The Kinsale-based technology millionaire, who grew up in poverty in New York, said too many people had become depend- ent on the Government to sur- vive. In a wide ranging interview with the Evening Echo, he said that while a safety net was re- quired for the most vulnerable people in society, the Govern- ment provided too many pro- grammes that were causing an “unhealthy” reliance on the State. He also backed Irish citizens protesting on the streets about austerity and the fact that nobody had been held respons- ible for the financial crash that had obliterated the economy. He called for “politicians, bankers and financial regulat- ors” to face jail for “egregious crimes and violations that had left the Irish people indebted for By PADRAIG HOARE a generation.” He said that many on Wall Street had been jailed for their parts in the global financial crisis of 2008. “In the USA, financial crimin- als have faced the wrath of the courts yet in Ireland, nobody has gone to jail. “It’s not a slap on the wrist these people need, it’s hand- cuffs.” See pages 10 and 11. Three brothers aged 50, 52 and 54, including one who lived at the house where they were held and was a school bus driver, have been arrested. One of the women, Amanda Berry who was just 16-years-old when she disappeared, has a six-year-old child born during her captivity. See page three.
