This newsletter highlights new projects and major stories from IWMI West Africa in 2015.
Opening of the new IWMI office for West Africa and the Africa region
The new International Water Management Institute (IWMI) office for West Africaand the Africa region was officiallyopened by Hon. Opong Fosu, Ministerof State at the Presidency, on April 29,2015. The ribbon-cutting ceremony wascarried out in the presence of LetitiaE. Obeng, retired Director, Council for
ScientificandIndustrialResearch-WaterResearch Institute (CSIR-WRI), Ghana.JeremyBird,DirectorGeneral,IWMI,andDonald Blackmore, Chair, IWMI Boardof Governors, highlighted that the newoffice represented IWMI’s commitmentto the region, and to the developmentagenda and goals of Ghana and, morebroadly,WestAfrica.Theevent includedaculturaldisplayfollowedbyatourofthe newbuilding.
High-level panel discussion
A high-level policy dialogue was alsoheldtomarktheofficialopeningofthenew IWMI office in Accra, Ghana. Thetheme of the dialogue was ‘Managing
water and agroecosystems for food security and economic development in the Volta Basin’.Thedialogueprovidedan opportunity for the IWMI Board ofGovernors to discuss the region’s keywaterandlandmanagementchallenges
withthemainstakeholdersintheregion(nationalgovernment,andcountryandregional representatives of international development organizations in Ghana).

Creating and capturing value: Supporting enterprises for urban liquid and solid waste recycling for food, energy and a clean environment (CapVal)
TheCreatingandcapturingvalue(CapVal)project,fundedbyGhanaWASHWindow–SustainableWaterFund(GWW-FDW),wasstartedin2015. Partners (includingJekora Ventures Ltd., Volta GhanaInvestment Co. Ltd., Training, Researchand Networking for Development[TREND], World Agroforesty Centre[ICRAF], Resource Centres on UrbanAgriculture and Food Security [RUAF]Foundation, and Kumasi MetropolitanAssembly) are collaboratively working
towards implementing the followingsolutions:
1. A co-composting facility thatwill annually transform 5,000 m3 of fecal sludge and 300 tons oforganicsolidwasteinto200tonsofsafe(pelletized)compost(Fortifer).
2. A 1,000 tons/year briquette plantatAffienya.
3. An African catfish aquacultureproduction business at theChirapatre wastewater treatment plantinKumasi.
These solutions have a high potential toincentivize local sanitation planning andmanagementinGhana.

Young Researcher Award ceremony
Twenty postgraduate students who arecurrently involved in IWMI’s researchprojects were invited for a specialanniversary event, and seven of thembriefly presented their work andcontribution to the Institute’s researchfor development in Ghana and WestAfrica. New projects
Building climate-smart farming systems through integrated water storage and crop-livestock interventions
This project, supported by the CGIARResearch Program on Climate Change,Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS),aims to improve the climate resilience of farmersinnorthernBurkinaFasoandMalithroughthefollowing:
• Improving water availability forcrops, livestock and humansthroughouttheyear.
• Stabilizing cash flows from cropsandlivestockovertime.
Crop-waterlivestocksystem(source:TimEllisandMarloesMul[IWMI]).
• Establishing areliable value chain for crops andlivestock.
Furthermore, theproject is testing the‘climate smartness’of various water storage and crop-livestock interventionsin relation to foodsecurity, and climatechange mitigationand adaptation. It willalso identify barriersand constraints that prevent farmersfrom actually taking up and using these potential solutions. The project isbeing implemented jointly by IWMI,
International Livestock Research Institute(ILRI), Institut de l’environnement et derecherchesagricoles(INERA),BurkinaFaso,andInstitutd’EconomieRurale(IER),Mali.
Giving ‘latecomers’ a head start: Reorienting irrigation investments in the White Volta Basin to improve ecosystem services and the livelihoods of women and youth
This project is a collaboration betweenIWMI and the Ghana IrrigationDevelopmentAuthority(GIDA),Universityfor Development Studies (UDS) and theDepartment of Women in AgricultureDevelopment (WIAD) of the Ministry of
FoodandAgriculture (MoFA).Theaimofthis project is to evaluate the impacts of selected irrigation systems in the WhiteVolta Basin, in northern Ghana, at threescales (small, medium and large). First,the study examines the contribution ofeach irrigation system to enhanced rurallivelihoods, and gender and generationalequity; and how ecosystem servicesunderpin this development and areaffected by it. Second, a comparativeanalysis of systems at the three scales is to be undertaken to assess and
explain relative differences in theircontributions to livelihoods, equity andhealthyecosystems.Finally,basedonthiscomparison, theprojectwill examine thepotentialforup-andout-scalingirrigationinvestments that provide women andyouthwitha‘headstart’,andthechangesinpolicyandskillsneededtoprovidethemwithpositiveincentivesforthesustainablemanagement of ecosystems and theirservices. This project is funded by theCGIAR Research ProgramonWater, LandandEcosystems(WLE).

Supporting investment decisions in water and land management across the rural-urban continuum in the Volta-Niger focal region (Invest in Water)
The IWMI West Africa Office hosted a two-dayinception workshop for the project entitled‘Supporting investment decisions in water and land management across the rural-urban continuum in the Volta-Niger focal region’onMarch12-13,2015,in Accra, Ghana. The objective of the project is toassesstheeconomicandenvironmental/ecosystemeffects of selected agricultural watermanagement(AWM)aswellasresourcerecoveryandreuse(RRR)solutions, and provide recommendations on whatAWM and RRR solutions to use and where. Theprojectalsoaimstoprovideindicationsofbusiness-focused feasibility, and identifying successfulstrategies for expanding the use and benefits ofthesesolutions.This isoneofsixresearchprojectsundertheVolta-NigerFocalRegionofWLE.ItisledbyIWMIinpartnershipwithWIAD,KwameNkrumah
University of Science and Technology (KNUST), West African ScienceServiceCenteronClimateChangeandAdaptedLandUse(WASCAL)andiDE BurkinaFaso.

Managing Bagré water infrastructure for equity and ecosystems
IWMI, in collaboration with Centre decoopération internationale en rechercheagronomique pour le développement(CIRAD), Institut de recherche pourle développement (IRD), LaboratoireCitoyennetés (LC) and Bagrépole, launchedanewprojectthataimstoprovidepractical

Flood-recession agriculture for food security in northern Ghana
This project is a collaboration betweenthe International Food Policy ResearchInstitute (IFPRI) and IWMI, with fundingfrom the United States Agency forInternational Development (USAID) –Feed the Future initiative. The mainobjective of the project is to explorethe opportunities for improving theproductivityofflood-recessionagriculture(FRA),anditscontributiontofoodsecurityand local livelihoods in northern Ghana.In 2015, the project team reviewed thecurrent stateof knowledgeaboutFRA in
Ghanaandidentifiedtheknowledgegaps;undertook mapping and hydrologicalcharacterization of flood-prone areas inthe Upper East and UpperWest regionsofGhana;andcarriedoutanassessmentof the socioeconomic challenges andopportunities for improving FRA. Theproject also established agronomic fieldtrials to evaluate different rice varietiesfor flood tolerance under floodplainecology.Theprojectisbeingimplementedin collaboration with CSIR-SavannaAgricultural Research Institute (SARI),Savannah Accelerated DevelopmentAuthority (SADA), MoFA, CSIR-WRI andWienco(Ghana)Limited.
