning that all pubs were shut down for the day. That meant no beer, not even the green kind, for public celebrants. The law was overturned in 1970, when St. Patrick’s was reclassified as a national holiday - allowing the taps to flow freely once again. 2. The shamrock is not the symbol of Ireland, The shamrock is a popular Irish symbol. But it is no the symbols of Ireland. 3. The original color associated with St. Patrick is blue, not green as commonly believed. 4. St. Patrick wasn’t Irish. He may be known as the apostle of Ireland, but St. Patrick was actu-ally born in Britain around 385 A.D. 5. The first St. Patrick’s day parade took place in New York City in 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the city. Parades celebrating the Irish holiday weren’t common until the mid-19th century. Today, more than 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades take place in cities across the United States. New York City and Boston host some of the largest celebrations, according to History.com. 6. There are 34.7 million Irish- Americans living in the United States today. That’s more than seven times the population of Ireland, according to History.com.

It’s a national holiday in both Ireland and North-ern Ireland. 9. Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration that happens every Year on March 17th. OPINIONSGive Socialism A Chance

In my opinion, the economic inequality is very, very bad here in America. I know you hear the statistic about the 1% so often, but it’s a lot more insane than people are picturing. Now I get when you started reading this, you may be thinking that I’m just another one of those Bernie supporters, trying to rob the rich.

But what you don’t understand is that poor people need money. When most of you *cough* Conservatives *cough* picture somebody asking for money, you picture some greedy scumbag sitting on their couch, not doing anything. Well, here is a secret for you. NOT EVERY DIRT POOR PERSON IS LIKE THAT. I know of endless single mothers working 3 jobs just so they can provide a home for their children. But they never live in that home, be-cause they’re always working. How does that just seem okay to people? I get it: Nobody likes taxes. But you don’t realize how much money the 1% does have. If we tax them with with heavy taxes, the 1% can still afford their mansion and jet skis. Maybe just not the diamond studded swimming pool. And by anybody’s standards, that is enough. But as inconvenient that not having that 5 million dollar swimming pool would be, wouldn’t it be worth it to raise how much they’re paying their workers? Honestly, nobody can live off of 7.50 or even 10 an hour. And if you say the current minimum wage is perfect, I dare you to try and live off it. If you can, you are a) Not making minimum wage b) Getting large amounts of money from someone else c) Living alone on the street. “Nobody working 40 hours a week should be living in poverty,” Bernie Sanders. This is very true. Nobody that has to work that hard, for that long, should be barely affording to live. If when you picture a minimum wage increase, and you’re picturing a lazy high schooler. We need an increase and we need it now. Rise up against capitalism and the mainstream media. Socialism is our future.

Movies Worth Watching

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was released on February 5, 2016, but I got to go to a private preview for the film in January. This movie was the best movie I have seen in theaters since Now You See Me (May 2013). When I first walked into the theater, I was expecting to see another stupid movie about zombies with a historical feel to it, but I couldn’t have been farther from the truth. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was a spectacular film that had a splendid, thoughtful plot, a brilliant cast, and it had a little bit of every genre mixed in, which no one can argue with. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, go see it! I know that you won’t regret it.

The 5th Wave was about a girl named Cassie Sullivan (Cholë Grace Moretz) who was sep-arated from her brother during an alien inva-sion. She will do anything, from getting shot to falling in love, to get back to him. I went with Haydn Olsen and after we finished watching it she said, “That was nothing like the book, but I can appreciate them separately. I like the movie because the guys were attractive.” This movie has something for everyone because it has ac-tion, romance, comedy, and sci-fi. It was totally worth the eight dollars.

Everyone has been really upset that Deadpool was Rated R because it is a Marvel movie. I was mad about it at first too, but when I went and saw it, I realized that it was a very good thing that it was Rated R. This movie was very entertaining and it was hysterical, but it was very inappropriate. No one under the age of 17 should watch it, otherwise they might be scared for life. But back to the review of the actual movie, it was amazing! I laughed almost the whole movie, and I love Ryan Reynolds which made it even better. I loved the romance element that they added and the graphics were awesome. I have no regret for seeing it because I thought that it was incredibly will done and entertaining.

OPINIONS

Teachers, administrators, and students alike have noticed an interesting trend over the years - as the winter months

slowly slide into springtime, student enthusi-asm seems to melt with the snow. Assignments come in a little bit later, shoulders slump a little bit lower, and students start to mysteriously miss class. This seems especially applicable to seniors. A special term has developed for this loss of focus for students knocking on the door of graduation – senioritis.

One senior described the phenomenon as “waiting for your life to start”, and under-standably so. When society deems you respon-sible enough to drive, vote, and make signifi-cant educational/career decisions, but you still need to get permission to use the bathroom, it can be hard to feel like real life is actually underway. Many seniors may get trigger happy for the so called “real world” and begin to grow tired of the high school routine.

Senioritis seems to hit students across the board, and no, it doesn’t only affect seniors! It can strike the supercharged senior in charge of three clubs with five college classes or the

Something Must Be Going Around: SenioritisBy Nate McGhie

one taking mostly electives. Re-gardless of academic workload, any senior is vulnerable to feel a little bit of drag in the spring months.

Several major news sources recognize senioritis and offer possible solutions. Treat-ments include making small goals for the end of the year, spending time with friends, and keeping in mind that in a few months, things will pick up and motivation will hopefully return.

Runners are taught to sprint when they catch sight of the finish line, but I don’t think that’s the best advice for seniors. High school (and for that mat-ter, life) isn’t a 200m dash. Many people look back on the last few months of their senior year as some of their fondest memo-ries of high school. There will be plenty of time in life to look forward – for now, there’s noth-ing wrong with looking around at where you are, slowing down a little bit, and enjoying the ride.

Book Review: Every-thing Everything

Would you pursue love if you knew it could kill you? In the book, Everything Everything, Made-line Whittier decides to follow her heart and

find love. Madeline is allergic to the world, so she has never felt the sun on her face or the wind in her hair. For eighteen years, she had to stay inside with only two people to keep her company, her mother, who is a physician, and her Nurse Carla. Madeline was comfortable with her life, even though she was missing out on the things of the world. One day, she heard a van stop in front of the house next door. Scared to see what was out there, she looked and saw the most beauti-ful thing come out of the van. He was tall, lean, and covered in black clothing. As his eyes met hers, through the window, she knew that she would fall in love with him. Madeline finds herself talking to him via email, and starts to get to know him. This book is a magical story about falling in love and choosing your battles. Nicola Yoon did a very good job writing a story that is not like any other “sick child” story. It has adventures, and twists that you would never suspect. Will Madeline take the chance on love and put her life in danger, or will she stay inside the comfort of her home and never find out what life and love is like?

EDITORIALDon’t Judge a Book by its CoverBY HAYDN OLSEN

Everything that you can see is categorized into groups. Some would call these groups stereotypes. Wasatch High School is a breed-ing ground for high school stereotypes. Look around the commons for instance, are the people around you separated by ethnicity, by clothing style, by sport? These stereotypes are filling our school with unwanted prejudices.

“Our school is the cliquiest school I’ve ever been to,” Says Joel Dorrough, a junior that recently transferred from Oregon. Anyone can see that from the balcony there are groups that fill the commons in little circles. Hardly ever do kids move from group to group, they stay where they are, categorized by appearance.

The way someone looks shouldn’t be how they are defined, appearance is all about expression and shouldn’t mean that they act one way or another. Sera Hone says, “Physical appearance makes kids feel the need to prove themselves. Even to the members of their own group.” Why is it so important to be the most “Jock” or the “smartest?” and why is it a competition?

Students in high school are trying to find who they are and simply trying to express them-selves, everyone is different and stereotypes shouldn’t even apply because we are all DIF-FERENT! So mix and mingle! The most fun part about high school is getting to meet a lot of different people. Getting out and find-ing people for their interests instead of their appearance can help you meet people like you, instead of people who look like clones of you.
