Jesus grew up in a very devout Jewish family. Mary andJoseph observed the Jewish religious laws as evidenced inseveral instances in the Scriptures. One such observanceoccurs tomorrow, which is forty days after ChristmasDay. By Jewish Law, the rst-born male child was to beredeemed on the fortieth day since all rst-born belongedto the Lord. In accordance with the Law, Mary and Josephconsecrated baby Jesus at the sacrice of two pigeons,

the price required of those who were poor. The Lord hadrevealed to the old priest that he would not die until he hadseen the Lords Messiah. When the young couple, Maryand Joseph, arrived, Simeon immediately recognized theinfant Redeemer and spoke one of the songs recordedin Lukes gospel. This text is set as todays anthem.

Alexander Gretchaninof made the beautiful settingbased on an Eastern Orthodox chant tune. It captures thebeauty of the holiness of the moment in the Temple atJesus presentation. - Dr. Dan Sharp

ABOUT COMMUNIONToday we celebrate the sacrament of Communion, also knownas the Lords supper, the story of which is found in Luke 22:7-19.

We believe in an open table. We invite every believerwho has publicly professed faith in Jesus to join us in thiscelebration. We believe by the power of the Holy Spirit, that

the bread and the cup become for us the living presence ofthe broken body and shed blood of Jesus. We do not believeit becomes actual esh and blood, but the spiritually livingpresence of God through the Holy Spirit.

Presbyterian churches do not have altars like otherchurches may. We have a table, symbolic of the Great Feast

of Thanksgiving we will one day enjoy with Jesus and theheavenly host, as illustrated in Matthew 26:29 & Luke 22:16-18.We view the cross of Christ as the nal and sufficient altar, onwhich the ultimate sacrice was made.

Suggestions for Celebrating Communion. Before serving thebread and wine (non-alcoholic grape juice), the pastor will leadthe congregation in a time of prayer. During this time, confessyour sins to God; ways you have violated His commandments;areas of your life where you are not living by faith; things you doin an attempt to earn His favor.

While the bread is being served , meditate on what the deathof Jesus means for you; how the sins you confessed were laidupon Him and paid for with His body. Rejoice that you do not

suffer Gods judgment because Christ suffered this judgment onyour behalf.

While the cup is being served , let it wash away your guilt, muchthe way we are washed spiritually by the blood of the Lamb(Jesus). One day, you will feast with God and all that your heartdesires will be fully satised. Take this time to confess specic

things that capture your heart more than God (approval ofothers, success, your family, etc.). Rest in His presence.
