1. INTRODUCTIONAccess to the appropriate information is important to development of efficient andmarket sensitive spectrum access and regulatory frameworks. This includes theavailability of statistically reliable information about currently marketed radioproducts. This document provides descriptive statistical information on the technicalcharacteristics of commercially manufactured parabolic microwave antennas.

1.1 Purpose and ScopeThe statistical information detailed in the attachment and annexes is intended tosupport spectrum planning decisions, including the development of the new minimumperformance antenna regulatory arrangements detailed in Spectrum Planning ReportSPP11/20011. The information provided may also prove useful in other contexts,including national and international sharing studies between systems of the fixedservice and other services.

Statistically reliable technical parameters are included for commercially manufacturedparabolic antennas, as used in selected 1.5 – 58 GHz point-to-point fixed servicebands. The information is based on the analysis of published data for approximatelytwo thousand commercial parabolic microwave antennas, consolidated from majorantenna manufacturer product catalogues.

2. Overview of the information providedThe sample space for each band includes a representative dataset of commerciallymanufactured parabolic antenna models, as commonly used for line-of-sight point-to-point terrestrial services in the 1-58 GHz microwave bands. However, the datasets for50 and 58 GHz bands are limited by product availability.

Linearly polarised, single and dual polarised models are included, representingstandard, deep dish and improved, high performance shrouded and ultra-highperformance commercially manufactured models. Dual band and other specialisedtype antennas are not considered.

2.1 Antenna ParametersTable 1 provides a data summary about (parabolic) antenna reflector diameter, gain,half-power beamwidth, front-to-back ratio and cross-polar discrimination, includingparameters for minimum, maximum, mode, mean, standard deviation and sample size.Graphical population density histograms are provided in the corresponding annexesfor each band.

2.2 Detailed Density DistributionsAnnexes A through R provide detailed density distributions for each of the parameterslisted in the summary table. A scatterplot of antenna aperture/type vs front-to-backratio is included. For each band, the annexes include:

1. histogram of antenna models by reflector diameter (m);2. bar chart of the number of antenna models by reflector diameter (m);3. histogram of antenna gain (dBi) distribution;4. histogram of antenna 3dB beamwidth (degrees) distribution;5. histogram of antenna front-to-back ratio (dB) distribution;6. histogram of antenna cross-polar discrimination (dB) distribution;7. scatterplot of antenna size/type vs front-to-back ratio.

Note: The scatterplot antenna types are categorised, taking account of themanufacturer information and nomenclature, into the following types:• grid – grid parabolic antennas (bands below 2.5 GHz only);• standard – standard parabolic dishes, including ‘deep dish’, focal plane and

‘improved’ models;• high performance – shrouded models incorporating rf suppressors;• ultra-high performance – shrouded models featuring special beamforming and

high cross-polar discrimination.
