Englewood Cliffs to meet on newemployee hiresTuesday, February 1, 2011

    STAFF WRITER

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS The Republican Council majority is set to announce

several new borough employees at a special meeting tonight, a week after residents

rallied their support behind Borough Clerk Ilene Cohen and her deputy, Lisette

Duffy, who were let go in a surprise move last month.

Borough Attorney Fred Semrau and labor attorney Fred Knapp were also not

reappointed. Knapp was cut as the borough prepares to enter a mediation session

with the police union on Feb. 15.

The vote widened the rift between Republicans and Democrats on the council, who

vehemently disagreed with the decision and held a rally Jan. 14 to support Cohen

    and Duffy.

At a regular meeting last week, more than 100 people crowded into the municipal

courtroom, spilling into the lobby and an adjacent room in the complex, to show

their support for the women. Republican council members declined to comment

when asked by the public why they did not reappoint the employees and gave no

clues as to whom they planned to appoint tonight.

Council President Robert Agresta and Councilwoman Carrol McMorrow did not

    respond to requests for comment.

Mayor Joseph Parisi said he was not made aware of who will be appointed.

"I don't understand their logic and I don't understand why they're being so

    secretive," Parisi said.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Borough Hall at 10 Kahn Terrace. Officials had

planned to move the meeting to the Lions Club because they were expecting a large

crowd, but changed the location to Borough Hall instead.

What is this - Egypt? The Mayor should know better. Mobs don't make good

decisions. The sky is not going to fall in if the two office jobs remain vacant. It would

be appropriate for the council to solicit resumes from interested individuals for these

jobs. Has anyone suggested doing that? I am sure if there is a need to fill the jobs

by tonight, the council can make an interim (temporary) appointment. I wouldn't be

hasty to judge the Republicans for their silence. They are acutely aware of the

sensitivity of such matters and surely want to avert costly litigation. The experienced

Democrats are too, but instead of leading by good example they are, as is their

habit, goading them and stirring up mischief. This "take back the Town" business is

nonsense. I would ask - "take it back for whom?" Parisi? The Parisi Family has owned

the town for nearly four decades. They've done some good things and we are

appreciative. But, it's time this town is run by people who don't have a business

interest here; people who don't profit from municipal patronage and favors etc. Ilene

and Lisette are really not the issue in this larger struggle to make EC a finer

    community.

This is obviously not the "open and transparent government" Councilwoman Carrol

McMorrow promised when she was elected. Odds are the COuncil Majority are not

saying a word becuase they are going to reward their own unqualified hacks for

these jobs and don't want to take that hit now. The town is hiring employees tonight

whcih no one knows anything about or who they are, what kind of government

    leadership is this?
