    photovoltaic applicationsSafeandeconomicalelectricpowergenerationusingphotovoltaicsystems

In view of the limited resources of fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy sources isbecoming increasingly important. Alongside wind turbines, photovoltaic systems are akey area of interest. Both the ecological and economic aspects of these systems are ofgreat importance.PV systems play an important role in CO 2 reduction and also make good businesssense, not least in view of the feed-in tariffs guaranteed by local laws (e.g. GermanRenewable Energy Sources Act EEG). The European Photovoltaic Industry Associa-tion (EPIA) forecasts growth of up to 32% in the PV sector by 2013 which has beendriven by new governmental promotional schemes introduced in many countries. The construction and operation of photovoltaic systems is now integrated in the sys-tem of standards under IEC 60364-7-712. Compliance with this standard guaranteesthe safe construction and operation of the PV system. Siemens offers a high-quality,standard-compliant product range for the operation of PV systems, which guaranteesa high level of operational safety and a long-term stability of yield.

Highlights Comprehensive, tailored portfolio for maximum operational safety Compliance with fundamental requirements in accordance with

standards IEC 60364-7-712 and IEC 60269-1,-6 Simple planning, installation and operation through components

Solar modules and connecting cablesmust be protected against return feedfrom intact lines into defective lines,as well as from defective inverters. This protection is provided by usingminiature circuit breakers or PV fuses.A DC isolator must also be positioneddownstream. This allows for discon-nection in accordance with standardIEC 60364-7-712 if a fault occurs, as wellas for maintenance work to be carriedout on the inverter. A lightning and surgearrester is essential in order to preventdamage to both the PV modules and theinverters.

    ProtectionagainstfaultsintheACnetwork

A miniature circuit breaker protects fromshort circuit and overload also on theAC-side (alternating current). In the caseof frequency converters in PV systems, smooth DC residual currents or currentswith low residual ripple may occur. Theseare sensed by a residual current operatedcircuit breaker (RCCB) Type B. Overvolt-age protection must also be provided forthe AC network.

    Safefeedingandrecordingofthegeneratedenergy

Digital E-counters record the amount ofenergy fed in and, in a calibrated design, can also be used as the basis for account-ing. The entire PV system can be quicklyand safely disconnected and reconnected by means of a fuse switch disconnector onthe meter panel.

    Comprehensiveportfolioformaximumoperationalsafety

A comprehensive product portfolio, tailored for all sizes of systems and allareas of application is available for theconstruction of a PV system. This portfolio includes tried-and-tested,high-quality appliances for protection, switching, measurement and monitoring.Enhanced safety, also for direct currentparts, with universal current-sensitiveRCCB type B (SIQUENCE). The productssatisfy the fundamental requirementsfor the construction and functionalityof photovoltaic systems in accordancewith standards IEC 60364-7-712 andIEC 60269-1, -6. Simple planning andoperation are further advantages of thePV system components. The standardrail mounting also allows for the rapidconstruction of the system.
