'thank you, TjC resders, f o r your Census returns. Your rcscurse t o suggestions for l eg i s l a t ion for the severely disabled vas ave l i whelming (see page 10). Clesrly, t h i s is our dlost urgent concern and hope. On the fecing psge, we proudly repor t the crusade by a p o u p of California polios t o e f feo t remedial s t a t e legis la t ion.

Although our present frightening f inancia l problems have ar isen because of the precipitous vithdrsval by the National Foundation of i t s support of home care attendants, we are sti l l most appre- c i a t ive of the astounding care of polios by the former NFIP. No other ~ a u p of handicapped ever fared so well. We survived - be- cause of the respira tory centers, care, and equipment i t then sup ported. We thrived - because i n a dramatic experiment t o save hospi ta l cas t s , it pioneered returning us t o our homes with r e p pira tory equipment and attendant oere.

Continuing survival and expected longevity involve finan- c i a l needs that great ly exceed those which could be borne inde- f i n i t e l y by a voluntary organization. Clearly, the responsibi l i ty now l i e s with a coordination of sss is tancs from County, Sta te and Federal governments.

Without assistance: some of us are exhausting our f inanc ia l means to r e t a i n sn attendant; some of us are taking the chance of being l e f t alone, and running the r i s k of dying due t o lack of a t tent ion; some of us ere vegetating i n r e s t homes.

It i s a good investment t o keep us st home. We can d i rec t our households, manage our ohildren, end keep our famil ies together - IF we have en attendant t o take care of us and cook and uash, etc. We can run successful home businesses and a p p o r t our families - IF we have sn attendant t o t&s care of us and act ss see re tag and ass is tant .

We a r e l iv ing i n an era of increased awareness o f the needs m p o t e n t i a l i t i e s of the t o t a l l y disabled. The concerted campaign by California polios for s t a t e l eg i s l a t ion points one way ue can t ransla te concern and hope in to action.

Pa r i s Church-crypt - the connection? One of the most outstanding women of o u r time, and her story i s one essent ia l ly of our time too.

I t was Holy Week i n 1930, and e young Franc-Polish woman knel t with three cornpenions i n the Church crypt before the Rbbe'Gauoheron. He was reeeivine t h e i r r e l i e ious vows and thev were a l l s t a r t i n e out on an ad- venture i h i e h i s as exci t ing now as thkn.

- What other age before ours, could have accepted a Congregation of nuns

who ere a l l physically handicapped and of ten complete invalids? It was Suzanne Wrotnowska's oonviotion t h a t women whose heal th would have pre- vented the i r entering any of the estsblished re l ig ious orders, should form the i r oun Congregation. Their aim was t o be twofold: they vovld o f fe r the i r weakness and suffering t o God jus t as the healthy o f fe r the i r s t re- ngth and v i t a l i t y . And they would work t o help others who are weak end Buffering, thus turning apparent uselessness t o abundant f rui t fulness . Suzanne l e f t home with 8/ in her pocket. As Sare Marie des Douleurs,

she continued the same t radi t ion. But the response t o her conviction uea such tha t i t was proved t o be well founded: when, a f t e r apparently insu- perable d i f f i cu l t i e s , the f i r s t Priory was opened, enquiries came from a l l pa r t s of the world.

The young women who came t o join the f i r s t three compnions, did not find a pseudo nursing home i n which to compare the i r ailments: no S i s t e r i s p r m i t t e d t o mention her health except t o the Prioress and the Doctor. Some are bl ind or deaf, many are paralyzed and others have no arms or am- putated legs . It does not matter: often, the most handicapped i s spir i t - ua l ly the strongest, and physically, each can contribute something t o the communal l i f e t h a t i s the basis of the i r ru le of l i f e .

I,, I....L. h g l e n d , there are dispensaries f o r the poor, a guest house, poultry farm, a pr int ing press, and cateohism classes are held for children and days of prayer and quie t f o r the i r p r e n t s . I n Rmerloa, there i s a research oentre for t racing the ea r ly symptoms of cancer. (Sse cuts, l e f t ) .

So we cover the years between 1930 end 1950, when Rams approved the Congregation and it became formally recognized. And so onwards, always remembering tha t MBre Marie i s herself crippled and en invalid, u n t i l we come t o tha t February day two years ago when she stayed with my family while es tabl ishing a Priory in England.

Her v i s i t sparkled with her w i t and humour, as she to ld us ahout her war-time experiences during the occupation - exci t ing enough t o merit s book i n themselves.

Now there are t en m s a t St. John's Priory, end from the f i r s t , the loca l people showed r e a l generosity and enthusiasm, supporting them a l l through the f i r s t c h i l l weeks i n a strange country. There i s s lay association cal led the "Riends of the Siek"vhich anyone interes ted esn join. They do much t o make pract ical problems eas ie r for the S i s t e r s , but i n the P r io r i e s the nuns a re self-supporting and they do e l l the work themselves.

It can be obtained from the Priory.

When M'ere Merie landed in New York in 1954, she had 5 d o l l a r s in her pocket. The following year, Regina Mundi was opened, given and furnished by a q s t e r i o u s band of those benefactors who p o p l e her s to ry and the story of her Congregation - the "S i s t e r s of Jesus Crucified." R ook and r o l l " i s not a l i k e l y term t o associate with a pol io pat ient , but I do jus t tha t during our vacations.

For the past three years, I have spent the summer months a t Catalina Islsnd,Californis, aboard our boat on which I use a rocking bed during the day end Ports-lung st night.

Pr ior t o my polio in 1953, my husband and I spent many years sa i l ing. We took frequent veek-end t r i p s aboard our 45 f t . sloop, LANI. My husband has not only been a- round smell boats a l l h i s l i f e , but he was i n command of two ships while serving in the Coast Guard during World War 11, and h o l d s a Merchant Marine Off icer ' s License.

In 1957, l iv ing a f loa t seemed practicable again, and ue acquired a seagoing houseboat. We named her the DRUMEOlJR or DRUM f o r short. This was the name of a clipper ship awed by w husband's grandfather. Our DEUM is a 52 foot, t w i n screw d iese l motor host. She has a 15 foot beam. Below a f t , are two staterooms with e head end a shower, and e double stateroom f o r guests with a bathtub. Forward

below i s the galley with a stove, large r e f r ige ra to r and freezer. Forward of t h a t are two smell staterooms and lavatory which our Down-Easter one-man crew and our son use. Between the l iv ing quar ters i s the engine room. The upper deck consists of a p i l o t house forward, and s large cabin a f t .

We extended the m i n cabin by four f e e t t o give us a 10' x 16' room. This enabled us t o build a 7' se t tee on the port side of the oabin, and use i t as B M f a r "He' (my husband). Opposite the set tee , on the s f t e r starboard side, we b u i l t in a cabinet. The top v e use f o r serving meals, the r e s t gives us atorege place and a place fo r an automatic heater. We put in a s l id ing glass door with windows on e i the r side e f t . This gave us a very cheerful cabin with windows on three sides.

My rocking bed wes ins t a l l ed on the forward starboard side of the cabin. A cradle was b u i l t outside on the a f t deck t o hold the P~rta-lung. Other polio equipment con-

sists of two Monaghans, two suction machines and a hand resuscita- tor. Ye borrow an ex t ra suction machine and a Honaghan f o r the sum- mer montha f o r emergencies.

A major project was t o install the e l e c t r i c aupply l i n e s t h a t we would need from Cats l ina Islsnd; 800 f e e t ware needed t o reach the exis t ing l i n e s on the is land; 285 f e e t l i e m the bottom of the c- cean. We ins ta l l ed a generator t o supply us with 32 v o l t s d.c. f o r the boat and 110 v o l t s a.e. f o r my equipment.

Aboard ahip, I l i v e an p re t ty mueh the same routine as I do a t home. In the morning, while my nurse makes me presentable, "H" cooks the breakfast. Ae is a good chef. After breakfast, I am l i f t e d from the lung t o the se t tee . The Porta-lung i s then removed from the bed and put in i t s cradle on the deok. Then I sunbathe on the a f t deck, and have a bucket of water poured on me f o r a bath, which I r e a l l y enjoy. Then, I am carried t o the bed and dressed.

Two or three nights e week, we hsve f r iends f o r cooktails before dinner. I see many more p o p l e then I do st home. No one i s i n e mad tea r a t Catalina, and f r iends come over from t h e i r o m boats. The f i r s t Bummer, we had boat house guests every waekend, end t h i s turned out t o be too mueh socia l l i f e f a r me. Since then, I have taken it easy and my two children, Nancy end lee (14 and 12). hsve a l l the overnight guests.

A t night, when I go t o bed, the Porta-lung must be a t r a p p d t o the bed very securely. The prevailing winds are westerly, but when en eas te r ly blows, the cove can become quite choppy. This r o l l i n g alarmed me the first summer, when I was an the rocking bed, but the next year, I was able t o t&e it without qualms.

Aa a rule, we leave the cove on Thursday morning and a r r ive a t our berth in San Pedro st 1 p. Here we take on f resh laundry and supplies of food. R i d a y morning guests or passengers come aboard end we return t o the cove f o r another week. The pest two summers, I have l ived a f loa t 8 weeks without leaving the boat.

The cove, i n which we have our mooring, i e a b e a u t W spot with many kinds of f i s h swimming through its c le s r blue water. We con- s ider t h i s t o be one of the most idea l spots t o be found anywhere. It st i l l amazes me I am a f loa t again.
