    Pennsylvania 10th District

    In the midst of his fourth term representing this mountainous district, Don Sherwood got caught up in scandal. Last year

    he settled a lawsuit wherein an alleged mistress accused him of physical abuse during their five-year affair. This has givenChris Carney an opening to pick up the seat. National interests and both parties are starting to pay attention. The CookPolitical Report ranks this race Lean Republican.

    The District

    Spanning 13 counties in northeastPennsylvania, the 10th is a generallyRepublican district. It includes much of thePoconos Mountains and the cities ofWilliamsport and Carbondale. The area used tobe a center of coal and steel production, but theindustrial economy has declined here. State

    Treasurer and 2006 Senate candidate BobCasey ran close races against Sherwood here in1998 and 2000, and Sherwood faced a verytough primary this year after his scandalbecame public: he pulled only 56% of theRepublican vote.

    A veteran and political science professor, Chris Carney has served at the Pentagon as an adviser on terrorism andintelligence issues. He served in Iraq after the first Gulf War and in Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 attacks. He is a strongadvocate of an exit strategy in Iraq and a smarter campaign against terrorism.     About Don Sherwood

    A reliable vote for Republican interests, Sherwood is considerably more conservative than the GOP incumbent hereplaced in 1998. He has only sponsored four bills during the past term, but he has voted in favor of the controversialMedicare Part D.     Fundraising and Polling

    Sherwood has raised nearly $1.1 million more than half from PACs but was forced to spend heavily on his primary.He has $479,000 left on hand. Carney raised $433,000 so far, 72% from individuals. He has $301,000 left. A Democraticpoll showed a tight race: Sherwood held a small 46-42 lead, within the margin of error. This a narrower lead thanSherwood showed in a similar April poll.
