EDITOR’S RAMBLINGS G’day folks.
‘The Pudding’ features on the front cover this month—
See it’s life story on page 8.
St Albans Campover
Saturday 25th
Feb saw 6 club members & friends
descend on St Albans for a campover.
Mal Cattarmole on his bike, Mike Day, Al & Marie
Pennykid & ‘children’, Paul Evans, Erik the Canadian, &
myself.
Most pleasant evening. No swimming as the Mc Donald
river was up a bit, covering the beach, & muddy brown.
Warm, but not too hot, a few mozzies, some loud
music from somewhere down river, a few beers, red
wine, & good conversation. Who could ask for anything
more?

Webmaster’s Musings... Another month in another year, time flies so fast. Not that much to report on this month, Classifieds traffic has slowed somewhat; I have added some more content to the homepage including a more detailed list of upcoming rallies. I hope to expand on this list to make it a useful attraction for people visiting the website, and of course for promoting the club and its activities. I had the most interesting experience of being subject to the attentions of a scammer who want to sell me some 2010 GSA parts as I have an ad in
the Classifieds looking to buy a rear wheel. If you would like to read this interesting little story check out the Classifieds section on the BMW Touring Club of New South Wales website and click on the link that says Anatomy of a Scammer. There are some lessons to be learnt and a careful examination of the e-mails from the scammer will give some hint on how to avoid being a victim yourself. This is not the first attempt at scamming directed at me has since I have been Webmaster - it is quite possible that I have become a target because of the warning about scamming on the Classifieds page. The Karuah River Rally was another success this year, albeit with some trepidation that the campsite may be closed or inaccessible. I was unable to go due to a clash in the calendar and had to watch somewhat viscerally via Internet, e-mail and text message as people made their way to the rally via the Telegherry causeway or via a more roundabout route that had been discovered on the Friday night. I was somewhat green with envy but went to a good party here in Sydney on the Saturday night as compensation. I tried posting as much information on the homepage as possible as and when I received it. I hope that this was of benefit to members and anyone out who cared to look. And I guess that’s about it for this month Keep the blue side up ☺ John Visser, Webmaster

AUCTION NIGHT This is your opportunity to get rid of that part
you’ve been tripping over for the last 5 years!!!
And get some money for it!
The March Club meeting will feature an Auction
night where we bring along unwanted parts or
pieces of motorcycle related stuff for auction.
It’s been a tradition in the club for many years,
usually at the November meeting, but was
missed last time, so now we’re catching up.
Reports are it’s lots of fun, and you never know,
you might find that part you’ve been wanting,
but couldn’t afford, or couldn’t find, for all
these years.

My Jaffle Rules campout at Spencer. Friday 20th April.
Great spot for those who haven't been before. Site of the only licensed outdoor hotel in Oz, I believe. Great camping right on the water with a fire pit. There will be a scaled down version of Master Chef to see who can come up with the best Entrée', main and desert jaffle. The prize will be similarly scaled down. If you want a lazy Sat at the outdoor pub stay two nights and really get in trouble at home. If you don't have a jaffle iron you can still come along and eat boring shit while watching My Jaffle Rules. BTW there is a bunkhouse there that still has some beds available that sleeps about ten with a kitchen on the verandah. This would need to booked by individuals if it's available. Caravans are also available for hire. A large pontoon boat that could carry about 10 could be hired for $25/hr if a group wants to cruise the waterways. It’s a great craft with a huge shade cloth covering it. Chairs and tables
are also on board to make it comfortable. Fishing is to be encouraged. Contact the owner Greg if wanting accommodation
at Malaluka Caravan Park. 02 4377 1405.

On a sombre note, also from Trevor Dean
VALE HARRY LIEHR
Sadly, we note Harry Liehr, good friend and member of the BMW Touring Club of NSW has passed away. He joined the
Club in the late 1970’s and rode a BMW R75/5.
Harry was born in Germany in Petershagen in 1941 and moved to Berlin in 1948 and saw the building of the Berlin Wall.
As soon as he was able to obtain a licence he bought his first motorbike, a BMW R25 in Stuttgart.
Harry met Jutta in Berlin and they emigrated to Australia and built their house in Springwood. He started collecting old
bikes and began racing with the Historical Motorcycle Club at
Amaroo, Oran Park and Eastern Creek race tracks. He had
many BMW’s during his time including a R75/6, a R50 bored
out to 700cc, Steib sidecars and Heinrich tanks.
Harry went on many rallies and day runs with club members
including Alf and Hilde Hoffmann, Willy Shad and Max
Richards. He was a very good tradesman in the building
industry and retired to Stanthorpe in Queensland where he
had a well loved shed to work on his bikes and projects.
Rest in Peace, Harry.

DO YOU KNOW THIS PERSON?
tAKEN He is a long time club member. Photos taken
about 1972 or 3. The one on the right is at
Amaroo Motocross track.
All will be revealed next month!

THE PUDDING STORY (As told by Woz)
The Pudding has been travelling by
motorcycle to all parts of Oz since 1975.
It originally belonged to Bear, a member of
the BMW Club WA who travelled to
see a mate in Adelaide and brought the
pudding as food while travelling.
When he was leaving he offered the pudding
to the folk he was staying with
but they didn't want it and stashed it in his
gear.
Bear didn't find it until he got back to WA
and next trip to Adelaide he took it back.
This gave rise to a discussion on what to do
with it and so the legend was started.
There were four people present, one of
whom was our own Rob Edgar. If you
ask him he has a photo of the original toast
to The Pudding at that historic occasion.
The rules of The Pudding are that it can only
travel by motorcycle.
It can only be eaten in a dire emergency but
first you have to consume all the fluids in
the motorcycle and have eaten the tyres.
This is Woz’s take on the story.
It would be good to have the ‘real’ story
from those at the original meeting.
Like, who encased it in resin?
There seems to be some wild stories
floating around since the ADV crowd have
‘taken over’ the Pud.

Karuah River Rally 2012 From Frank Cachia
The planning to attend the 2012 Karuah River Rally got underway six months earlier in mid August 2011. For the last four years
whilst being on crutches well known rallyists Alan and Maree Pennykid from the New South Wales BMW club was a Godsend,
offering their support taking me to the rally in their car. This year I was determined that the next rally I wanted to ride over. I told
this fact to my physiotherapist who set up a programme aimed to carry out this promise.
In early October I bought a mate’s K1100RS and also took my first hesitant step using only one crutch. In late November following
more strenuous exercises took my first tentative steps without any aids. On the 10th
December I gingerly threw a leg over my R26
and with my next door neighbour disapproving look went for my first ride. I only managed to cover 4 kilometres before I felt tired.
Mind you, you should have seen the beaming smile on my face.
I took out my R90S next, riding it, each trip covering longer distances. Enjoying listening to the bark from the open ended exhaust
pipes was a bonus. Climbing on to the K1100RS was an adventure in itself finding out rather disappointingly that the leg didn’t have
the strength to push the bike off its side stand. Naturally more strenuous exercises followed. Lowering the overall height by
removing a rear shock absorber spacer helped.
Time waits for no man and on a Friday morning in February accompanying me on a K100RS a mate, Peter and I pointed our bikes
north aiming for the rally. Peter has heard so much about this rally has waited 3 years to come and see for himself. It was worth it. It
was one of the most challenging yet exhilarating Karuah rallies that I have ever been too.
The ride to Benalla via the back roads was enjoyable, the ride on the Hume Highway to Albury wasn’t. A few kilometres later we
turned off onto the Olympic Way. The Olympic Way is what the Hume Highway was like in the seventies. There was no police to
speak off; you might be delayed due to road works – we were. You don’t bypass a town, just slow down as you go through it.
Hamlets like Gerogery are nothing more than a train whistle stop. It has one double story pub in the corner, an old petrol station
across the road and a few houses on the other side of the train tracks. Under a crystal clear sky the only thing that moves are a
couple of bare footed kids on pushbikes who madly wave back at you as you ride by. With luck you might even see the lazy
movement of a dog’s tail as it lies under a porch trying to escape the heat.
Over the horizon the tiny white clouds were gathering forming a single menacing mass. This definitely doesn’t look good. As soon as
I smelt the moisture in the air we stopped, put on all wet weather gear, batten down the hatches and as we started rolling awaited
the storm. We didn’t have to wait long, a few drops on the visors soon turned the road into a water course. Fact, in the forty years I
have been riding motorbikes I have never ever travelled in such a heavy downpour. It was heavy enough that even with his
headlight on I couldn’t see him behind me. No more than 12 or so minutes later I pulled over and asked him whether we should stop
and seek some shelter. It was agreed and planned to stop at the nearest cover. Ironically a few minutes later and the rain suddenly
stopped. Within 5 minutes the sun peeked out from behind the passing storm. We soon stopped to remove the wet gear due to the
rapidly increasing temperature.
At Bathurst we rode out on to the race track and did a couple of laps at Mt Panorama. I have to take my hat off to those V8 boys;
they really have their work cut out manhandling those cars in some tight bends in the annual 1000 kilometre race.
After traversing the beautiful Bell’s Line of Road we stopped for the night in a Richmond pub. The traditional country pub service
wasn’t available – but greed was. A single room was $100, another $100 for key deposit, overhead fan and nightlights not working,
sanitary conditions unsatisfactory and the security lock was holding on with just one screw.
Thankfully the morning brought clear skies, warm conditions and after a very light breakfast the Old Putty Road was just down the
road. By the time we arrived in Singleton we had our fix of sweeping and tight bends and looking forward to once again arrive in
Dungog this time on a motorcycle. The road to Dungog via Gresford showed typical rural hilly country, the scene only spoilt by the
unbelievable rutted, broken down, countless repatched surface. You couldn’t make it rougher if you tried. No high-ranking politician
lives here.
Leaving the bikes in front of the Dungog pub we made friends and renewed old ones as we indulged in the time honoured tradition
of downing a few glasses of ale. First renewal is the barmaid Debbie who has been pouring me a beer for the last twenty years. I
received one heck of a hug and kiss from her congratulating me on coming back once again wearing leathers. She said that quite a
lot of riders have been talking about me. Outside the pub I had more handshakes that I could count.
A moment later and the skies opened up. For no more than ten minutes it positively poured down. Within minutes of stopping the
humidity returned and the road started to dry off.
BMWTCNSW Newsletter March 2012 10
Due to bridge repairs the fourteen kilometre road into the rally was closed off and we detoured adding another sixteen kilometres.
The gravel road was heavily gravelled and in places quite steep resulting in riding in either first or second gear. Two thirds in and the
causeway presented itself. Swift running water did present a problem although it was far worse the previous day. Tackling it was a
little unnerving as my left leg was by now beginning to complain from the pounding it was absorbing. By the time I rolled into the
camp site my leg was not on talking terms. As welcomed as I felt all I wanted to do was sit down and rest my leg.
Once the tent was up, thankfully with a little help from my friends it was time to go walkabout. Again friends and strangers made
me most welcomed. I was rather surprised to win the “longest distance male” trophy at the club presentation. The night was spent
chatting around the campfires. It didn’t rain as per usual. The highlight was to look up and see a star filled sky. What a sight
something that I haven’t seen for so long.
All those thoughts wandering and worrying whether I will make it to the Karuah vanished. Unfortunately camping on the ground
albeit on a mat resulted in broken sleep. I found that I couldn’t sleep on my left side as the scars and numerous pieces of steel were
applying pressure onto the hip plate and the repaired bones. I was wide awake just before dawn following tossing and turning trying
to find a comfortable position.
Packing was rather slow due to being unable to kneel. It was decided the previous night that my bike will be transported out on a
trailer as the rough terrain had left the leg in no condition to take another pounding. While Peter was riding his bike trial fashion I
was sitting down in a four wheel drive seeing my bike bouncing about. Thanks, Malcolm for helping me out.
At Dungog an ice cold drink for us, fuel tanks topped up and once again tackle the road to Gresford, Singleton and then the Old
Putty Road. The run to and through this road was traffic free, pure enjoyment, the run through Wollemi National Park all the way to
Lithgow wasn’t, pure frustration, traffic at crawling speed. Coming up behind slow traffic is close to road rage.
As previously mentioned I enjoy travelling through Lithgow. If ever there was a town of living history this is it. Once past Lithgow the
road opens up and the run to Bathurst is much easier giving one a better opportunity to pass Sunday tourists. From then on we
were able to hold a better hourly average.
Lithgow was the place for a twenty-minute break. Here a quick bite to eat; then fuel and visor cleaning, a quick pit stop. From now
on the road opens up, plenty of overtaking opportunities. Once Cowra was in the rear view mirror, traffic was down to nothing and
once again we had the road to ourselves. How empty was the road? Between Cowra and the Hume Highway junction I counted six
semi-trailers. Perfect riding situation, an empty road ahead, a healthy bike below me, and a dazzling blue sky above, what more
does a motorcyclist wants?
Small and medium size towns passed by as we headed for the Victorian border.
Albury was the final stop, again it was a case of fuel top up, clean the visor and back on the road. Tea time was at the Glen Rowan
McDonalds/BP petrol complex. The turn off the Hume Highway at Benalla took place just after midnight. From that point to Yea
brakes were often used sometimes urgently as 3 kangaroos and 6 rabbits came over to say g’day.
By the time I passed Bonnie Doon I started to feel as if I’m sitting on a brick. Quite often I moved around in the seat trying to find a
comfortable position. By Yea the early morning cold was penetrating the leathers making the left leg ache again.
The lights of the first suburb were quite welcomed and 1197 kilometres and 15 hours and fifty-five minutes after leaving Dungog
hotel I switched off the bike in front of my garage.
The 35th
presentation of the Karuah River Rally was over.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Woz’s Karuah The rally was a ripper. Access was probably easier than
it's ever been due to absolutely no loose stuff left on
the road in after a through washing over the last
month. I was one of last to ride out late this morning
and after the preceding traffic I would see more mud on
the road riding past a building site.
For next year please remember that after 35 years
Karuah has never been cancelled and only once has the
causeway been impassable. So unless some nanny type
beauracrat exerts their over active maternal instinct
BMWTCNSW Newsletter March 2012 11
over us the 36th KRR will happen same time, same
place next year, rain, hail or shine.
To quote an old ad', "You'll never, ever know, if you
never ever go."
If you weren't there this year you missed;
Probably the easiest ever ride in.
Being mugged by the goanna on Sat morning (it was his
territory after all and he wanted the rent paid in food)
A swim in a quiet eddy of the ragging torrent with
Cheryl and Tony.
Being able to say "I crossed the causeway in 2012" (no
big deal).
Frank Cachia riding in from Melb on his K1100RS for his
35th KRR and his first ride in after his industrial accident
in 2007.
Pogo (anyone know his real name?) (Peter Cusack) rode
in on one leg cause that's all he's got.
The Pudding was there.
One hundred and fifty others to party with.

Being able to say you were there.

And, most of all you missed a great rally.
The bike I rode in clocked up it's 100th mile (not k's)
since 1994 when I filled up at Wilberforce on Friday.
When I got home it had another 400 or so added.
Ride what you've got and within your own or it's limits
and please don't scare off others. If you don't want to
go, just don't.
Fantastic job again by Rob Lovett in organising the rally
and hats off to all who helped over the w/end.
Cheers

Nabiac Bike Museum Day Ride Sunday 19th February 2012
By Mark Vane-Tempest
My first visit to this museum was about 18mths
ago and I thought it was well worth a look. There
are over 700 bikes here on display in all states of
condition. Some are excellently restored vintage
showpieces whilst others are rusted relics. Not a
lot of BMW though, but with one having a double
(side by side) rear wheel. Achieved due the single
side swingarm and the rims welded together. I
expect it offers excellent traction in the dirt!
We left Raymond Terrace Maccas and headed the
back way through Clarencetown and a little place
called Glen William, with beautiful countryside.
Eventually onto the Bucketts Way and up to
Gloucester for a fuel top up. That 16 litre tank
could easily have been 20 litres but I guess you
don’t need the range in Germany & Europe.
Anyway, heading east through Krambach and into
Nabiac. A great ride for anyone. Did I mention
there were just three of us? After taking in the
museum, we headed for lunch before deciding on
the return route home. Glen on his road bike took
the scenic lakes way via Forster, while Jacob on his
new GS650 single & me on the F800GS, headed
west into the mountains on never before seen
trails, at least not by this trip leader.
Turned out to be excellent grade trails (forest road)
and very scenic with some shallow creek crossings
thrown in for good measure. Maybe a good
campsite there, will have to go back and check it
out another day. This brought us out at Buladelah
and back onto the Pacific Hwy for a quick return
home. A variety of riding and all up a great day out
on the bike. --------------------------------------------------------------------
2012 KARUAH RIVER RALLY - ANOTHER GREAT RALLY & RIDE
For those members into rallies, our 35th KRR was another great start to the riding year with 137 registered participants and perhaps another 20 - 25 friends and relatives there to have the "Karuah Experience". As a bonus, weather conditions were well below those for 2008 and 2009 (at the latter we got 500mm plus of rain - according to the locals).
The success of the rally depends on a huge amount of help from members coupled with the generosity of various corporate sponsors & other supporters. In no particular order, we are indebted to the following corporate sponsors and contributors:
▪ Forests NSW (for hosting us at Frying Pan Creek)
▪ BMW Australia ▪ BMW Clubs Australia (these two for
quality prizes) ▪ Brisan Motorcycles (for their excellent
marquee) ▪ One Steel Pty Ltd (for their large
marquee) ▪ Robson Huntley & Associates (for their
financial support) ▪ Bank Hotel Dungog (prize & catering
support) ▪ Motohansa (some excellent prizes)
We are also indebted to a number of members and other supporters who lent a hand before, during and after the rally. Again, in no particular order, we had invaluable help from; Andrew Watson (towed the club trailer & arranged prizes), Joe Hughes (obtained and towed the Brisan & One Steel Marquees), Ian Horsburgh, Mal Cattermole (support vehicle & gas bottle refills), Chris Huddy, Nicholas Huddy, Trevor Dean (for BMW / Clubs Australia sponsorship), Paul Evans, Mike Day, Dave Barlow, Cheryl Ison (and Cheryl's daughter Rachel), Cheryl Clarke, Martin Burke, Dave Blunn,
BMWTCNSW Newsletter March 2012 14
Adrian Selwyn-Smith (support vehicle), Wayne Banks, Colin Bovis, Tony Schmidt, Warren Buffett (rally awards - very nice), Phil Ingham (for laminated maps & signs) and John Visser for keeping club website details current (a bit tricky given the flood of updates). And thanks to all who helped clean up the site on Sunday morning, pack the trailer, then take it back to Sydney and do a clean & sort the following weekend (the job never ends).
Joe Hughes' idea to use his trailer to channel traffic was a flash of brilliance as was the positioning of the Brisan marquee across the entry track - excellent thinking!! And we also had valuable assistance from local Forests NSW staff who patiently withstood my endless stream of nagging phone calls.
We should also thank The Pudding for being there - and equally - and most importantly, all those who took the challenge and rode in - as always, please take a bow (especially Frank Cachia recovering from a bad industrial accident)! For those who rode, the Telegherry River Causeway was a bit daunting (we had a diversion set up if needed), and six inches of rain in the previous fortnight had made the road a bit rough (but it was solid). The weather was benevolent with only a brief burst of rain on Saturday afternoon.
Queries & Questions on KRR. In the weeks before the rally 9and in previous years), many queried its viability. Common questions (along with the Club's policy) are:
▪ Will the rally be cancelled due to the weather - no, it's been going for 35 years - with 34 at the same location irrespective of weather and road conditions (but the location would need to be moved if Forests NSW withdrew the permit - and they could). If the location had to change (temporarily, we'd make other arrangements.
▪ Would the date change - no, that's its position in the rally calendar. KRR is an essential element of the BMWTC NSW's culture, heritage and history - so no, it won't be deferred due to a bit of rain - and for riders who find it daunting, we have the excellent Far Cairn Rally (only 1.5k of very good dirt).
▪ Do you have to own a BMW - no, all riders are welcome.
▪ Do I have to register - no, just ride in. ▪ Do I need a trail bike - no, there is 14k
of mainly solid dirt - even after heavy rain,
90% of the surface remains stable (but it can be a bit rough). Road bikes will manage (I've seen R1's & GSXR 1000's do the Alpine Rally in the Brindabellas), and if a Honda Blackbird (no mods) can get to Lorella Springs (2008 OCR) then anything's possible (and Trevor Dean has done all 35 KRRs on the same R75/5).
▪ With regard to acknowledgements, I'm sure we've missed a few (rally memories can often be hazy ones) - please let me know and we'll update the list in the next issue.

Woz’s Installation of the Enduralast Alternator
and Enduraspark Electronic Ignition on an R80ST.
Part one. G’day,
I had been thinking about upgrading the ignition on my 1984
Project R80ST for sometime and my initial choice was the
Alpha Ignition but I tried unsuccessfully for five months to
acquire one and finally bit the bullet and spent the dough on
the full Enduralast kit from EuroMoto Electrics that will
hopefully remove the worry of failing old OEM electrics.
BMWTCNSW Newsletter March 2012 15
If you’re reading this in isolation it won’t make a lot of sense
unless you read through the instructions at
www.EuroMotoElectrics.com in particular read the
installation instructions / guidelines (link below) and if you
look at the parts layout on page 14 all the following stuff I’ve
written here will hopefully make sense and you can relate it
to your ST.
http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images
/enduralast%20installation%20guidelines_v7.7%2011-11.pdf
Excellent service from John Rayski at EuroMoto Electrics saw
the goods arrive in Sydney, Australia in eight days. A bit of
chin scratching preceded actually making a start that
included reading and rereading all the instructions and then
laying out all the items to make sure everything was there
and it was. Oh, the only thing I couldn’t find was the Posi Lock
fitting instructions referred to in the instructions so I found
them on line here http://www.posi-
lock.com/instructions1.html . They turned up in the
packaging after I’d finished so the kit was 100% after all.
The instructions are generic and it soon became obvious that
a couple of things didn’t quite suit the ST but are probably
fine for most other models. I confess here that I am a
dedicated shed dweller and prepared to invest my time more
than my hard earned in finding suitable solutions to just
about everything. A man’s got to have a hobby, right? I have
a pretty fair workshop at my disposal and one of the brackets
I made is a machine shop job and even the other one has
tapped holes in it. The drawings are attached so you can get
it / them made, make them yourself or find your own way to
achieve a similar result.
One of the things I made was the cover plate for the original
‘Bean Can’. It took ages on the lathe and mill so do yourself a
favour and buy the EuroMoto one for thirty five bucks. No
drawing for that. If you’re that stubborn measure the bean
can.
By good fortune, the location I chose for Voltage Regulator
means you don’t have to extend as many wires as the fitting
instructions suggest. Less joins means less places to get
trouble later on.
Coils.
I ordered the recommended 2 x 6V Bosch coils and found I
had nowhere to put them unless it was with gaffer tape to
the luggage rack. On the ST you need one of the twin coils
that meet specification. Refer to the instructions on line
when ordering!
Coil option.
Here is a bit of alternate info. My ST is ex UK and came to Oz
in 1994 then was stored until I bought it a couple of years
ago. It had a twin coil but obviously grafted off something
else due to its ugly home grown mounting bracket. It works
fine. The original owner told me it is a Honda coil but couldn't
tell me from what model. He said it was a mandatory mod by
the locals if you wanted reliable starting in a cold UK winter.
The existing Honda coil pack is between the specified 2 to 3
ohm primary resistance (2.3 actual) so I am running with it
and made an improved mounting that I’m happy with. Having
made that decision I got the urge to try and identify it by the
markings on it.
Make TEC (All Honda coils are TEC)
I.D. # EW82-TR1
Using those I finally got the Honda OEM part number of
30510-ME9-013.
Apparently they were standard fitment to at least the 500 &
750 Shadow models.
Before we get too deeply into what I did, I gotta tell youse
the usual disclaimer stuff like if you break your bike it ain’t
my fault and if you hurt yourself then it’s even less my fault.
I’m just telling you what I did. What you choose to do is
entirely your own decision. In addition, my view on electrical
safety is on page one here. In fact, read all page one here!
